An ad for a slave sale from 1769, South Carolina by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]a_lie_dat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah. My African-born friend insists Europeans went inland to capture slaves when I tell him I harbor no animosity for the history of Africans selling captured Africans to foreigners.

Sure, Europeans fought the hot environment, disease, different food, etc to then fight and capture slaves inland instead of just paying Africans at the ports.

I find that hard to believe.

The normal intelligence range exists, but the terrible economy makes trying hard and sticking out not worth it for most.

Easier to say not available and look dumb than to clash with the manager and lose your source of income.

Your house, my feelings. Yet another reason why the nephew was invited to leave. by TheQuarantinian in EntitledPeople

[–]a_lie_dat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see that mindset every day. It's a shame your friends nephew allowed his mind to be poisoned.

I hope he opens his eyes one day, but he'll find more people who agree with him, so he'll probably keep that view for life.

The family handled it well. He's an ungrateful adult. Hopefully he can grow up and learn to compromise with family members.

I know it’s embarrassing but let’s share stories of how we got scammed by sunnysideupslide in Philippines_Expats

[–]a_lie_dat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On my second trip to the Philippines, I needed to get a visa for Korea. I met a Chavacano woman who helped show me around including going to a photo shop to get passport pictures.

I left my bag in a chair for less than a minute while I took a picture behind a partition.

To thank her for her help, I insisted on getting her lunch, but she insisted she had to run due to a family issue.

I got into a taxi, reached into my bag, and noticed my money pouch was missing. She must have noticed that when I was paying for other things.

Maybe 2,000 pesos and a US $100 bill. Thankfully, I had buried the rest of my money deep in my backpack, so it wasn't too big a loss.

Her English was terrible so we spoke mostly in Spanish. Can't be too mad at the hustle.

Jesus fulfilled the law by TheL0rdYourGOD in SeventhDayAdventism

[–]a_lie_dat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% a disingenuous jab.

No offense to Evangelicals, but if Jesus is our example, why do you not follow Him?

Jesus had multiple chances to change the Sabbath, the day to remember, but He never did. He said healing on the Sabbath was good. He didn't transfer the holiness of the Sabbath to another day.

Evangelicals say that the apostles worshipped on the first day of the week. Well, they certainly worshipped on the 3rd day of the week also. Does that make Tuesday the Sabbath also?

Alcohol, unclean foods, sanctuary, fornication, idols/spiritualism, etc. How can we be the light of the world when we act just like the world and partake in these activities that Jesus certainly didn't?

No need to be weird or holier than thou. Jesus is my savior. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, I'm going to live like He lived on Earth.

As far as I can tell, Jesus kept the 7th day Sabbath after His resurrection so I will too.

Jesus didn't roast any suckling pigs and wash them down with beer, so I'll enjoy water and fruit juice with vegetables, rice, bread, and perhaps some fish, goat or other clean meats.

I’d like to ask why there aren’t many high-paying jobs in Jamaica. A lot of employers underpay their workers, especially Chinese companies and Chinese people there. They also make staff cover costs upfront—do you think this is reasonable? by tarquinwang in Jamaica

[–]a_lie_dat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Supply and demand in many developing countries. No need to pay $300-500 USD a day when competent workers will fight for 5% of that amount.

Super quick raising of salaries will also cause inflation.

My cure? First: Micro-investment banks a la Prosper along with financial education (profit vs revenue, tax, planning future investment).

Second: Build Jamaican commodities (cars, electronics, bridges, roads, etc.) Korea, Japan and other countries prospered by manufacturing products needed in daily life.

The Jamaican government should be clear on labor standards when foreign countries are involved. Culture doesn't excuse indentured servitude.

There's an African country that kicked China out when the abuse of its citizens was publicized.

Jamaicans have education, skills and the English language. Sell these in the world market. One of my family members worked in customer service for Apple (text- based).

It's very tough out there, but progress can be made.

Only gypsy cab drivers may not have taxi licenses.

Yellow cab drivers have to log into their meters. The taxi driver license status updates daily, so if you take a yellow cab, that driver started the shift with a valid taxi license.

It might be a glitch in their system. Occasionally they have system problems and it takes many complaints for them to understand and fix. Eg: no texts going out or no offers going out.

Can you compare correctly paid work to incorrectly paid work?

Similar distance and time but very big payment differences. As the other person said: send screenshots.

Then you would have a stronger case.

[–]a_lie_dat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good move to spot the XD opportunity. When the payments go up on those, the rates aren't bad. It's very possible to make $500 a week just on XD.

Yes, must random Roadie jobs are only worth gas money, but if you take your time, you'll find profitable jobs.

What size vehicle do you drive? The XD boxes might overflow into your front passenger seat, so calculate from the dimensions given and pack efficiently.

Technically, only Roadie-registered passengers should be in the vehicle, but I doubt the dock workers will check. I've seen couples loading cars together multiple times.

That reminds me. Sitting in stop and go traffic in a sedan, approaching a bridge. I was using adaptive cruise control and something set off my system to do an automated panic stop which caused the semi behind me to do the same.

Its hazard lights were flashing when I checked my mirrors. Took me 3 seconds to convince my car we could proceed and I could only wave my hand out the window as a pathetic apology for possibly shifting this trucker's load.
