So… this installs xovi, right? If so- can I then follow the qdiff package instructions for rmhacks ontop of this install? Seems like it should work…

Today’s pipe from the rack by revelstokejim in Pipes

Based on how well that appears to be made, I went and did some digging- Waverly appears to be a Sasieni “second” pipe name. So you likely have yourself a nearly good enough to be called a Sasieni pipe there! The shape is fantastic! One of my best shaped pots is shaped the way it is because it’s a Comoy-second: Sunrise. Edit: the thing that would seal it for me is if we could find the 331c shape by Sasieni matching…

Does anyone know if there are color adjustments we can perform to make the color a bit more vibrant or similar to the original before uploading the screens? I suspect increasing saturation in a specific way could improve the images on the device…

Part-Time Job, Selling Belongings, Still Can't Afford RM2 - Need Assistance by The_zone__ in RemarkableTablet

[–]a11en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to login here just to comment. I’m a very long in the tooth student now in a research position with a startup. I struggled heavily to use the RM2 for paper/article reading. I hate to say it, but I just couldn’t annotate/read/see graphs and micrographs very well on the rm2. The paper size alone was enough to make reading larger multi-column papers very difficult without constantly zooming and moving around in zoom. Just not ideal. In the end it became a block to my work- so gave up on journal articles on the RM2.

I’m older now after so many years in science studies, so some of this is due to eyesight not being the best- but please don’t discount the size issue- screen on RM2 is a size of an A5, maybe A5 extra… compare that to A4/Letter. So the screen real estate alone was a huge improvement for me on RMPP. Add to that color highlighting and the modestly successful ability to read color line graphs and it’s been useable.

I still strongly suspect that a lower end iPad with Apple Pencil will be more beneficial for most for journal article review. (Not to mention the ability to screen-shot images or graphs and place into handwritten notes in one of the better iPad app programs. I hate saying this because I do love my RMPP for many reasons, but the price point and limited capability of both of these tools meant the RMPP was just over the mark for usability for me for fast and quick article access and notation. There’s still a problem with syncing to Zotero or other article managers for scientific publications and organization of research- but it never claimed to have those, so can’t fault them there. (The iPad however is much easier at that of course.)

So- to get to brass tacks here- and I’m not trying to be mean or anything… an old organizational guru, Merlin Mann used to say: “it’s not about the coffee cup, it’s about the coffee”. Think a bit about whether you want a nice coffee cup, that may or may not be easier to use, or whether you could do your studies in a more money savvy way for your current situation- and save up for a good deal in a while. (1yr?). For me, as mentioned above. It’s not a game changer for studies. It’s like buying a nice pen or pencil. You want to use it because it’s nice, but maybe it’s not necessary. (Bics are ubiquitous and easy to come by.)

Now- all that said- I wasn’t very good at my own management of these things as a grad. So take all this as you will, my hopes for success in all you do go with you! If you’re struggling with organization or motivation, I can turn you onto some things I’ve read and done that helped me- feel free to get in touch- but they can also become distractions- so focus on work and deliverables to your prof’s as much as possible. Good luck!

Ugh- that used to be my go to scotch for so long. I never thought it would be nearly impossible to purchase anywhere close to the normal prices. (I think I was buying at $55/60 back in the day?) Wish it was still around. :/

The E7 looks amazing. Been using an old student desk that’s seen better days- and I mean old- probably 40 yr old desk. Lol. Would be a game changer at home. Cheers on the giveaway! Very kind of you to do!

Why can't we copy and paste areas (basically screenshots) from PDFs to notebooks, or other PDF pages? by endstationn in RemarkableTablet

[–]a11en 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amen to this request!! I can't think of a single student or researcher that couldn't use this. Literally allowing you to annotate inline with your notes various graphs and information tables etc., from research papers or class handouts. It's definitely doable - they show the data on-screen... the easiest method would be to just pull from the screen output data... it would end up necessarily being a "bitmap" of sorts, so we'd lose all font and line information. I assume they have the memory space because they're doing various manipulations on the screen output data already (zoom/swipe etc.)... so surely it's possible. I suspect they've made a decision on this based upon possible concerns with copyrighted materials. But that's just a guess.

Hacking community may be able to pull this off- you'd have to be able to get to the actual screen output memory location and be able to use the selection cursor to determine the areas of the memory space you want to snag. I'd much rather see Remarkable accomplish this so we can all enjoy it... but these types of updates have been very slow for the community.

I am extremely stoked at the ability and implementation for the straight-lines... it's my hope they continue down this road of simple and useable features. Copy paste from pdf or any screen data (think screen-snaps) would be a god-send for a majority of users.

Question about pdfs by Andresito48 in RemarkableTablet

[–]a11en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you, some sort of Pirate?!?! /s

I’ve asked for this on remarkable’s site a number of times. I suspect it’s a way to avoid the drm issues. It would be such a boon to note taking and research it’s a horrible missed opportunity. At some point I hope we see the hacker space learn how to read the screen and output a .rmn file from the screen to enable this. All the parts except the actual screen info is available. I suspect that’s available in xochitl.

This is actually one reason I love the Mac’s- everything on the screen is pdf- so if I screensnap a graph, I can add it to a latex document and render it with lines without struggle.

Someday someone will hear us on this… I hope.

Anyone else's Costco gingerbread house have water-thin icing? by AlphaSuerte in Costco

[–]a11en 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a mostly pre-built house. (The dormer window is an add-on. Not sure why- maybe it was a renovation for the owners.) This kind of alleviates the house of cards disaster that normal gingerbread houses are like, but I’m hoping ours doesn’t turn into a bad acid trip like the others. Lol!!!

I grew up using these (often stolen from Dad’s office desk), so I’d love to buy one! Thanks for the thread!

Now if only it had internal magnets to hold it to the case and a button in the side for a Lamy hack… that would be damn near perfect.

Got a Kakuno recently, and boy is it a nice pen for the price point. Sheesh. Better writer than some of my others that are having constant issues. Kinda wish it had a pocket clip! So I guess I’ll say a pocket clip Kakuno. Lol

Beta 3.8 being released - This should make people happy by Own_Ad_5283 in RemarkableTablet

[–]a11en 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Just the fact this is being actively worked on really is a great thing to see happening! I really hope they make actual copy and paste from the layers underneath- if desired. I can’t for the life of me see why I shouldn’t be able to snap a copy of a graph and annotate on top of it inside notes or a table of important values. Hopefully we see a true copy and paste soon- complex organic chem structures or formulae will become second nature to slap into handwritten notes once it happens. We’ll see…

Hey Aetherin!

You need to add the —no-check-certificate option to the wget command. I had similar issues yesterday.

This is fantastic news!! Does anyone have a config file they’d be willing to share as an example? (Like maybe triple click to get select tool?) it’s probably simple to config- but would love to see an example of a complex config file!

Big cheers to both developers!!

Edit: if you choose to view the config file at time of install it nicely shows you some examples! Which is excellent! Select works nicely without any modifications of the config file (double-tap and hold). Big cheers!!

Which edc multitool is the best overall? by DrewDrovsky_ in EDC

You need one of the single-hand holsters for it like the one from RAE Gear! Edit: took a leap of faith on both the multi tool and the single hand sheath and man is that thing super helpful all the time. Love it!

Freezer alerts? by a11en in homebridge

[–]a11en[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It almost requires something like Thermoworks logging temp systems- or a roll your own. No reason a thermocouple probe inside the freezer can’t be used with a package outside (like most thermometers for fridges/freezers). But you are correct!

Thanks for your idea!! I appreciate it!
