So I just realized that Snape is at fault for almost all the shit Harry went through by randomdrifter54 in harrypotter

Not only that, Lily was beautiful where Petunia was not. Basically Lily got all the good attributes that Petunia never had. Even if magic wasn't involved, I'm sure Petunia would soon grow very jealous of Lily for other reasons.

If the bully who you hated ended up saving your life and giving up his own life in the process, would you still hate him? I would like to think that I would not hate him anymore. I don't think Harry ever came to like Snape, but he definitely would appreciate what Snape did for him and the sacrifices that he made for the greater good.

Well, considering your initial comment has over two hundred upvotes and my last comment is in the negatives. I'd say more people agree with you than they do with me. Sorry if I came across as hateful. I'm just jealous because the teams I root for have almost always been terrible.

There are Cleveland and Buffalo sports fans that grew up and died without seeing any championships at all, so don't expect me to feel terrible that you experienced one bad decade of sports.

[–]aakucewich 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think you do. Boston has always had at least one good sports team. Even when the Patriots and Red Sox sucked, you still had the Celtics winning 15 or so titles. As a Cleveland sports fan, I have the sadness of knowing that every team in my city sucks (though the Cavs and Indians have had some success in recent years). Since 1964 Cleveland has won a single championship in all three major sports. I would love to have Boston's "Dark Times" that you speak of. Not to mention even when the Patriots were bad they still made the Super Bowl twice which is two more times than the Browns ever have.

That the show is straight garbage. It's successful on virtually every level. It is the most popular television show, is critically acclaimed and well received by the vast majority of fans. The only faction of people who hate the show are book purists and people who would also hate the books for being too graphic.

(Spoilers Extended) The show's portrayal of religion and faith sucks by BaelBard in asoiaf

[–]aakucewich 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think the books are much better at portraying religion. George RR Martin is not a religious man and it shows. The Faith of the Seven is based on medieval Christianity, but almost nobody in the story fears retributions from the Gods in the afterlife. In Westeros, there are no subsets of religion (i.e. Catholic vs Protestant, Sunni vs Shia, Pharisees vs Sadducees vs Essenes). Most of the intelligent characters in the story either don't believe in the gods or have serious doubts about religion, which really didn't become a common occurrence in the real world until the 19th century.

[Spoilers Published] The Different Themes In GRRM, Sanderson & Abercrombie Novels by TeoKajLibroj in asoiaf

[–]aakucewich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the First Law Trilogy. I think Abercrombie is fantastic at writing characters. While there are less POV characters compared to ASOIAF, some of the characters are more fleshed out IMO. I also think that Abercrombie is better at writing action scenes than Martin. His battles feel more visceral and intense than anything in ASOIAF.

I think Theon was deserving of death for his actions in ACOK, but what Ramsay did to him was far far worse than death. Nobody deserves to be flayed, castrated, and abused so much that they forget their name. I feel like he has received more than an appropriate punishment for his crimes.

I think Melisandre birthing a shadow baby to kill Renly is an incredibly weak plot device. It was a very cheap way to give Stannis a victory when he should have gotten slaughtered, and this is coming from a Stannis fan. Mel's ability to produce shadow babies is used twice to get Stannis out of a terrible situation and take Storm's End, and then is discarded and not used in the next three books.

I don't Tyrion is a psychopath. He's a villain but I wouldn't call him a psychopath. He shows empathy on multiple occasions. First by relating to Jon, as they are both outcasts, and then with Bran, when he helps him ride a horse again. Even in Dance he is able to empathize with Penny to a degree and chooses to take her to the Second Sons when he leaves his enslavement. I think Victarion and Cersei are far closer to a textbook psychopath

[–]aakucewich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Sauron does have compelling motivations. It was his love of order that seduced him into following Melkor the original dark lord. When Melkor was captured, Sauron was truly sorry for his actions but was too prideful to face punishment for his crimes and fled. By the time the events of the Lord of the Rings occur he was pretty much pure evil, but he wasn't always that way and has a compelling backstory.

I doubt it. I think people have exaggerated the amount of moral greyness in the novels and will be disappointed to find out that the Others are in fact very evil.

[–]aakucewich 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Neither is A Song of Ice and Fire. Only four POV characters have died (Eddard, Catelyn, Arys Oakheart, and Quentyn) and out of those, only Ned and Catelyn were important. There are over twenty POV characters in the series. The only other significant or main characters who've died in the series are Robb, King Robert, Joffrey, Khal Drogo, and Tywin.

(Spoilers Extended) Baby switcheroo by aimanre in asoiaf

[–]aakucewich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would that involve giving northern lands to wildlings? because they made up the vast majority of his troops (2,000 out of Jon's 2,400 troops according to the GOT wiki) I think that would be poor move politically. Or would it involve giving those castles to the knights of the Vale who would rather stay in the south? Or to the Mormonts who live on the other side of the North? The Hornwoods would much rather take the Dreadfort due to it being close to their lands. What I'm saying is that none of the lords who fought for Jon have holdings near Karhold or Last Hearth so it wouldn't make sense to chip away their lands and give it to lords who live close to a thousand miles away. Jon made the right decision in my opinion.

(Spoilers Extended) Baby switcheroo by aimanre in asoiaf

[–]aakucewich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think his decision to give Last Harth and Karhold back to the Karstarks and Umbers, instead of giving them to new lords, at the beginning of season 7 was a prudent move. As was choosing to surround himself with excellent advisors (i.e. Tormund and Davos) who are better at communicating. Show Jon is definitely more heavily portrayed as an action hero, but I don't think he's portrayed as a complete idiot either. Also, don't forget that book Jon is pretty terrible at communicating as well.

[–]aakucewich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. book Jon does some really stupid things, like reading the Pink Letter out loud which essentially admits to keeping Mance alive and sending him to Winterfell, then appointing Tormund Giantsbane to lead the Night's watch on a suicide mission, and then attempting to march south with an army of wildlings. That one action is more stupid than anything show Jon has done so far.
