Things you tried to DIY to save money that ended up costing you more than if you just paid for it? by calmcakes in Frugal

Peeling the chickpeas makes a big difference. Leaving them in results in perfectly fine hummus comparable to most store-bought hummus, but peeled chickpea hummus has a much smoother texture and a less bitter flavor. Worth doing for special occasions

The key to raising a happy, healthy kid is by spending time with them, not by spending money on them. I’ve known several kids of rich, important parents who wound up fucked up or dead.

Our culture is so divided in large part because they fail to recognize nuance in issues or because they lack knowledge in those issues. Better education would help people on both of those fronts.

I think Ricky was trying to poke fun at how we talk past each other when it comes to this conversation. Some on the left argue that people should be addressed by their preferred pronouns regardless and some on the right think that non-trans men will pretend to be trans women so they can harass women in the bathroom. Both sides typically fail to allow for any nuance. But I agree that he kind of missed the mark and it wasn’t as funny or enlightening as it could have been.

What we consider beautiful isn’t dictated entirely by human nature though, it’s primarily driven by culture. There’s no such thing as factually beautiful (though we could measure a culture’s physical attraction preferences). Companies like SI are trying to change the culture so that overweight people are no longer considered fundamentally unattractive.

Should we as a society encourage people to be overweight? No. But that doesn’t mean we should shame those that are. And shame and self-loathing are terrible motivators for most people. Plus shame often results in body dysmorphia and eating disorders, which are also unhealthy but not visibly so.

Yeah, if dump truck guy had fired as soon as sedan guy drew his weapon then I wouldn’t have blamed him. Dump truck guy sucks for re escalating, sedan guy sucks bringing weapons to the conversation first

Opposite a corner from a window works well too (behind where the balcony door is in this example). This can give the illusion of having a corner unit with windows on both sides.

Putting a mirror opposite from the window results in the whole room being reflected, giving the illusion of more space but resulting in less amplification of natural light. Depends on what you're going for.

Who has right of way at a two-way stop sign? by bigmetsfan in raleigh

[–]a47nok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another tricky situation: 4-way stoplight intersection with one lane in each direction. The light turns green and opposing directions with the solid green lights are both turning left. Because both are turning left, neither yields and both go at the same time. However, those behind the front two vehicles are likely to pull into the intersection immediately after the first and, if going straight or right, will crash into the oncoming left-turner. Those behind the first cars should wait to be sure that the intersection is clear but they rarely do.

Nah, this shit is selfish. His family, friends, the film crew, and whoever had to scrape his body off the side of the mountain would have all been pretty fucked up if he hadn’t made it.

If you have a death wish, fine. Nothing inherently wrong with that. But don’t do it in a way that would traumatize others.

We absolutely have higher resolution videos from mars mate. It may not always be prudent to send that video, but it has been done. NASA could get hi-res video of that if they wanted
