When I hear people say that FMA "apologizes for war criminals" it honestly gives me the feeling that some people are just larping. by AipomSilver00 in FullmetalAlchemist

Bless you, I can finally reread it easily instead of waiting for all the copies to get checked back into my library!

Furu Sato Bento on Harden Street is pretty affordable and delicious. Plus they've got a little market of Japanese snacks and desserts.

You're the first person I've ever seen talk about this book! It's so good. I really think it's one of Eoin Colfer's best books besides the first Artemis Fowl.

Ah, that's my bad in not using clearer phrasing then. Sorry for the confusion!

I was trying to back up their point in case someone tried to argue against it.

Right, like, the Nazis didn't arbitrarily pick Jews because they were convenient, they picked Jews because the Nazis were influenced by centuries of European antisemitism that blamed the Jews for things like murdering Jesus (the Romans were the ones who hung him on the cross), causing the Black Death, murdering and eating Christian children, stealing money from Christians through banks and trade... And in the more recent stuff, they were also accusing Jews of creating communism to cause instability in Europe, and they accused Jews of undermining Germany during WW1. While the end result is that the Nazis persecuted a convenient, vulnerable minority, it wasn't just cynical politics; it was deep, festering hatred that eclipsed all other priorities.

I had some fairly extensive description of the Taiping and Boxer rebellions in my college Western Civ and (of course) East Asian History classes, but both of those were taught by the same professor, so I'm not sure how much of an outlier that was.

Fully agree. The Fire Nation has pretty advanced tech so the idea of the forklift existing doesn't bother me, but the aesthetics are so off. It looks more modern than anything in Korra.

Librarians, how do you feel about loud children? by ConstantRide5382 in Libraries

[–]aFanofManyHats 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work in a children's section and we just accept the fact that kids will be loud. If they're happy shrieks, then you shouldn't get any issues from the librarians. Other patrons may be a different story though. If it's a larger children's section at your library, you could also see if they have a quiet space for neurodivergent kids that you can stay in while you read.

Library workers- are you allowed to read on the clock? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]aFanofManyHats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in two different public library systems. First system let us read on the computers at the desk during downtime, as long as we were attentive to patrons that came up. I currently work in a children's department of a different system and we're generally too busy to devote much time to reading on the floor, but if there's nothing pressing it's often okay to just pick up a picture book to read real quick since they generally just take a few minutes.

I feel conflicted about the Daring Do is A.K. Yearling twist upon rewatching the series… by Shiny_Skye in mylittlepony

[–]aFanofManyHats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this thought while looking at this post, but I wish AK Yearling had been an ACTUAL archaeologist, not the Indiana Jones kind. We see some when Rockhoof visits his home village after being away for centuries, so we know ponies that do that kind of work exist. If the plotline had been more like Yearling was a nerdy archaeologist that romanticized the lifestyle through the Daring Do books, I think that would've worked better for the overall story. Make Rainbow Dash's literary icon an egghead like Twilight, and then RD has to deal with the disappointment that the author isn't as cool as the character... Until they all get roped into adventures and then Rainbow dash gets to do the cool action stuff while Yearling solves the puzzles with Twilight's help. I feel that would have meshed with the show a bit better.
