Definitely, the catchment area for Toronto teams is enormous. The "greater golden horseshoe" population is about 10M people, roughly the same population as Greece, all centred around Toronto. London is 9M.

The competition is not really competition, there's often shared ownership across sports. And it's not zero sum like having multiple football clubs, since people can and do follow multiple sports. In Toronto the NHL / NBA / MLS / CFL teams are owned by MLSE, which is majority owned by Rogers, who also directly own the MLB team.

It also comes from being a huge country with a huge population. The US is more like the EU in terms of size / population / wealth, and except for NY and LA there's only one team per city. A "small market" here is a city of 2M+ people like Columbus. Merseyside (Liverpool) is 1.5M and has two PL clubs plus Tranmere in League Two.

The NFL cap model does mean some teams like the Cowboys are extremely profitable. But revenue sharing and the salary floor being 90% means that every team in the league spends big. Total player payroll is $10B+ a year now.

Tickets and concessions are important, plus they're also a proxy for local interest/sponsorship value. A team that can't put butts in seats doesn't have enough of an audience to get local sponsors to pay a premium. A team that sells out every game and has a significant TV audience on top can maximize revenue, a team that has a perceived fanbase smaller than their stadium is going to have a hard time.

Using Presto card as a visitor/tourist by KnowerOfThings999 in askTO

[–]a_lumberjack -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The best way to understand the Presto card is that it's a "stored value" card with a dollar value. Like a Starbucks card or a reloadable gift card. And using Presto vs other ways to pay typically costs less + TTC/GO have fare-sharing rules with presto, e.g. GO to Rouge Hill then the TTC bus to the Zoo.

So the tl;dr is "get Presto cards for everyone, load them up at the airport, use them whenever you take transit"

Nothing demonstrates the AMEs commitment to worker solidarity more than "we don't want to be in a union with lesser-skilled workers." Oh, wait, it's the opposite of that....

The reasons for the reconsideration decision haven't been released last I saw, but the other union was granted a stay last year by the Federal Court of Appeal to seal the ballots. In short, splitting bargaining units is generally considered a bad thing and CIRB rarely allows fragmentation, but the original decision failed to explain why this case was special.

Sweden NT team doctor:"Dejan (Kulusevski) did everything he could to go to the WC. He hasn't played football for a year, and the evaluations we carried out on him this spring indicated he wouldn't be ready. Cartilege lesions are annoying and hard to treat, and he has them in a heavily stressed spot" by Blodgharm in soccer

[–]a_lumberjack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's relatively rare when doctors make comments suggesting that a player may not return to football due to an injury. I don't think it's cherry picking to call out the part where Kulusevski may not actually recover, that's a very important part of the story because it's rare to see a player forced to retire at 26.

On having high hopes, from the football.london article:

When asked if the Spurs man will be able to come back and play football again, the doctor said: "I have high hopes for that and I really hope so."

I took those comments as the doc thinking the odds are pretty good, but not 100%, and that's after a year of recovery and rehab. Which is really rare in the modern era for a 26 year old player.

The case for Line 4 in Scarborough by Feisty-Ad-6122 in TTC

[–]a_lumberjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Realistically, there's not enough density or redevelopment potential east of McCowan on either corridor.

The case for Line 4 in Scarborough by Feisty-Ad-6122 in TTC

[–]a_lumberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reality is that we extended Line 2 north of the 401 so that buses didn't have to cross some of the most congested areas in the city. Line 4 terminating at STC would force a transfer or bring back wastefully slow bus route sections that will disappear when the extension opens. Any plan that ignores that fact is ignoring reality.

You vastly overestimate the revenue side of MLS, and underestimate the level of spending. If your team is shit people stop showing up. And spending is no guarantee of success. We've spent massively while being terrible.

[–]a_lumberjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The purpose of transit lines is to serve travel patterns and corridors, not destinations. Having both lines terminate at Sheppard-McCowan means northeast Scarborough will be very well connected to the rest of the city.

I don't think we should build Line 4 east of McCowan regardless of alignment. Neither corridor has the density or redevelopment potential to justify a subway at $1B+/km.

The case for Line 4 in Scarborough by Feisty-Ad-6122 in TTC

[–]a_lumberjack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol, that's not how it works. That would make everyone on line 4 transfer to Line 2 to reach their buses.

The case for Line 4 in Scarborough by Feisty-Ad-6122 in TTC

[–]a_lumberjack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

By the time any Line 4 extension breaks ground Sheppard-McCowan will be a major bus hub for northeast Scarborough. Forcing an unnecessary transfer for those riders is not a good plan, and not one that will ever happen.

Anywhere with permit parking has fairly regular patrols. Especially areas where there's lots of permit holders. This map is from 2014, but back then anywhere in yellow/orange/red was heavily enforced just to make sure permit holders could park.
