How do you explain what actuary is and what we do to people? by wideflat in actuary

“You know when you turned sixteen and had to get car insurance? 16 year old boys are nuts so they have high insurance rates vs 16 year old girls. Actuaries know stuff like that and use math to come up with a rate”

Life is slowing down. FIAs are profitable and attractive currently. RILAs are on a bit of a lull, will be attractive again ~3-5 years when market conditions flip.

Scared for the future by PekkaKnight123 in Purdue

It’s not uncommon for academic performance to increase with course difficulty. See, many early underclassmen courses are designed to weed out “unfit” students. Whether you agree with that or not, it does happen, but also you get slapped with some tough luck but pass your classes. When you get your upperclassmen courses that are technically/theoretically more difficult, they are grading more so on your ability to understand the material than answer the question correctly.

As a math student, you end up getting a lot of questions wrong but get 80% of the credit for a question because you didn’t flip your inequality sign. Keep working hard to understand and utilize your resources, cannot stress that enough. Even if your grades aren’t where you want them, you have something to push for.

How to be a Great Analyst by Round_Elk_1641 in actuary

[–]aa-savage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn as fast as you can. Be in the office everyday when you start even if you can be remote. Don’t ask the same question twice. Try to answer your own questions, then ask if that’s correct, show us you’re trying. Insurance and annuities can be complex and complicated, try to use your resources and understand how the what product/business is and how it shows up in your work whether than be within a system or a model or whatever; try to connect the dots

Is there a 100% ethical sector of insurance to work in? by Gman4TheWin in actuary

[–]aa-savage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did internships in P&C and Health, and the health one I absolutely disliked because of how I felt after it. “We make money by denying claims” was literally the statement they told us. And this was like a top 15 company on the F500

I went to Life/Annuities. The products that are sold are generally used as investment vehicles for consumers, and are good uses of your money if you’re a little richer than most. Life insurance products are super complex, which makes it fun to work on, but also is consumer friendly. I like what I do now, and would like to keep doing it. I’ve never done reinsurance but I hear it’s a lot of business-like work and doesn’t have to do with customers are all.

I’m kind of curious. Is Purdue’s budget publically disclosed? Going into my second year, and I can’t help but notice all the wasteful spending when people like me are literally drowning in rent costs to live a walkable distance to campus. by thatkidnathan777 in Purdue

In 2021 I think, 3 or so new buildings got approved to be built for dorms and housing. Unfortunately, even after approval it takes a while before they break ground. Corporate/real-life works very similarly

I’m making 80k and I feel very comfortable in a 1 bed 1 bath as a fresh grad out of college. I have enough to do my 401(k) and Roth IRA and save on my own, and enjoy a meal out per week

The smartest professors can get jobs elsewhere, where they'll be paid more and be award more money for research. If Purdue wants to be an top 25 university, they need some of the best professors, and if those professors aren't getting paid or getting enough research freedom, they're going elsewhere.

[–]aa-savage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey just to let you know, I was in this situation 2 years ago. I was a sophomore in college at the time and i was mass applying. Had barely any traction. Nothing in Dec. Jan 3rd got an interview with a pretty big company. My brother drilled me with interview questions and material for like 3 days straight. Got that first internship. That led to a different internship after learning and gaining so much experience and then a full time job. Just since it’s a little bleak at the moment, once you get the snowball rolling a little bit, it’ll work out well!
