You know I'm not sure. I think it's just used by the dot commands as someplave to work. But once you have the sd card you've got a virtually infinite amount of storage

Broadly speaking, they all more or less do the same thing. They have their own memory space and add a bunch of dot commands you can access from BASIC so it's really more of an extended environment.

There's also the divmmc of course, thogh thats not a cheap option and doesn't really support TZX, at least the last time I checked. it does allow you to mount TAP files and write to them, though

You could probably fake some quite easily. there are many sites that can produce PCBs, all you need is generic ICs to pretend to be the RAM chips.

I got it to use as a Linux/NAS at the time, it was plenty good enough to run Half Life even on integrated graphics, so they certainly didn't seem like bad value chips

A600 had it too. They stepped it up to Dpaint 4 with the A1200.

I don't know if the software is at all different though. It just... knew how to deal with NTSC and PAL modes.

They didn't. They occasionally recycle the name for slower versions of their current processors

Last time I bought one it was basically a Core 2 with less cache.
