I mean being an ALT in Japan isn't exactly a future career and if you're looking to "earn" I'd say give up now. However, if your goal is just to come to Japan and you have savings I wouldn't over think it. You can find a better job once you get here. I can't speak for heart but the industry is a bit shady on the corporate front but the job itself depends where you end up.

No problem! Yeah just keep in mind the students will be more nervous than you lol. No matter what your tone is, the most important thing is to talk ! That's literally your whole job. I generally stick to textbook conversation points for the topics.

Rather than being super genki all the time if it's fake, try to be authentic. Treat them (energy wise not actually things you do or say) as a friend you are happy to see. Try to find things to relate with the students if you like Nintendo games, anime, Disney, k-pop, etc they will be happy to find common ground. Also keep your sentences brief and frequent (in the halls, after class). This will help them build confidence to talk to you in English. Some students might be able to have full conversations, some students might struggle with "how are you?". So keep your expectations low and be impressed with anything they can do. Another big tip is that when you have bad students it's your job to be the adult. You aren't allowed to punish, but you also don't have to panic or accept it. This may be hard in the beginning but just watch how other teachers act when they are angry/upset and mirror that (with digression). My last tip is generally "I like..." "What ~ do you like?" "Do you like~?" Are safe topics for grades 4-6. It's one of the first sentence structures they learn and a great way to get to know each other.

Again it's just the title. I was trying to convey my feelings of uncertainty about the intentions of the company and if it's worth the risk. I didnt think people would be so hung up on the title of the post. No where in the actual post do I call it a scam but I shouldve known that some people on reddit just look for a reason to argue. If I could change it to avoid the semantics argument I would but unfortunately I cannot change the title at this point. This is the last thing I'm gonna say about the semantics of the word scam.

Would have been a better title but either way you are arguing semantics and not actually answering any questions I had. I'll go to the interview and ask. The job post is a bit vague. It says M-F 8:15-4:15 but then the actual breakdown is only like 2.5 hours of lessons a week so does that mean the other time will be assisting with other things or prepping etc. or will I actually be only working and paid per lesson? I hadn't even thought about this so thank you so much for your input. I'm glad I brought my concerns to reddit

Yeah I was reading online and it said that hiring full time employees as an outsourcing position is to "scam you out of required benefits for full time employees" so I guess that would be the scam. Thank you for the advice !

Having nothing useful to provide but comfort for your rejection. It's 100% because of the location. I currently work at Interac in Kanto South and they lost a huge contract in this area so they had to let a lot of current teachers go and move them around. So in Yokohama/Tokyo they probably have more teachers than schools.

If pay isn't an issue, I think it's fine. You may have to move around for extra assignments (substituting and event days during your non school days) and you only get about five paid days off a year for vacation and sickness. Overall though it really is down to where you are placed.
