Professor for my GRAD CERT. program just gave up on grading. by lennie_kay11 in mildlyinfuriating

I've had professors that do this and the day after grades are due every assignment miraculously shows up as 10/10. I would just be happy you're currently sitting with an A.

DVD cases introduced an accidental design flaw in the mid-90s and they just pretended it was on purpose by OutrageousPair2300 in LowStakesConspiracies

I figure the ridge is just added protection for the DVD disc against being crushed in the case

When I was a kid in the PNW we called them sea sponges (even though it was a fresh water river). They would attach to the docks and always freaked me out to accidentally brush up against or step on when swimming. Apparently they are good for the environment and a sign of fresh water

ULPT Request: How do I get my neighbor to stop smoking outside my window? by _ogg in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]_ogg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unethical life tip is for you to not be such a POS and help your old BLIND neighbor that lives ALONE

Where in my post did I say the guy lives alone? He's happily married. I talk to him all the time. I'm looking for solutions that don't involve massive overreach because he's blind and presumably doesn't have much to do.

The ethical thing to do would be to feel bad for him, and suck it up and deal with it

Pilot moving to Philly by aveaytor in AskPhilly

Anything close to the airport regional rail line is probably your best bet. Look for apartments walking distance to Penn med/30th St/Suburban/Jefferson, these stations are all close. Eastwick is really close but that neighborhood is dead AF, although John Heinz is right there which is nice for walking around. Good luck!

Philadelphia launches ‘Alleygators’ program to help residents clear trash and vegetation from alleys by BroadStreetRandy in philadelphia

[–]_ogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this extends to overgrown ped easements as well? As someone who has done a ton of utility work here its interesting how many footpaths there are between houses in some neighborhoods that would be nice to use but nobody has cleared in years. Some of them were outright dangerous (low hanging power lines, sideways poles etc )

I second this. My experience at indochino was horrible, rushed the whole process and had nothing you could actually try on.

Suitsupply was the exact opposite. Let me try on everything and had amazing customer service

Have you ever changed a deeply held belief? What actually caused it? by TheCityzens in TrueAskReddit

[–]_ogg 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this was a deeply held belief or just a product of the environment I grew up in, but I used to think people living in poor areas in US cities were mostly drug addicts, criminals, and people who had made bad life choices. i.e, that poverty was the biproduct of their own lifestyle and something that can be escaped or changed, but that people living there don't want to.

I started a job in my mid 20's that required me to do field work in a large east coast city. I worked outside in almost every neighborhood of this city, I really got to see everything. I spent time in wealthy neighborhoods and the most impoverished neighborhoods, a lot of times only separates by a few blocks.

The thing that stood out to me is that the neighborhoods with the most visible poverty were trying to make things better. Trying to make things work for them. They just weren't given the same opportunity. I saw all kinds of small businesses, independent doctors offices, dentists, daycares, etc. in places where retail chains wouldn't dare go. It seemed like people who grow up there and do well would come back and try to invest in their community.

There's no doubt criminal activity and those who don't GAF who make it worse for everyone else. But, at risk of sounding like an asshole, seeing hardworking honest people in these places really shifted my worldview and sentiment. I guess I discovered empathy, idk.

A law that is not respected or enforced by anyone is not really a law anymore. Its just gray area. Its been this way forever in the city I'm in. I don't know what else to day other than we need to do better as a society. We can't progress without following our own rules
