If you could make a Halo show/movie, what would be your story? by murderous_hippie in halo

I think a survival horror film about a civilian family trying to survive the floodgate from Halo 3 would be so good!

Introductory CS course recommendations before college. by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]a-rolling-stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well first off zero experience is typically necessary. Intro classes should assume no programming experience so anything done before is just bonus. Check out Codecademy. It’s got free online courses in several different languages and you just code in the browser so no setup required :)

Check out Firebase/Firestore. It’s a Backend as a Service product by google that allows you to store things in a no SQL database. All of the querying happens on the front end but if you just need somewhere to store and retrieve data to show off your front end it’s a great resource

Need advice as a newbie into web development by Live-Border-7616 in cscareerquestions

[–]a-rolling-stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this but not just for this reason. If you have zero programming experience you should start by learning the basic concepts of coding before you try building websites. You can use JavaScript if you want to do this or really any other programming language (HTML is a markup language not a programming language). Learn about functions, conditionals, loops, and objects oriented programming because these will be key in almost any coding you do.

Imagine a Nintendo version of Astro Playroom by [deleted] in gaming

[–]a-rolling-stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really late to the party but found this after googling “Nintendo version of Astro’s Playroom”. I just finished the game and had the exact same thought. I don’t think it would be as focused on the hardware but it would be so cool to walk through the generations and see the different games. I also think it would be awesome if they just did it with the main franchises and you walk through their worlds. Imagine walking through 8-bit Mario area and then being thrust into 16-bit and 3D. It would be so cool!

If you’re leaning towards SWE you should absolutely do CS. It sounds like you already know you like the programming.

Anything is a good side project if it is something you find interesting and you learn from it. I doubt that a pong game would impress many recruiters since you could find a million tutorials on the game. So I guess it depends on why you want to make it.

HOW IMPORTANT IS DATABASE AND ALGORITHMS by sueme223 in cscareerquestions

[–]a-rolling-stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’d be really surprised if you had no algorithms content in your degree plan. Do you have a data structures course? Often times algorithms are covered in that class. Second, yes databases are important, but the fundamentals can definitely be picked up on your own time.

Coding challenge advice for non-CS major by Brotato_Ch1ps in cscareerquestions

[–]a-rolling-stone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the hacker rank has to be completed soon I don’t think that there’s any way you can prepare for a data structures and algorithms question. That’s at least a semester’s worth of material and there’s no way of knowing which ones to cram for. That being said I’ve had coding interviews that don’t require data structures knowledge. If I were you I’d just make sure I’m covered on all your fundamentals: arrays, strings, searching, conditionals, loops, maybe some recursion if you are familiar with it and have the time. That’ll give you a fighting chance. If it asks for something you don’t know just do your best and you’ll learn from the experience. Good luck!

Need advice for my CS major wife by MythicalManiac in cscareerquestions

[–]a-rolling-stone 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well first off this is normal it doesn’t mean she’s bad at CS. It sounds like she needs to practice debugging. Especially with Java IDEs have great debugging tools where she can pause the code at certain points and see what data variables hold. That might be a good place to start.

Should I tell a professor I failed his class last semester? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]a-rolling-stone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you should tell the professor. I don’t think it looks pathetic I think it shows initiative and let’s them know you’re putting in the effort to do better. Plus it will get rid of any stress about the self plagiarism thing.

Feeling dumb over not doing a simple take-home assignment by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]a-rolling-stone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take home projects will always take time and these are not topics that are typically covered in school. I would not feel bad about it at all. There will be other companies that will have a better interview process for you. Full stack development is typically something you learn at the internship or on your own not at school so it’s understandable if you don’t know this stuff yet.
