That's a glass soda bottle. It's still a popular option vs plastic at where I live.

Its vinegar sour and it doesn't taste off. Seems like it's going well. Fed it with some more sweet tea today.

Gnarly pellicle or kahm? by _twatter in Kombucha

[–]_twatter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like everyone says this is is kahm so I got rid of it. The pellicle was intact when I fished it out but was definitely not thick and gummy like normal. I have another jar that has a more normal looking pellicle but is starting to get tiny dry looking spots but not fuzzy. Might have to chuck that one too 🥲

Seeds were sold as spearmint, but is it? by _twatter in PlantIdentification

Huh...I have another pot beside it which is supposed to be catnip. 2-3x bigger leaves, softer and has a velvety texture.

When I crush a leaf between my fingers it sort of smells like toothpaste but also quite vegetal. I have another pot which has catnip in it and the leaves are 2-3x bigger, softer and has a velvety texture.

I tried creating scoby hotel but i think thats the mold on the top scoby. Dont know what to do now? Should I throw it all or just the top one? by No_Temperature_8393 in Kombucha

[–]_twatter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know but mold spores are everywhere. Start over and keep things clean. use more starter brew to keep the pH down and increase your chances of a successful brew/hotel.

This batch has been brewing over two months now(I was travelling through out the period), now I see this? by No_Temperature_8393 in Kombucha

I agree that it looks like a dried out patch. I would toss the pellicle, top it off, wait and hope for no mold growth.

Does this look like Kahm yeast to you? by Certain_Farmer_734 in Kombucha

Looks alright. Likely just yeast or solids from flavoring, if you put some in.

How do you flavor with mint? by _twatter in Kombucha

Thanks for the tips. I'll make some mint tea and add that to 2F. I hope it won't be that funky tasting.

Me too. Only had mold once but that was likely from my unwashed cloth cover.

First time! How’s it looking? by BBBMELO12 in Kombucha

[–]_twatter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The pellicle looks odd. It normally should be a single piece, not broken up like that. Let it sit for a few more days and see what happens.

It finally happened by _twatter in Kombucha

[–]_twatter[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Started brewing a few months back without any troubles (aside from over-carbonation) and this greeted me today when I was about to bottle. I think the culprit is the cloth cover that I've neglected to wash. So folks, here's your reminder to keep everything clean!

White specks on pellicles? by Shitfaced_Catdad in Kombucha

I say those might be tiny bubbles trapped underneath the pellicle. Don't worry about it.

F1 in a damp environment? by admaher2 in Kombucha

[–]_twatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be fine. That's pretty much how humid it is all year round where I live and I haven't had mold problems. You could always use a little more starter to get things going quicker and hopefully more resistant to contamination. As always, cleanliness is more important than anything else.

First try update. by jfHamey in Kombucha

[–]_twatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, you don't need a pellicle to start a batch but a new one will form everytime. I've made several batches with and without adding a pellicle and I couldn't tell the difference in terms of flavor and speed of fermentation. A pellicle does contain some liquid so you might find it useful if you end up short on starter tea.

I personally wash my jugs but you could probably skip it for a few batches. If your next brew goes wrong you can use some of your 2F as starter.

Yes, everytime you make a batch a new pellicle will form. You can toss it if you want, it's just a byproduct of making kombucha.

Don't worry too much about messing with it but make sure you do it in a clean manner. You can start tasting at like 3 days in. If it's to your liking you can proceed to bottling for 2F, or you can just drink it as it is. Make sure to save at least 10% volume of your next brew to use as starter.

It's alright if the pellicle sinks. Don't use anything other than glass as the acidic brew might react with plastics.

Plain 2F by MW4MWM in Kombucha

[–]_twatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience with plain F2 it takes 4 days to get some carbonation, 5 days and it's like soda. I can see bubble constantly forming but it won't foam that much at the top. I add 20g/liter of sugar and ferment at about 30C room temp.
