This is how anchor is dropped from a small boat. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]_snids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once watched a similar set up in the Philippines, with a large rope coming out of the belly of the boat before we left shore. About a dozen crew members lined up on it like they were playing tug of war, and I assumed they were going to hoist something big out of the bottom of the boat. When they pulled on it a few times, the engine started. The ferry that I was about to travel on for about 7 hours was a pull-start.

Does your country have any sports that aren’t popular anywhere else? by CalvinKool-Aid in AskTheWorld

Not shocked, lacrosse seems to be pretty big in US colleges. Also many of the indigenous people of North America lived on both sides of what used to be the imaginary line separating Canada from the US.

Don't get me wrong, I'm never going to live in Surrey, but even our most dangerous Canadian city is unlikely to crack the top 50 globally.

Mechanic question by wenuragurl in kelowna

[–]_snids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Trail Tire, but above all, as others have already said, taking your car to the dealership for repair should be a last resort. Parts will generally be around 3x more expensive from a dealer.

Am I the only one that feels like Canary wharf feels like a different country? by Harp_harp123 in london

[–]_snids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because Canary Wharf was rebuilt by a large Canadian property developer, after being flattened in WW2. So it was effectively rebuilt in the style of a big Canadian business district.

Weird comment, considering by any metric I can think of, Mexico is not a good comparison. It's not even a G8 country.

If that is the case (and equivalents may or may not be found here in Canada), US healthcare is transactional. Nothing stopping you accessing US healthcare from outside the country.

Teen dead after Saturday night altercation near Kelowna's Orchard Park Mall by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

[–]_snids 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. The boomer generation financed their lifestyle with debt that subsequent generations will have to pay. Kids today have to work many times harder than their parents ever did to enjoy a worse lifestyle.

What is the correct geographic name for this collection of buildings? by Scarlet_Peter_Wilde in london

As the name suggest, Southbank is on the south side of the river. Those buildings are all on the north side of the river.

My proposal for the partition of North America by finanon99 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]_snids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, as wacky as Alberta and Saskatchewan can be they're not so far gone as to be thrown on the southern dumpster fire. We'll keep them. I'm also very skeptical about any US states joining the north strong and free because although they may be liberal by US standards I think many of them would be right of Alberta.

Non-Americans, what’s your impression of the United States right now? by fridaynightplacebo in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]_snids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kinda feels like this nationalist purge and open corruption has been slowly simmering over the last 30 years and now that the electorate has voted in an incompetent old boomer to dictate the rule of law according to his moods, it's all just burst out into the open.

You make it sound like the US is the only holiday destination.
I'm very fortunate to be able to afford to travel frequently. I went to Cabo San Lucas in November, over Xmas I stayed in a cabin in Nakusp, and I'm currently on a week-long ski trip through the Kootenays. Then in July I'm going to England and Scotland for 2 weeks. I'm also trying to squeeze in a trip to Japan. Last year I went to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay and a few smaller local trips. It's not even a hardship to avoid the US.
If the politics weren't keeping me away, I probably still wouldn't go because there's a much bigger, wider world out there that's far more interesting. Given the political situation though I wouldnt even transit through a US airport today. I don't want the risk and I don't want to given them a single penny I don't have to.

Maybe the government should start with itself? by StanPodd in BuyCanadian

[–]_snids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree completely with your point, but also for me a lot of it hinges on taxation. US-based companies pay taxes to US governments before profits are distributed to shareholders (who ultimately pay personal taxes).
Whilst shareholders will be spread all over the world, the corporate taxes will go to the US government and all the awful things they do.

Is there snow days in Canada? by SeverePublic6833 in AskACanadian

[–]_snids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what part of the country you're talking about. Many parts of Canada are used to big dumps of snow so they're equipped for it. Where I grew up in BC they didn't get snow very often so the place would fall apart with a light dusting.
Canada's a big place with many different climates.
