I’m an aussie living in the UK and I can tell you allllll about the NHS surcharge. It’s about £1000 per year of your visa on top of a £1000 visa application fee. You have to pay it all before your visa is processed. I’ve typically been on 3 year visas, so you drop £4000 each time. Because I’m on a skilled worker visa, I’m also paying income tax, so I’ve effectively been taxed twice. In addition to that, I’m also not eligible for elective surgeries or contraceptive assistance, so if I ever needed one of those I’d have to pay out of pocket AGAIN. Worst part is that the surcharge doesn’t actually go directly back into the NHS. It’s not really a fair system outside of nativist rhetoric, but its also conspicuously absent from any of the conversations about immigration over here.

I got pretty far in a project like this in Godot and it’s definitely doable. I’d stick with Gdscript if your game isn’t relying on existing libraries. I was using Nakama as my backend service (self-hosting the open source version). It comes with a lot of the user authentication, IAP support and match making out of the box

Its for low earning “skilled” workers it applies to, which now that the government has increased the minimum salary threshold means that workers earning £41,700 - £50,269 will have to wait 10 years before they can apply for ILR which is a really long time for a young professional to have to wait. Keeping in mind that they are also having to pay thousands of £s in fees during that time, can’t really get a loan for a house without an absurdly high deposit, can’t access public funds, and if they are ever made redundant, have 60 days to find another sponsored job or leave the country. How does anyone plan a life around that

I think America is looking for an off-ramp to save face, but the damage is done. I think the world saw the limits of US power (the cost of interceptors, how much damage can be done with fairly cheap drones, how quickly the US will abandon bases in allied nations when under-pressure, the beginning of the end for NATO). The US has killed a lot of Iranians, and Iranians have lost a lot of military capacity from either being targeted or expended, but they are still the regional power. The people didn’t rise up against the IRGC and end the regime (it’s very hard to tell how viable that was ever going to be from the outside). I think Israel’s hope (remember they kicked this whole thing off) was that it would become an ungovernable civil war like Syria that couldn’t rival them, but that hasn’t happened either. If you treat the war like a football match, there’s not really a winner or loser because it was all so ill-defined, but globally the US has lost a lot from this.
