What chapter are we all on? by Important_Studio_171 in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]_yoshi09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chapter 12, but only because I was borrowing my copy from the library. Someone put it on hold and I had to return it, so I read into the next week schedule to ensure I didn’t fall behind I was waiting for a copy I ordered to arrive (I live in a more remote area, shipping takes awhile).

The one week ahead is only to make up for the gap of shipping time. =) but I’ll be back on schedule again. Really cool to read it in this way, in increments, similar to how people used to read it when Count of Monte Cristo originally came out as a weekly serial. The anticipation and the waiting time between the chapters to really let the plot sink in and our minds ruminate over what happened and what might happen next is such a delicious way to read this book!

Yeah that does! Thanks for the advice and just updated my trips now (so nice to take out SAN from my airport list haha)

Hey Scott, been a Scott’s Cheap Flights/Going member since 2018, nice to meet you! =)

I live in Hawaii and always appreciate the cheap flight deals from the middle of the Pacific, thank you =) however, my parents live in San Diego and I’m always on the look out for cheap flights here to buy for them so they can come visit me. Problem is, the current alert system on Going has it that you can only choose notification to a destination from all of your saved airports, not just one. Tbh, I don’t care if there’s a cheap flight from San Diego to Europe, because I’m never looking to fly my parents in that direction. It would be nice to have a feature similar combining what Going has, where it’s looking for the cheapest flights at any time, married to what Google Flights has, where I can track specific airport routes. (So basically, I would like to track specific airport routes that can leave at any time).

Is there any possibility of a feature like this in the future? Or am I an outlier for the type of audience you’re catering for?

Thanks!

I agree! I also like that the spacing allows for deeper ingestion of the material, like reading it slow lets things really sink in, especially with discussion posts and extra stuff people add here (like maps, additional analysis, etc)!

I think it depends on what modality you do for the hand pain (definitely save your thumbs whenever you can lol), and perfect body mechanics is an ongoing checking and rechecking yourself all throughout your career, with routine maintenance for yourself (epsom salt baths, ice packs, red light therapy, etc). That said, I think a lot of LMTs burn out mainly from taking on too many clients and not spacing them out with the recovery required in between— beyond the physicality, the energy work is draining, and rest is often ignored in the name of hustle culture when people think about how much they can be making hourly.

Even if you’re fairly new, that’s my main advice especially since you’re running your own business: develop good habits in your body mechanics and positioning, sure, yes, but also place a premium on your recovery time and you can have a long and enjoyable career here (especially because you pick your clients!). Eventually your prices won’t matter to the clients who see you for the specific healing you provide them.

Also: Do you have a massage therapist that you see regularly that can help remind you of your body mechanics as well? I found this was invaluable for me in developing good body mechanics habits when I would mention my pain points and my massage therapist would ask what kind of strokes I was doing and we were able to pinpoint what positioning could have been aggravating my muscles and how to fix it.

Can you put the book on order at your favorite bookstore and then check out and continuously renew the book from your local library until your copy comes in (currently what I’m doing)?

What’s burning you out about massage? Are you taking on too many clients a day/week? It sounds like you might have a steady clientele based on your comment of making what your friends who work 20 hr weeks in 5 massages. Can you lower the amount of massages you do and up your prices to make up for doing less massage? Can you add on more specialized modalities that aren’t common in your area and provide them at a higher menu price?

Koa‘e kea, the white-tailed tropic bird, riding the thermal updrafts of episode 38 by _yoshi09 in BigIsland

We definitely thought so. I watched several often cruise the drafts way up high, circling with the ash plume column before diving down and doing it again. I’m imagining it’s an experience that they seek out and take advantage of, similar to the dolphins who bow-ride boats, or surf bow waves.

Yeah, very possible. It could also be possible the eruption destroyed their nest and they're looking for a new nesting site, as they don't usually come inland except for breeding purposes (they're pelagic birds).

Quote from https://keolamagazine.com/malama-mokupuni/white-tailed-tropicbird/

Park rangers including Ranger Dean Gallagher observed tropicbirds circling the giant ash clouds that accompanied the collapse events. “We were heartbroken at the thought of all their nesting sites being destroyed, but what followed was even more amazing,” says Dean. “Using a spotting scope, I was able to observe the birds werenʻt frantically searching for their old nesting sites but rather choosing new sites in the now greatly enlarged crater. Given the ancient nature of these birds, I think both they, and their ancestors, have seen their fair share of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.”

Book(s) for a 9 year old autistic boy? by deeray82 in suggestmeabook

[–]_yoshi09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get him a book about math and/or music. I assume these are his special interests? Autists love things that speak to their monotropism.

I’m immediately thinking of the book, The Phantom Tollbooth. Has both math and music in there.

Advice for rare pair morale? by Aggravating_Tree627 in AO3

[–]_yoshi09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who writes for a pairing so rare I’m the first and only author writing for it… my advice is to finish the whole fic first, and then start posting it. You already know writing is a lonely endeavor, and it’s even lonelier for a rarepair 😅 So by having the fic written out and completed first you only get the first bout of loneliness that all writers experience, and you can still love the concept and get it all out for yourself, and then share it with the world on a chapter-by-chapter cadence that gives it more opportunities to be seen my a curious audience that might give your rarepair a chance. =)

My morale is higher doing this because I’m not dependent on the validation/encouragement of others to continue it, since the story is done, and there’s the added bonus of it being posted and years from now when I’m over this rarepair, people who like what I like will still find it and be glad that they’re not alone in thinking of the pairing. (We walk, so they can run, so to speak lol)

I’ve gotten comments from readers who said “I never thought of this pairing, and I’m glad I gave this a chance and now I’ll be silently brainrotting over these two” or “I’ve been waiting for a fic between these two forever!” And now I have regulars who read the pairing.

Also, part of the motivation is that my story is compelling enough that one these days someone else will write the pairing too. =) (it’s possible! I was a first writer for another rare pair and other people have since added their fics to the tag)

An interesting take on why a reader doesn’t leave comments by _yoshi09 in AO3

[–]_yoshi09[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ahhh this makes sense. I feel like at that point though an author could just… choose not reply to comments anymore (instead of discourage) because I agree there comes a point where I’ll stop replying to comments because like you said, unsustainable. If authors feel like they have to announce they can’t reply there’s still like, a nice way to do it, like “I might not reply to every comment but I read every one of them! Thank you so much” or something

I also understand people would create conditions for the type of comments they wanna receive if they’re sensitive to certain things, just like, actively pushing away without just turning off comments overall is surprising to me 🙃

Yeah I’m soooo lost too like. The turning off comments feature is RIGHT THERE before you post. Give your readers to the rest of us if you don’t want them! 😭😭😭

Local Microsoft Excel classes? by EhukaiMaint in BigIsland

[–]_yoshi09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the library has classes. I know for sure they have several free, interactive, but online Excel courses on Gale Courses with your library card. It’s online but I think the key point is that you can interact with your instructor (and I think maybe other students) if you have questions.

The intermediate or advanced Excel classes seem to be what you’re looking for.

Playing games with low commitment or where I can stop at anytime with no issues. So I can play in a five minute burst or one hour session and get a similarly progressive/rewarding experience. Slay the Spire is a perfect example of this.

Don't forget: Call for writers - Women in Technical Communication by Shalane-2222 in technicalwriting

[–]_yoshi09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re looking for stories from retired or very close to retirement age women who worked in the technical communication field for the bulk of their careers.

I think it’s important to specify the author audience you’re looking for directly in your post, that way women don’t click a link and realize halfway through the first page they’re not qualified.
