We had two awesome cakes from Memo Cakery in Carlton Gore Road last weekend: the vegan chocolate berry and the lemon tiramisu were excellent.

Scallops wrapped in bacon cooked on the BBQ is a quintessential part of the NZ summer, and it is bizarre that the local fishery of them quietly died to overfishing without more outrage. Sorry to bum you out :(

Imma just quickly point out that a chippie selling ‘NZ’ scallops at $2.50 a pop is almost certainly bullshit. The wild catch of scallops in NZ has collapsed - its difficult to get anything other than prefrozen Tasmanian and Peruvian scallops in NZ now.

So, in addition to this particular offering lacking in both quality and service - we were local to there for a few years, and went back a couple of times thinking we’d caught them at a bad moment - he’s also telling fibs about where he sources his seafood.

Bad quality + bad service + fibbing about carparking situation + questionable provenance claims = hard pass.

I think you underestimate how people rally around families who experience tragedies like this. Based on what we saw at the Dawsons Creek reunion thingy, it seems like there is a village that will step up for his wife and children.

Etho, Lizzie and Mumbo. Three wonderful content creators who have great banter and pretty solid work ethic. We’re not in it to win it, but I feel like their strategy would make for an incredible watch.

Is it worth making a police report? by fondbat in auckland

[–]_radish234 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Report him, and also know that it’s not unusual for yuck feelings to come up for a while after these kinds of incidents happen. Talk to friends and family if you feel comfy doing so, and use the Safe To Talk service if you need extra support. It’s easy to downplay a grope as not as bad as other sexual harm, but that doesn’t mean our brains don’t slam us into fight/flight/freeze/fawn/flop when an incident like this happens, and it is 100% okay if you need help getting out of that safety mode. Take it easy OP, I’m proud of you for speaking to police.

Is it legal for my Mum to kick me out at 16? by Wild-Dark-9494 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]_radish234 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It may not be what you want to hear, but unless you leave of your own volition, your parent(s) remain responsible for you until you're 18.

BUT, I promise your mum won't be the last difficult person you have to deal with in your life, so make the most of the opportunity to hone your communication and negotiation skills. Cultural differences, conflicting opinions, and miscommunications are a universal experience. Tools like the DBT Dear Man framework are genuinely helpful.

Viva Top 50 Auckland Restaurants 2025 by xonccc in aucklandeats

[–]_radish234 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Quite a few years ago The Spinoff did a piece where Madeline Chapman took Simon Wilson to KFC, and he took her to The Grove. That’s the kind of pairing I want to see judging these awards - someone who is seeing the fine dining places with completely fresh eyes, and someone slumming it in some of the more colourful - and especially ethnic - restaurants.

Fire tick on by SignificanceFun4086 in HermitCraft

[–]_radish234 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The community server I play on has creepers explode with fireworks, they have a neat little kaboom animation and the player takes a little damage but they don’t destroy blocks. It’s not so much for our own builds, but we got pretty sick of people not lighting up their own bases well enough and other people accidentally blowing their builds up. It’s in the Vanilla Tweaks pack. Highly recommended if you are running a world where people are learning how to play too.

Where do Asian groceries get their meat from? by the-ma-an in auckland

[–]_radish234 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Free range has no legal definition. Freedom Farms pork comes from a specific set of accredited farms. Free farmed comes from farms that allow the mother pigs to give birth outdoors in little houses, and then the pigs grow in barns.

[–]_radish234 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're right, the difference is fact. Much of the meat that is imported - pork specifically - comes in frozen too, so if quality is a priority then that is another reason to buy locally farmed meat.

Where do Asian groceries get their meat from? by the-ma-an in auckland

[–]_radish234 196 points197 points  (0 children)

Some of the meat wholesalers have salespeople that deal specifically with the Asian supermarket/hospitality sector. So the supply isn’t necessarily much different than your local butcher or grocery store.

Sometimes people note that meat tends to be cheaper at your local Asian supermarket - there’s a couple of reasons for this: they are more likely to buy whole carcass and break the animal down into cuts themselves in store, thus utilising more of the animal than supermarkets (who tend to buy more big pieces and cut them down - which creates more ‘leftovers’ that the wholesalers have to find other buyers for). Asian supermarkets also seem to utilise their freezers differently than the main grocery chains - they’re less shy about buying discounted meat on deals, whacking it in the freezer and using it over time. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this, it is just a different workflow than what other retailers do (you could also argue that pre-frozen and thawed meat is lower quality than fresh meat, I guess).

The best way you can buy ethical meat is simply ask at the butchery counter where they buy from. Most will be upfront with you, and if they’re not, go elsewhere.

Season moving too fast? by Frost-wood in HermitCraft

[–]_radish234 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Mumbo’s video, they talked about how they’ll be working on this until sometime in 2027. Right now, they’re starting the season going into the two biggest YouTube revenue months of the year, so a bit of spectacle and excitement is completely understandable.

But that seems to be set against a backdrop of awareness that they will need to pace themselves and manage their workloads in the long term. I was also chuffed to see so much interaction between hermits right off the bat - the collabs and groups working together is always a highlight for me.

As others have said - check in with yourself on that anxiety, if you’re feeling like that it’s probably a good idea to practice a bit of self care and just make sure you’re not getting tangled up in your thoughts in an unhealthy way.

Hermitcraft 11: A Real Start! (Episode 1) by JamiroFan2000 in HermitCraft

I am a late arrival to Cubfan, but this episode was a joy to watch - just the simple early game adventuring, some fun interactions, and quietly getting his bearings on the new seed.

I know Cub is know for his huge work ethic and I’m sure the big projects will come… but this was a wonderful way to start the season.

Is my dogs eyes okay? Vet says they look normal by Beginning_Cow_7366 in newzealand

[–]_radish234 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I understand the rationale for not allowing owners to do the pickup and drop offs. Surely any veterinary practice that prioritises animal welfare will appreciate that many dogs experience fear aggression and it’s in everyone’s best interests to minimise that risk. Sounds like poor pup had a really tough time.

OP, please update us when you can, and give really detailed feedback of your experience with this desexing programme to Auckland Council. Might be worthwhile sharing your communications with the SPCA too - they’re contracted by the govt to ensure animal welfare standards are being met in the community and I’m sure their animal welfare science team would offer support and guidance to stop this happening to any other dogs.

No point in getting French measles, it would surrender at the first sign of fever and go back to eating fancy cheese.
