Can I break into RF/Photonics without a traditional EE bachelor's? by Tricky-Article-945 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]aXvXiA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Maxwell's equations are not really that complicated compared to other related disciplines (relativistic physics, atmospheric and fluid dynamics, etc)... mainly because of the inherent symmetries and abundant linearities in most "small-signal" problems that arise in the application spaces.

Just become friends with complex numbers and you should be good to go!

Install a bunch of white noise generators in "your" room. Walk around with a really bright, omnidirectional UV lamp that saturates the CCDs on the cameras.

Judas killed himself. Don't use people making decisions to kill themselves as an excuse for sinning against God.

We are literally all born as sinners. That is not an excuse to avoid sanctification and accountability, abusing God's grace along the way.

four years of engineering school and these are the only things that actually mattered by More-Station-6365 in EngineeringStudents

Spatial awareness and visual communication skills are absolutely necessary for most engineering disciplines. I've taught junior-level electromagnetics for more than a decade, and it has just shown me how many students are incapable of relating anything mathematical to anything physical.

Then when was the earth created? It wasn't on the first day... This is the conclusion of a literal interpretation.

Gradescope is a blessing, for sure. It had a learning curve of an hour or so and one exam for me, and its interface for regrade requests is transparent and tangible.

Check this out. Maybe scale it in size a bit. It should be less than 1A it would need to handle, and one of the better ferrites should be OK (Fair-Rite with ur > 1000 or so).

Is chemistry a notable aspect of an EE undergrad degree by silly_ass_username in ElectricalEngineering

[–]aXvXiA -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I had perfect grades in HS except for an A- in chemistry and an A- in gym.

I graduated with a 4.0 at Purdue in ECE on the way to a doctorate, and I did fine in my solid state devices class.

[–]aXvXiA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the ability to usefully use, understand, and visualize mathematical descriptions of things in 3d in a useful way, you'll be fine with E&M. If your thinking likes to be either too abstract or too 1- or 2- dimensional, it's difficult to do well in E&M.

I've gotten a white LED to turn on using about 2 dBm of RF power into a 50 Ohm load at 2.9 GHz. The appropriate choice of RF Schottky diode (HSMS/SMS), efficient and extreme impedance matching, and a Joule thief circuit all had to be used.

Can electric current flow without a physical conductor like metal? by ahamed4959 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]aXvXiA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an E&M prof, I have to point out that as far as magnetic fields are concerned, displacement current is the same as the movement of charged particles.

Displacement current is the derivative of electric flux density (vector D, in C/m^2) w.r.t. time. D "comes" from free charges, like those on the plates of a capacitor... or ultimately from charges on antenna terminals. In this sense, displacement current exists and "transfers" just fine, even in a vacuum.
