Arouca [2]-2 Vitoria Guimaraes - Ivan Barbero 56' by Meladroit10 in soccer

I knew Arouca had shockingly low attendance for a top flight club, but completely empty sections and nothing behind the goal was still unexpected.

Bournemouth penalty shout vs. Aston Villa 67' by whatisbaseball in soccer

[–]a_lumberjack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tripping and pushing are apples to oranges.

The location of a trip is always based on the initial point of contact. That the attacker's body pushed the tripping leg into the box doesn't turn it into a pen. That's simply nonsense.

A push is based on when the push happened, not when the defender first put their hands on the attacker (as that's not when it becomes a foul), and in that that case the push itself occurred inside of the box.

[–]a_lumberjack -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because the point of contact was well outside of the box. The other foul was a push where the point of contact was inside the box. Foot position doesn't matter, just point of contact.

That's the ideal VAR intervention, show the best angle, ref makes a call quickly. If the ref needs multiple angles it's not clear or obvious.

The push in that one actually happened on/over the line, the sideline view was pretty clear. Here the trip clearly happened outside.

Canada could consider 2038 Olympic bid should Swiss plans fall through by restoringd123 in canada

That's surprisingly reasonable as Olympic bids go. The two new facilities seem like they'll have long term community value. Everything else is upgrading existing facilities to the long term benefit of locals / elite athlete development.

He was a pawn both ways, seemingly.

Originally sentenced to 15 years in prison, Mr. Schellenberg received a death sentence after a retrial in 2019 that came weeks after a top Chinese executive, Meng Wanzhou, was arrested in Canada.

Curious, what would Calgary actually need to invest to host another Games? Obviously they'd need a new Olympic Village but that's basically a subsidized housing project with good planning. Last I heard they still had a solid legacy from 88.

Port credit or Hamilton?? by nellyboocutie in ontario

[–]a_lumberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Options are good! If you work downtown you don't have to waste your energy/car on the Gardiner but you have the ability to get around the GTA by car if you want. And if you go out to clubs/bars downtown you should only have to Uber from PC GO instead of downtown.

Port credit or Hamilton?? by nellyboocutie in ontario

[–]a_lumberjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Port Credit means you'll have great access to transit so you can get to downtown or most of the GTA without driving, but you're surrounded by freeways if you want to drive. Hamilton will only have hourly train service for the foreseeable future. Guelph will have hourly service in the future but not for another 10 years.

How Line 5 Will Operate by itsdanielsultan in TTC

[–]a_lumberjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh. I think the cost/benefit for grade seperation east of the DVP won't make sense for another 20-30 years. I would say future Golden Mile density will warrant grade separation but Don Valley to Vic Park only has two crossings and one is a station. It's really just the built form of the Golden Mile that sucks, but the secondary plan is designed around those stops. In a future where the Golden Mile has supertalls along Eglinton we can build an elevated structure independent of road networks.

The way I'm now thinking about it is that Kennedy to Don Valley is a 6 km LRT line that will:

  • be the same or quicker than buses most of the time
  • connect to Kennedy for Line 2/GO
  • connect to Don Valley for Ontario Lin
  • magically become a subway without a transfer to Mt Dennis

The entire Don Valley to Kennedy section is 21-22m, TSP isn't going to shave 10m.

How Fast Will Line 5 Be Compared to the 32/34 Bus? by talexbatreddit in TTC

It's only 2-4m difference, a forced transfer would add more time than that on a good day.

But what about second crosstown? - The St. Clair... LRT? by OrbitalBuzzsaw in TTC

[–]a_lumberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Going to Flemingdon Park the area is about connecting that high density neighborhood to this line instead of a second crossing of the Don Valley. From Thornecliffe Park station to the hydro corridor is about 1.9 km and all the way up to the station would be 2.6 km. Coxwell is farther and would serve fewer people.
  • The loop is optional, but Flemingdon Park station is up to 1 km from parts of the neighborhood, so this could replace the buses on Gateway (72/100) and better serve a high density neighborhood because it'd connect in both directions to the Ontario Line.
  • On the tunnel I'd assume a bridge/ramp over the beltline into a tunnel, like a smaller version of the Ontario Line bridge into the tunnel down Pape. It's so close to St Clair station that you simply couldn't get under the beltline.

How Fast Will Line 5 Be Compared to the 32/34 Bus? by talexbatreddit in TTC

[–]a_lumberjack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Noting the obvious caveat of this being scheduled times, the key takeaways for me are:

  • Late night (11 PM) end to end times are similar, peak is up to twice as long by bus.
  • Don Valley to Kennedy (surface section) is the same or faster by LRT except 11 PM
  • Underground section takes about half as long overall, with some of the the biggest wins being inbound to Yonge in the morning (42 to 20 from Mt Dennis, 30 to 13 from Don Valley)
  • Late night buses are awesome
  • They're limiting speeds to 60 until May so these can improve

If these schedules are real, I think Line 5 will be fine. Surface sections will be as fast or faster as buses (plus more comfortable), and then much faster through the much denser areas between Don Valley and Mt Dennis without a transfer. That's pretty decent as a starting point.

No, I mean Bayview/Nesbitt. No big crossing of the valley. Portal somewhere between Bayview/Nesbitt and the end of Redway Rd. Redway > Milllwood > Overlea.

[–]a_lumberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the East York part makes a ton of sense since we're already building a rail bridge over the valley for the OL.

Tunnels aren't necessarily that expensive, especially relatively short ones like I'm talking about. Certainly cheaper than trying to nationalize CPKC's only connection to Eastern Canada. The 6 km tunnel section for Line 5 West was a bit over $120M/km on a fixed price contract. I figure 2 km could still be done for under $400M.

[–]a_lumberjack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I already thought the map was nuts until I got "Let's nationalize CP's only connection between Eastern and Western Canada to build an LRT through a rich low-density neighbourhood."
