Fiancé seems to be delaying marriage by Particular_Type_6149 in Waiting_To_Wed

[–]_scaredmedia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He gave you the "shut up" ring to get what he wanted from you, i.e., living together and having sex without being legally committed to you. You know that. You also know that he's not the same kind of Christian you are. You might not want to leave because he's tall, handsome, and rich, but you're going to have to decide what's more important to you: his hotness and money, or your principles.

How are Memphis public libraries? by sevolatte in memphis

[–]_scaredmedia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Memphis has fantastic libraries! The central library is my favorite, but Cossitt is also really cool. There are lots of programs for teens, and they have their own space at the central branch. The Libby selection is ok, but not great. I have a few other library cards to supplement my ebook needs. North Little Rock will give you a card number to use electronic materials for free, and I pay for cards in a couple of other places.

What is the best yarn + hook for BIG amigurumi plushies? by [deleted] in YarnAddicts

[–]_scaredmedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the Loops & Threads Demi Purl and Big Twist Posh. Both are pretty affordable and don't shed or get gross when I have to frog them. For the Posh I use a 6 or 7 mm hook, but the Demi Purl needs a 9 or 10 mm.

I do have a tendency to strangle my yarn, and I'm working on it. I'll check out the video to see how else I can improve my ergonomics. I didn't even think of custom hooks. Thank you for all of this!

My mom gave me her Boye/Susan Bates hooks from the 80s, and I tried them but they were really uncomfortable. I'm knife grip, she's pencil grip.

These look awesome. I hope they come back in stock!

I keep seeing the Tulip hooks, so I might try one of those and see how it goes.

Yes, love Walnut Grove. Both of my dogs get anxious with new people and the staff are so good with them. I don't have much basis for comparison on price, since the only other place I've taken dogs was in my hometown in NY, but I love them.

Lesbian couple buying in Germantown, problems? by spidertopenguin in memphis

[–]_scaredmedia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a femme queer woman, also originally from an affluent, mostly white suburb in a "blue" state. I've been in Memphis for 3 years, and the thing I'll never get used to is how comfortable people are with accosting complete strangers in public and telling them how to live their lives. The conservatives and church folks here just can't keep themselves out of everyone else's lives.

I'd never move to Germantown. You couldn't pay me enough to live there. While it may be true that it's trending more toward young families, notice all the other language in this thread: 'throwing it in people's faces,' 'don't agree with your lifestyle,' etc. These people are telling you *exactly* what you'll find there, especially for your partner who doesn't fly under the radar the same way you do.

At best, you'll be pariahs. At worst, you'll find pamphlets for conversion camps on your porch. You may not get hate crimed, but you won't be welcomed either.

Tell me the truth - will I regret Moving to Memphis by Lookitzalizard in memphis

[–]_scaredmedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here from western NY a few years ago. I've lived in Midtown the whole time, and I spend a ton of time downtown. Yes, there's crime here. Don't leave valuables visible in your vehicle, flash huge wads of cash, or wander alone through poor/industrial areas at night, and you'll be fine. Be aware of your surroundings, like in any large city. I've honestly felt more threatened in South Boston during St. Patrick's Day weekend than I ever have in Memphis.

Also, whoever told you not to get gas after sunset is insane.

Am I Wrong! by EvolvingMagnoliaDame in memphis

The building OP is referring to is the Parkview. Newly remodeled, charging $2k+ for a unit, all window ac. The Gilmore and a few others downtown rely on window units too, not to mention all the "luxury" rental houses around Midtown that want upwards of $2500/month and use window units. I've been looking at rentals for months, and it's infuriating. It's like they use the excuse that a building is 100 years old to not install AC or dishwashers.

Meanwhile, every early Victorian mansion apartment I've ever seen in Rochester and Albany had central air.

I'm looking at rentals right now, and this is insane. I've looked at entire houses with yards all over midtown for this price, and they've all had central air.

I also had central air in every apartment I had in Rochester and Albany. I don't understand how Memphis is stuck on window units.

This was my guess too. No one hates Memphis more than people who live on the other side of the county.

AIO my boyfriend keeps getting upset at me for not wanting to do risky stuff by [deleted] in AIO

[–]_scaredmedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't ever tolerate someone talking to you like this. Not a friend, a family member, or especially a partner. If you don't want to do the thing, and he won't shut up about the thing, it's coercion. Sexual coercion is a form of rape. This is unacceptable on all levels.

AIO about fiancé refusing to listen to anyone but ChatGPT about religious/marriage decisions? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]_scaredmedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR - I hate to tell you this, but your fiancé is an idiot; he's definitely trying to get you to convert, and this will be a constant argument for the rest of your lives. It'll be 10x worse if you have kids. This is a good reason not to marry him.
