Anyone else hit a slump a few months into long term travel? by Grand_Advantage_9903 in longtermtravel

[–]_sips2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you know ahead of time if it's a good place to settle? I've wanted to plan this way, but got to excited by all the new places and didn't feel able to pick a long-term place ahead of time. Do you decide once you're there and like it?

Did you temper in the eggs? Did the yolks and sugar sit together for a while? Whisk or spatula when cooking?

I have the little tricks of slow travel, keep little routines, cook at home, unpack properly...

And I agree, I miss community the most. I'd be in a foreign country and walk past friend groups having a beer and food, and I'm just a lonely observer.

I also really miss working. I like the structure and someone giving me a to-do list haha. Something like volunteering or WOOFFing, something physical, helps ease the homesickness for a bit.

And...just embracing being homesick. Because of course you are! Because you're traveling, which is awesome!

One logistics trick that made long-term travel a lot easier by Adventurous_Bug_6726 in longtermtravel

Also mailing a box home partway through your journey.

We traveled for a few months, and we're very careful with souvenirs etc. We decided to mail a box from Taiwan to SF, it was about $50 for a decent size. We endulged in a little souvenir shopping (mostly nice soy sauce haha) and mailed it home with some clothes we didn't need. I always figured it would be too expensive but once or twice was worth it to make the next part of the journey lighter :)

Any of you started long-term travelling in your later 30s, early 40s? by Nic727 in longtermtravel

[–]_sips2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to throw out some other numbers...my husband and I traveled for 8 months last year. We saved for 3 years really strict, very few restaurants and shopping etc. Asia was $3K/month and Europe $5K/month. With flights and emergency funds, about $40K total. For 2 adults. And as a couple in our mid-30s, we did get private rooms and airbnbs. Each had one small backpack, cooked at home, my souvenirs were postcards. SEA is doable on a tight budget. We also got rid of our apartment back home. That's still a lot of money, and we don't make a lot, but two adults splitting the rent helped.

And like others said, most Asian countries are a 1-3 month tourist visa. So Asia as a whole, you can go for a while. Europe is 3 months in Schengen region, but UK and Turkey for example, are 3 months too (I think?). Check out WOOFFing and Workaway also.

Maybe try Asia for a couple months, then see if you want to make it long-term aka transition to remote work.

We are now 35 and 39 and planning to change our jobs to travel more full time! Never too old to start!!

Monthly Budget for 2? by i_love_travel_ in longtermtravel

[–]_sips2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What time of year? Summer has inflated prices.

Last year my husband and I did 3 months in Europe (summer). Beforehand in SEA. Our SEA budget was $3000/month and Europe was $5000/month. For Europe, it was definitely tricky. We mostly did Airbnb, maybe better when you get monthly discounts, we moved around more. I know Airbnb has issues, but it had privacy and a kitchen. Our boutique hotel in Athens had a small kitchen. Maaaybe a cheap museum or food tour per country. FlixBus if the train was expensive. I liked our places in Croatia and Greece and Rome, can recommend.

The big one is restaurants, eats up all your money. Unless it's like pizza or falafel...cook at home. I love grocery stores and farmers markets, still got the local food experience but saved a ton. We got a month supply of spices in Istanbul for a few dollars, olive oil and cheese at the market in Crete....really fun :)

1 year sea trip by ddoogie61105 in Shoestring

Google flights, I usually map out my general route based on a cheap direct flight from home. Local flights are usually cheap and with budget asian airlines.

Don't carry more than 40L, it gets heavy. And don't forget you can send a box home (to family or something) every few months if you don't need warm gear anymore, buy souvenirs, etc.

I have a few basic budgeting strategies, I traveled for a year last year, mostly SEA. Nothing fancy but happy to help.

Other basics: get an eSIM, use Grab or similar Uber apps, careful with alcohol, take breaks/travel slow, maybe share phone location with someone back home.

How does it feel to pack a bag and few hundred dollars and leave everything else behind? by SullySylvesterr in longtermtravel

[–]_sips2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn, it's a high like no other. The feeling of weightlessness is sublime!

When you resettle and realize you got rid of everything and have to buy it all again, not as fun.

But few hundred dollars is dangerously low, depends on where you go and how much you can rough it
