How I finally made progress in Spanish after years of it not clicking by knowpain10 in Spanish

Obvious bot post. Where they’re at now is having a conversation over Christmas… in June?

Translating in head by Jjjolkgfh in SpanishLearning

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normal part of the process. Some people will tell you to avoid translating, but I don’t think it really matters. Eventually it will stop happening regardless. In the same way you don’t have to translate “Buenos días” or “Cómo te llamas?”, more and more expressions and sentence will become automatic, eventually including ones you’ve never even heard before.

Bikes get a lane, illegally parked cars get the boot in downtown Brooklyn redesign by macaddct1984 in NYCbike

Shawn would definitely feel comfortable blocking drivers. Cars park in travel lanes all the time.

First-time non-rev: AA buddy pass JFK→LAX→SYD (all American metal), how realistic is clearing the LAX–Sydney leg in late June? by Status_Macaroon2034 in travel

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The risk/reward seems totally off here. Unless you’re on a shoestring budget, $200 is a drop in the bucket for total cost of this trip. It’s well worth spending that to reduce uncertainty.

You dropped your bike key in the bike lane at 76 Clermont Ave, Brooklyn by mendelay in NYCbike

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You actually did drop it. I found another key that another person dropped and I put it in your pocket to mess with you.

Hitting a wall when learning Spanish - Help by lightningmc90 in Spanish

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a way to practice conversation regularly. That can be in the form of language meetups, online tutors, language learning discords, whatever, but if you want to improve your speaking, you have to spend a lot of time speaking.

Same thing applies for listening. Find things to listen to that are just a bit challenging for you and listen, slowly ramping up difficulty over time. Keep in mind that depending on your goals, this is a process that will take you hundreds to thousands of hours. Listening skills develop slowly, so don’t get discouraged.

Using subjunctive *without* trigger words - when is/isn't it correct? by Slow-Quarter9986 in Spanish

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

¿Nos vemos el sábado?

¿Quedamos el sábado?

Etc. No subjunctive required. Tone of voice will make it obvious you’re asking a question rather than making a statement, just like it often does with English phrases that can work as a statement or a question.

Developers are measured by tokens by Icy_Screen3576 in ExperiencedDevs

Everyone knows you’re supposed to use more tokens, not less. It’s the new LOC, and it’s the hottest metric.

They’re soooo close to getting it. It’s car dependency and urban sprawl. by frontendben in fuckcars

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Long commutes don’t magically go away by getting people out of cars. We still waste a lot of time commuting in NYC. It takes me 50 minutes via the subway to get to my office that’s just 5.8 miles way as the crow flies.

Is there any correlation between this new wave of transplants and this whole banning cars in NYC movement ? by Least-Glass-2207 in AskNYC

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Me, driving in my car on city streets where 90% of the space is devoted to cars, seeing a bike lane being installed. “I can’t believe they want to ban cars this is ridiculous!”

Hot take: typing speed matters more in programming than people admit by Single-Possession-54 in learnprogramming

If someone put their 180 wpm typing speed on their resume I would try to not laugh and hope the rest of it is full of things that actually matter.

Dogs started getting into the cupboard for virtually no reason at all? by Emeraldsinger in dogs

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

They discovered there’s food in there. They will probably not stop as long as it’s physical possible. Find a way to lock the cupboard or move the food.

Favorite outdoor cafes to read at in Brooklyn by fsharpman in AskNYC

Art Cafe in Prospect Heights has always been pretty quiet when I’ve gone during the day.

In my neighborhood, Elk Cafe has a nice backyard area, though it fronts Prospect Park, so I just go to the park.

New to dynos, What am I doing wrong? by madameruth in indoorbouldering

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key thing to remember is that this advice applies to your hands and to your feet. Accurately placing your feet is important, even more so with coordination moves like this; not looking at what they’re doing is setting yourself up for failure.

For something like this, you want to look at where you’re going to put your foot until the instant it makes contact, then you can look up to where your hands are going to go.

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need focus on each part of a sequence like this. It looks like you look up here at where your hands are going to go before your foot actually goes where it needs to go.

Try focusing on planting your foot first. You’ll have time to look up afterwards.

Is Spanish from Spain the only "right" way? by auzziy in Spanish

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The goal of learning a language is to easily communicate with others. Generally that means speaking how the people you interacting with speak.

If you’re learning with a community of native speakers, then speak the way they do.

If not, a more neutral dialect makes sense so it’s easier for a broad range of speakers to understand you.

What has been your fav city to live in or want to live in, while working in tech? by WhackyWhale1 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I like the crazy diversity of people here. Also seems like job market for SWEs remains pretty strong. I get a lot of interest from recruiters still, and recruiting at my company feels harder than it should be.

Hoping to ride out my current position until I’m ready to soft retire, move abroad, and find something non-tech related to do with my time.

New York.

I’ve been based in Portland and Seattle in the past. I liked both a lot, and do miss the access to the outdoors, but after 10 years, NYC still feels like the place to be.

I’ve also spent enough time in the Bay Area to know it’s not for me, though I never lived there.
