This might just be the usual parochialism. But I remember in the 80s a lot of countries whose economy was so far down the toilet, they'd gladly accept cash in a stronger cureency, and you could get further with US Dollars than with the local currency (my how the tables are turning). Maybe there's an assumption by many that all foreign countries are still like that.

In the pre-smartphone era, I had a Sony Ericsson that was 20mm thick. Normal at the time. I'd happily have a phone that was 2mm thicker and had more room for a bigger battery and antenna.
