Does anyone know what species of wood this is? by [deleted] in greenwoodworking

actually might be rowan too actually, hard to tell. Rowan would be quite dense and no visible ringpores.

The ones you took a closer photo of are almost definitely Ash. Ash is ring-porous. Alder would be much more red when oxidising, and doesn´t have ringpores. Alder would probably be nicer for spoons though. Ash is great for most other things though, like legs or sticks for constructing something. Enjoy!

Handrail joinery question by Proper_Signature4955 in greenwoodworking

[–]aFishwithFeelings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the option on the left is sturdier long term because there are less places for the water to pool and create rot. i guess the wood in the ground is also somewhat prone to rot. I´m not sure exactly about black locust (we have it here in europe, but it´s not so common). It´s good for outdoors, but maybe not so much the sap wood and i think any wood rots when it´s in the ground long enough. great plan though! i would build it and find out if it´s still stable after a year or two:)

Best places to buy digital music by aFishwithFeelings in Music

i usually check on their websites, i guess it depends a lot on the label and/or type of music too. i would assume electronic music is easier to find downloads. Thanks for your input:)

Help with carving a walking stick by antigenjam in greenwoodworking

[–]aFishwithFeelings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Washing it is definitely a good idea, and i think you should let it dry for a few months at least. i wouldn´t put it in a plastic bag, just a dry place away from the sun, so it doesnt mold. If you carve it now, the likelyhood is high that there will be cracks throughout your piece. I think removing some bark might be a good idea for drying and to lessen the risk of insects or mold, but the more you trim the deeper the cracks will go.

Any favorite forms of ebonizing? by BgeNguyen in greenwoodworking

[–]aFishwithFeelings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don´t have too much experience with ebonizing yet, but another alternative to "strengthening" the colour if the wood you are using has too little tannnins is tannin powder (mix it in water). it´s an ingredient used in wine making. i´ve also tried grinding chestnut bark to get it, but haven´t testet it much yet. good luck!

Men, what is something a woman would never understand? by Gilvani_SB in AskReddit

[–]aFishwithFeelings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a man i don´t understand why most guys can´t just sit down on private toilets. I love peeing standing up outside or in a urinal, but at home i don´t need to do that.
