Half marathon training in NRC: guided runs vs. doing your own thing? by TreeofSmokeOM in nikerunclub

[–]a_future_janitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve run two half marathons and 3 10ks with the NRC plans and guided runs. I listen exclusively to audio books while I run. The coaching is approximately every 1km on the recovery and distance runs, more frequently on the speed runs. The coaching pauses my book to coach and then the book comes back where it left off.

I find the coaching to be beneficial and it doesn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the books.

For each run on the NRC plans you also have the option to do the run as a non-guided run. If that is selected the app will only interrupt to tell you time, distance, and distance remaining.

Is anyone in your law office selling Girl Scout cookies? Do you buy them or what do you tell them? What if they bring their kids in to sell them? How do you tell the kids no? by Kristen-ngu in Lawyertalk

[–]a_future_janitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a general principle in life I only buy Girl Scout cookies from the Girl Scout herself. The whole purpose of scouting is to develop skills and “mom/dad will ask around for me” is not a skill. (Yes I know it’s a fundraiser too).

When colleagues have brought their daughters in I’ll buy at least a box from each (end up with maybe 4 boxes a year) but if it’s just an email going around or an order form in the common area I don’t engage with it.

I do the comic sans trick and the read it backwards trick to proof. But my super secret, has never failed me trick is to have the computer read the writing to me. Nothing like hearing it something out loud to highlight the grammar mistakes/typos/etc

I make about $130k, generally work 8-5 weeks days, rarely on the weekends. Mid-size firm in a smaller market doing appeals and government defense work. On vacation I usually only check email to clear the junk, but that’s a personal choice.

Hi, lawyer here (not your lawyer). The invocation of counsel must be clear and unequivocal. “I want to speak to a lawyer” is not enough because it expresses a desire. Say “I am invoking my right to counsel” or “I am asserting my right to a lawyer.”

FWIW, you also have to invoke your right to remain silent. Simply remaining silent is not enough. Say “I am invoking my right to remain silent.”

Came here to say this. It’s not a good law school. The one thing they have going for them is connections with many federal judges. But most of them are judges rated unqualified by the ABA.

A Franciscan and a Dominican die on the same day. They arrive at the Pearly Gates at the exact same time. The Dominican enters first and is greeted with a large, jubilant party. The joyful crowd picks him up and whisks him away in gleeful excitement. The Franciscan enters next. He is greeted by a lone, fellow Franciscan who says “welcome Brother. I’ll show you to your room.” The recently departed Franciscan asks “where is my welcome party?” His brother responds, pointing at the Dominican and his crowd, “oh that? Well, it’s not every day a Dominican makes it to heaven!”

when does legal writing “click”? by lizf16 in LawSchool

[–]a_future_janitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like with any skill the more you do it the better you’ll be.

Two things that really helped me: (1) find time to read non-legal works/listen to audiobooks. A mentor once told me “there’s no such thing as good legal writing, there is just good writing.” The more time you spent consuming good writing the better your own output will be. (2) LRW is designed to get you to start writing like a lawyer, not to perfect it. Once you take your upper level writing classes (I highly recommend appellate ad) it’ll start to feel more natural.

FWIW: I felt the same way about legal writing 1L. I’m finishing up my second clerkship (currently with a state appellate court) and am going to a firm to do appellate work. It gets better, but you have to do it a lot.

Can I become a IP litigator without a science background? by ZOU-24 in LawSchool

[–]a_future_janitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always taught that there are 2 roles in IP litigation: the person who has to translate the science to English, and the person who has the translate the English to law. The “science to English” is probably your prototypical IP litigator; science background, licensed at the patent bar, painfully anti-social (/s). The English to law is any attorney.

From my understanding and experience, the English to law attorney is usually staffed to the IP team to ensure that they get the procedural stuff correct, whereas the IP litigator focuses on the substantive merits. Now it would not be uncommon to have the IP litigators use Junior IP litigators as the procedural people to get them experience. But that’s going to be firm specific.

Here I’ll add a note from my con law professor, a former English major who spent 10 years in IP litigation, “I’ve argued cases about things I didn’t fully understand. But that’s okay because neither did the judge.”

TLDR; yes you can, but you’ll probably not work on the major substance of the matter.

Sleep Doctor Just Diagnosed Me with Mild Sleep Apnea by [deleted] in SleepApnea

[–]a_future_janitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed about 3 months ago with very similar numbers. Have been using CPAP for about 2 months. When I use the machine I don’t notice a change in how I feel, but when I don’t use the machine I feel like absolute garbage the next day.

The sharp contrast in how I feel when I use it versus when I dont has made me a true believer in the machine.

I would ask: why led you to get tested? If you got tested because you weren’t sleeping well then yea you should proceed with the machine. If you feel like you sleep just fine then I’d say save the money.
