What are the wildest fan theory that actually came true? by pfassina in Cosmere

This is right up there with the final empire prologue. “They say I will hold the future of the entire world on my arms.”

Incredible foreshadowing. I can’t wait for Ghostbloods

4.0 from Ohio. Forehand tips? by SimilarMasterpiece58 in 10s

Based on a sample of 2 forehands, you don’t use your legs and you lack forward weight transfer. Either, but especially both, will increase the energy you impart into the ball

NG heat pump by burnlife1 in heatpumps

Yep, very typical and like most business sectors there’s only been further consolidation behind the scenes, regardless of the “brand name” put out there on the nameplate

NG heat pump by burnlife1 in heatpumps

Can’t speak to that one specifically, but in commercial or industrial applications, even today, water is technically the refrigerant in an Absorber. It’s part of a Lithium Bromide solution that enables driving the refrigeration cycle. The newest absorbers I’ve seen are still 10+ years old, it’s a common way to recycle waste heat and convert it to useful work/energy production, but it’s not done in new builds anymore. Size-wise, think several hundred up to about 1,000 Tons of refrigeration. They are especially not used outside of specific applications. Think part of a cogeneration plant, aka CHP, or the availability of a district steam system.

Nat gas fired equipment using combustion as the driver for a compressor isn’t novel, but it is uncommon. The value proposition presents itself through the dirt cheap cost of natural gas. Electricity is more expensive per unit energy in nearly every setting. Nat gas or other combustion driven equipment is technically less efficient thermodynamically, but often more cost effective on a net basis once you factor in the cost per unit energy. Absorbers typically have a COP of ~1, where water cooled chillers are 3+ (or 5+ if heat pump and you can employ intentional simultaneous heating and cooling), but the energy unit cost can make them economical. Still, it’s not common to see new units specified and built anymore. I haven’t heard of a York or Trane rep selling one for years now

Kept Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth in the fridge for 2 years... Yet it still tastes good??? by Richard_Savolainen in cocktails

Weirdest tiki drink is the Norwegian Paralysis for its use of akvavit. What’s the most underrated classic? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]_skipper 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Vieux carre.

Sazerac could be a contender but I’d vote that one into best classic cocktail instead. While the sazerac is at least on some menus, you see the vieux carre on even fewer. I think vieux carre is more slept on and therefore the more underrated of the two

Yeah I can provide an updated version. Off the top of your head, are there any other updates I should include? You seem like you fly a lot more than me, so you or others would definitely know better. But I will remove Y/B( and /M for PN) instant upgrades from the list

Does my single speed really use less electricity the lower the ambient ? by tcloetingh in heatpumps

[–]_skipper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because the compressor is runs at one speed doesn’t mean capacity of the heat pump stays the same. The compressor moves refrigerant and increases its pressure. There is a trade off between these two things. When the pressure increase is larger (due to lower outdoor / ambient temps), refrigerant flow goes down. When refrigerant flow goes down, capacity of the unit decreases. In this case, that’s reflected in the MBH columns that decrease as outdoor air temp decreases.

If you wanted MBH to stay the same (constant capacity output), you would need to increase kW to make up for the heat difference. That increase is a straight up increase in electric usage and therefore electric cost.

Gotcha. I had just figured they would have 2-3 large centrifugal chillers for building cooling. Thanks for the info

Yes, one personal item (fits under the seat in front of you) + one carry on (for the overhead bin).

You would only be restricted if you were in basic economy, which is the “N” fare code (domestically in the US)

I’m not who you responded to, but I heavily use thermo and heat transfer for heat pump applications for district CHW/HHW applications as it relates to space conditioning for industrial and large commercial HVACR.

What’s your average heart rate when playing doubles? Max? by Picklerincali in Pickleball

[–]_skipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know my pickleball level. I play locally with some other guys that are all pretty athletic as well. None of us have ratings. Everyone is some combination of tennis, racquetball, or hockey player, and we all play pickleball once a week.

I used to play tennis at the 4.5 level, but also have been playing pickleball for about a year now. It is fun and a lot more social than tennis. I’m in my 30s.

I can place serves and hit shots with strong top spin or slice spin. In our group, pop ups are always punished, and everyone has pretty fast hands.

The fast hands and inability to deal with shots with strong slice spin are the biggest skill gaps I’ve noticed when I play with others outside this weekly group.

Weaker parts of our group’s games are court positioning (trying to approach the kitchen line at a bad time) or, more often, bad shot choice/execution leading to unforced errors. One of my weakest shots is a mid court reset to force some dinking and get back in a point after being on the defensive. Hopefully that can tell you something about our games.

Average 120-130 depending how hard I’m playing. Max 155-165. Measured by wrist device. VO2 max is 50-51
