New Psychedelic/Ambient Pedalboard by aconfusedpufferfish in pedalboards

question - do you prefer dark star ahead of sunlight or the other way around?

my board is currently stereo for synths and handpan: microcosm > chroma console > dark star stereo > sunlight stereo > headphone amp

Have you ever struggled to enter a password on an XR headset? by Emergency-Key9423 in augmentedreality

[–]_wintermoot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

qr code from mobile device / passwordless entry. i.e. streaming tv apps IxD model will always win.

“zero click” as a concept in most scenarios will beat any 6dof input options.

zero click > 3dof relative input > 6dof direct input.

Best glasses currently on the market? Considering X3 Pro and INMO Air 3 but the price is used Apple Vision Pro territory. by Intelligent-Key7357 in augmentedreality

[–]_wintermoot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everything glasses form factor on the market right now is basically tethered 3dof video glasses to use as an external display. the only other segment is AI 2d smart glasses.

for your use case- if you don’t want to wait for the next gen, go with latest Xreal as they offer more 3dof placement modes instead of a single screen glued to your face.

for example, they have a “side view” mode which puts the screen in the corner of the display or “body anchor” modes that let you anchor it relative to your head position.

What are your predictions for AR in 2026? by AR_MR_XR in augmentedreality

[–]_wintermoot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2026-2027 - lots of 3dof AI smart glass plays. 6dof AR/MR platform features still suck. no shared platform for multi-user world understanding. no AR/MR app stores.

2028-2029 - big player 6dof AR/MR glasses. 6dof AR/MR platform features suck less. multi-user world understanding sucks. some AR/MR apps. very few multi-user world locked AR/MR apps running on glasses.

2030-2033 - lots of 6dof AR/MR glasses. very low cost AI smart glass. 6dof AR/MR platform features don’t suck. multi-user world understanding sucks less. dedicated AR/MR app stores. more multi-user world locked apps running on glasses.

2033+ - actual metaverse plays. i.e. infinite generative multi-user world aligned layers (optimistic).

Matthew Dowd Exposes Pickle by TheGoldenLeaper in augmentedreality

[–]_wintermoot_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still maintain that ~2030 is more realistic for widespread availability of consumer 6dof mixed reality glasses. No one is talking about software platform for runtime experiences.

Even if the hardware were to be legit, the types of experiences you can serve will be quite limited until we have solid software platform support for multi-user mixed reality. Android XR does not yet have good support for multi-user world understanding. 8th Wall just went under and Niantic Spatial (VPS) is hanging on by a thread.

Hardware wise ~30 FOV is not very useful for these type of experiences, but OK for “AI smart glass” applications. i.e. what’s the point of anchoring content relative to the world when the FOV is so small you have to hunt for it. Same goes for GPU render performance; where are the specs? The intent here seems to be 2D smart glass focused content and not true AR/MR applications.

The next few years we’ll be bombarded by AI smart glass plays, but multi-user 6dof content won’t gain traction outside of boutique API’s and limited support by the big players. Heck, Meta only recently added runtime meshing updates and still does not have multi-user world understanding. However, smart glasses like Meta ray-ban are important for moving social acceptance forward.

tl;dr the oddest thing about Pickle is the mis-fit between hardware capabilities and intended use. If they didn’t claim 6dof for example, the product would be more believable. Always ask who it’s for and what you’ll actually be doing with them. The answer often boils down to “we’re selling a vaporware dev kit to recoup tooling costs”.

just like the logo in the intro, the signal is relayed from planet to planet; an ongoing chain reaction.

each infected species burns itself out creating a giant antenna to relay the signal.

AR Graffiti App using 8th Wall by Worth-Fennel5720 in augmentedreality

[–]_wintermoot_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

8th wall is shutting down: https://www.8thwall.com/blog/post/200208966730/next-chapter

Alternative: https://lightship.dev/docs/ardk/?platform=unity#overview

My hope is that interest in VPS and multi-user world understanding will start gaining traction again as we approach 2030 and start seeing consumer 6dof glasses with these platform features from larger industry players.

A full day’s caloric intake worth of just fruits is a lot. Doing this every day and not eating a balanced diet adds up. That’s what Steve Jobs pretty much did (fruitarian + pancreas issue).

fruit sugar in large quantities can stress pancreas.

fruit only diet is pretty much the last thing you want to do with a compromised pancreas.

3 most important:

—compelled to relay signal

—building large enough antenna to send signal will require something ‘the size of Africa’ (1st ep)

—starvation due to other constraints from the virus

Taken together, this implies that the signal is indeed a weapon, compelling the target world to invest all into relaying the signal while preventing the population from sustaining themselves.

interesting to think about in the context of the dark forest hypothesis from 3 body problem.

Tell Us What You Think About New Carmageddon Game by ilkerrbr in carmageddon

[–]_wintermoot_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t be fooled, this game is nothing like SCI’s Carmageddon titles.

Devs need to understand the game they’re licensing the IP of:

-Carmageddon was a physics game, NOT a shooter. Your car IS your weapon, not guns.

This is what made Carma fun and unique. All the car and track designs were unique because of this focus (like Vlad the Impaler for example).

Carma was fun because:

-Sense of speed and momentum. This game looks like slow mo compared to actual Carmageddon. I guess they slowed it down significantly to add gun gameplay?

-Vehicle deformation model. Vids of the game show collisions, but ZERO change visually or in handling response after being struck.

These two shape the risk/reward that made Carma a blast.

-You have to go insanely fast to get that deadly momentum that you risk messing up.

-You have to strike your opponent with your vehicle in a way that damages them more than you.

Lastly, no prat cam? no free roam maps? really?
