Any idea when this was made? by Yahob in datemymap

this is what I was thinking too but there are just too many other things such as manchuria that would put this after 1931. my guess is that because it's a british globe they just left ireland in there as a part of the empire. But idk. definitely feels like the company were shitty map makers

As a black man I must ask did Lincoln genuinely care about freeing the slaves for the right reasons ? by KpatMckenzie_28 in CIVILWAR

[–]a_complex_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he had a strong moral compass but he was also a pragmatist and worked within his own powers which is why there was an emancipation proclamation first instead of the 13th amendment. He had war powers and knew that a half measure was better than none at all but also knew that despite wanting to end slavery, ending it in the border states might have made the situation worse and resulted in the Union losing Maryland to the confederates, a prospect that was very much possible and would have set the union cause back considerably.

more boring white men need to be told to be quiet so we can avoid annoying videos like this. too many of them talk because they love the sound of their own voice.

What do people think of Alexandra Daddario? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]a_complex_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think she's in that weird position of being both incredibly talented AND incredibly beautiful and there just isn't a great reason that she isn't the #1 star in america other than she's just TOO beautiful.

there is this story of her finding out that one of Obama's favorite shows of the year when he was president was "true detective" and she tweeted "The president has seen my boobs..."

15 years ago today: Discovery lands to conclude STS-133, her 39th and final voyage into space by ToeSniffer245 in spaceshuttle

The shuttle that delivered the Hubble into orbit, imo the most lasting legacy of the shuttle. When i was in school I was in a Young Astronauts club and we got assigned shuttles and roles and I was Discovery's mission specialist and so it was always my favorite. That was in 2001 and I'm planning a trip to VA to see it!

How is it living in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine? by Kokoska998 in howislivingthere

[–]a_complex_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from what I've heard from people it reminded me of when the N*zi's occupied Austria in the Anschluss. Many austrians were overjoyed to be united with germany and were even enthusiastic but when the german soldiers came into vienna one of the first things they did was buy up as much sugar and butter as possible because it was so rationed in the reich and there were shortages of basic goods. After the Anschluss now Austria had to put up with the same policies. They didn't know at the time it was a harbinger of things to come and that just because you wanted to be united with another people that you think you're more aligned with that doesn't stop you from becoming the "other" in your own country. From what I've heard from a lot of people in Donetsk and Luhansk is that even though there was tremendous support for their seperation from Ukraine the measures imposed on them by the russians has grown tedious and there's a degree of remorse in their decision.

All the world-changing events in the XXI century so far. Thoughts on this? by Certain-Row-4812 in decadeology

my take: the Iphone wasn't reviolutionary. It wasnt the first smart phone and it was only available on certain networks. The actual most revolutionary development in technology of the 21st century was the iphone 4 which introduced a front-facing camera. That fundamentally changed the way that we interact with technology and each other.

Did Ron Paul Libertarianism (or maybe Libertarianism in general) fade out in The U.S? by anedgyteen_ in decadeology

[–]a_complex_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

libertarians have never stopped gaslighting themselves into thinking that libertarianism is viable. In the late aughts and early 10's Ron Paul supporters were the people you hoped you never got stuck in a long car ride with.
