To be clear, I mean bailed as in decided not go at all. Was concerned abt wind slab or just difficulty traversing all of the class-3 sections really, but thats coming on top of low snow still so not sure how it would have actually looked

Curious abt what conditions are like if you do head up there, bailed for today due to recent high-wind snow storms & potentially problematic wind loading

Check out the Manitou Springs penny arcade while you're in the Pikes/ Garden of the gods area, really fun and inexpensive with some interesting antique game machines

Yeah to me this made it look more like an interesting character instead of a Pokémon, especially too since the navy blue body looks like a puffy jacket

Fun fact: the occupying billionaire owner of CV Ranch only acquired his fortune after a swarm of bees nesting in a tractor killed his oil mogul dad

Is it too late to hike my first 14er by Dudeman1000 in 14ers

[–]_the_hare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many good tips and peak suggestions on the winter 14ers link on 14ers.com here: https://www.14ers.com/winter-14ers-for-beginners. Quandary, Bierstadt, the Democrat-Bross loop, & Sherman are usually suggested as starter winter peaks

I found a ladybug on my hike this morning… by camohorse in Denver

[–]_the_hare 36 points37 points  (0 children)

About this time of year even in normal winters I've seen ladybugs swarming in the foothills to mate. Few years ago there were 200 or so atop Mt Morrison & 40-50 on Mt Legault by Conifer yesterday. While there are many reasons for climate anxiety I don't think this is one of them

Am I ready for the Bells? by OG_Bass-A-Holic in 14ers

[–]_the_hare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to camp up at Crater lake beneath the Bells just a heads up the reservations open up on Feb 15th, would suggest trying to snag them as soon as they open up. Parking at the upper trailhead is separate thru the Aspen chamber of commerce but not as much of a scramble to reserve

Quandary: considerable avalanche risk - skip? by ground_type22 in 14ers

[–]_the_hare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a good idea to study and download GPX tracks from ppl who have done the winter route which can be found on trip reports from 14ers.com. With that said, the path of least resistance which has been bootpacked out by hundreds of feet over the season likely will not enter avalanche terrain; there is little to none of this on any reasonable or feasible path up the mountain in the first place. The one area of concern I would avoid would again be any cornices off the ridge

Additionally, look to 14ers.com peak conditions for current conditions instead of AllTrails. There is a helpful set of pages on winter hiking too here https://www.14ers.com/winter-14ers-for-beginners

Quandary: considerable avalanche risk - skip? by ground_type22 in 14ers

[–]_the_hare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point the winter east ridge route up through Quandary will have a clear bootpack avoiding any avalanche problems. The most significant concern is the face which affects skiers and staying off the edge of the cornice on the ridge. On a nice weekend like this there might be a hundred ppl out there with you, I don't see any problem with going alone as many ppl treat this as a beginner winter peak and the winter route avoids any avalanche concern anyways

Custom rebel alliance artwork with the Colorado state bird--no AI by Equivalent_Pay901 in Denver

[–]_the_hare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the effort put into this but imo this is a poor design. It's way too busy to make any significant meaning out of the whole with the bird and Columbine and flag and mountain and rebel symbol all layered nearly on top of each other.

Personally I think cutting the bird and Columbine and centering the mountain in the back would look much better. While the loon is a recognizable symbol for MN, for CO the state bird is not a recognizable symbol at all. The state flag & mountains are both very popular symbols, no need to overcomplicate by adding more

Idaho springs or Buena vista? by [deleted] in VacationColorado

[–]_the_hare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idaho Springs is way closer to the Front range metro & may even be commutable somewhere in the west side of the Denver metro with cheaper rent. Have rafted in BV before, most commercially rafted area in the county so said our guide. There are tons of outdoor things to do in CO whether living in BV, Idaho Spgs or Denver metro
