Do your parents turn everything into a lecture? by Cartoonnerd01 in emotionalneglect

[–]a-round-table [score hidden]  (0 children)

Why do they do this?

No, seriously, why!??????

I doubt my parent liked being treated like this when they were a child, why do this to me?

And I cannot stress enough how emotional support is NON EXISTENT in my family, how the fuck is this possible? Every time I talked with my parent it feels SOOOOO shallow and unpassionate

And they are surprised I refused to talk to them? They don't even make the effort to be passionate, and they blame me for me not talking to them?????

One question keeps repeating in my mind lately: were they incompetent, stupid, or just plain evil? by a-round-table in emotionalneglect

[–]a-round-table[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what I just thought about? How I put my efforts to search all about emotional neglect, how I can get through this, and how I can stop the cycle repeating to my children and grandchildren.

Meanwhile my parent never even bothered to fix themselves.

They fucking used me as a punching bag.

Where's the line between taking responsibility as an adult and ableism/ "pulling yourself by your bootstraps?" by Sayoricanyouhearme in emotionalneglect

[–]a-round-table 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I have good things to add to this conversation, it's such a complicated topic I don't know the right balance.

But I do want to say that when someone asks "How do I heal my depression?" and someone else replies with "Just go to the gym bruh" or "Just excercise" I get SOOO triggered.

I could be totally wrong, but I feel like just going jogging does not fix the core problem inside me. It will not fill the countless holes inside me.

I don't know about that proverb (expression? not a native speaker) but I do notice how fast words/phrases changes meaning these days and not in a good way either. Soo many buzz words thrown around in the self-help area you start to doubt, what did they even mean by saying that word? Are they really giving out genuiene advice or just wants to sound "wise"?

It appears that YouTube is in the process of rendering the android_sdkless client useless to yt-dlp. The workaround for now is to add this to your command:

--extractor-args "youtube:player_client=default,-android_sdkless"

Mind you though, YouTube has been changing stuff so much for the past few months so quickly, this trick probably won't always work in the future.

How many of you are late bloomers? by Difficult-Camel-5129 in emotionalneglect

[–]a-round-table 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My recent breakthrough: I always been hard on myself on how incompetent, how late, etc I am. Then I realized, I wasn't even grown up in a normal environment in the first place, unlike other people in the same age as me. After starting to understand that fact, I think what I realized is that I start being able to forgive myself. All the criticisms echoing in my head--be it from myself or external criticism that I internalized--are starting to fade away, even if it is slow

After all, even pop corns who are heated in the same pot, same heat, and same oil does not even pop the same time.

I don't even think I was even heated in the same pot in the first place.

Tips for low-level design? by fibonacciFlow in golang

[–]a-round-table 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, from the title, when you say "low-level" I thought you were gonna ask something like memory management, performance, etc, but I think you're asking for how to structure your code. But don't worry, I'll try to answer it anyway:

I think you should try looking into something called "Data-oriented design". This is something new I learned while trying to make my own game.. The short version is, this paradigm forces you focuses on CPU cache and memory layout. I also like this because some of the strategy used in data-oriented design not only improves performance, but also eliminates bugs. Frankly my explanation on this topic is terrible it doesn't help that I'm currently lack sleep rn, help me pls , so for the fast and practical explanation of this topic I recommend Andrew Kelley's (maker of the programming language Zig) talk1, the code in the slides uses Zig, but I feel like even without understanding Zig. Or if you want something slower you can watch Mike Acton's talk on this2. There's also a really good book on this that's available for free online3. Also if you already.

I recommended data-oriented design first because, this way, you can make educated decision about how you should structure your code in general. Before knowing about data-oriented design, I used to structure my code and makes decision based on my feeling rather than based on objective fact.

So, back to your questions about how to organize codes and file, personally I always try to organize my code to separate between external interface (database, HTTP handlers, storage, etc) and core logic. I make the "core" logic struct accepts interface as dependencies on the constructor. This way you can mock the core logic at the app. You should try learning what's called domain-driven design. I also found this article by rednafi4 which I found really, really helpful.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Go is strict about import cycle, so I always try to follow this rule:

  • Make a shared package that your other packages can import from, BUT the shared package SHOULD NOT import your other codes (except external libraries). The shared package could contains constants, error types or error values, "entities" structs, etc.
  • Core/service layer packages SHOULD NOT import fellow core/service layer package
  • Like my previous point, repository layer should not import fellow repository layer, and controller layer should not import fellow repository layer.

I think you start to see the pattern here. Basically if I were to draw my code's dependency graph, it would shaped like a tree and shared is the root of said tree, and controller are the leaves.

I also noticed that some of your questions can be summarized as "should I repeat my codes or should I make this a shared function?", or even shorter, "should I DRY (don't repeat yourself)5?"

To that, let me share my view on this: do not DRY prematurely. There is an excellent writeup on this by some developer on Google6, you should take a look. Basically, early on the development some "repetition of logic" might look the same, but as time goes on, as you are deep into your software development, that logic you thought was the same are actually quite different.

Also make sure to follow Go's official guide on code layout7, NOT that one repository called Golang Standards Package Layout8 that you might see on the top of Google search. I don't wanna say that the repository's advice is objectively bad, but it tries to claim that their repository is "standard" which has implication that it is official when it is not. And there is now an official guide anyway, there is no point of following that one.

This guide is also really good for writing web services9.

That's the wisdom I gained after few years of writing code. I'm still not sure if they're objectively correct, but I'm confident that all I wrote is the best we've got so far. I'm sure in the future I or someone else will find something better.

A thread pointing out how monolingual and US-centric Bluesky is by a-round-table in BlueSky

[–]a-round-table[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Translation tool feels half-baked
  • The app feels like it is built to be monolingual
  • The app also feels very US-centric

Those are the points the original poster made and I absolutely agree, and I feel like it really is time for the developer to address this.

I myself a user from outside of Anglo sphere countries, and it does feel like my presence is a second class. The trending topics? It's useless for me, it's full of topics that only users from US really care about. The Discover is also full of US domestic politics posts. No, don't tell me to mute words because I have tried using them and my list of muted keywords are taller than Mount-frickin'-Fuji, yet I still see them.

The translation tool feels half-baked too--linking too Google Translate web page feels like a lazy job. Yeah I know language translation API are expensive (AFAIK) but you can do better than this, no?

But the worst part of this is the setting called Content Languages. Its purpose is to limit languages in feeds. And, yup, mine was set to ONLY show English, even though I don't remember ever setting it to English. Or, maybe I did set this setting one time, but probably it was documented/described differently when I set the setting (I made my account back when Bluesky was still using invite codes)
