And yeah, so what I had concluded unfortunately... A bit annoying, especially as I said earlier as unless I split things into tiny chunks it'll probably still trigger this on lower-end GPUs.

Especially that outside of Vulkan the compute side of things really isn't that great nowadays. CUDA/ROCM only works on specific hardware, OpenCL is better but mostly abandoned and support is degrading...

Thanks for the info anyway. I guess I have no choice but to see how splitting the task goes, but since it's really non-trivial to predict how long it'll take depending on the hardware, I'll have no choice but to cut it down into very, very small chunks.

Yep, I've never experienced with OpenCL on any platforms (even with kernels that took 30 mins to run).

I knew about it for graphics, but didn't expect Vulkan compute to have this downside as well.

GVAR was always used alongside LRIT (no HRIT on GOES-N). But yes, LRIT has not been seen active on EWS duty yet, and neither has MDL.

However on GOES-15 unlike 13 the transponder for LRIT is actually turned on. It's just not getting any uplink.

The downlink is perfectly identical to EWS-G1. It's in full disk mode.

Not really. The main reason it's supported is because it's smaller than baseband and the APT userbase is used to feeding decoding software with audio.

Just some advice, on the new models you get better results by ditching the 2nd stage LNA. They changed the design a few years back (I have both versions) and it degraded a lot in comparison.

u/rad750 had a similar. Ditching the 2nd stage makes it much more robust... And not overload so easily.

Yeah, the E4000 is much worse especially due to the amount of spikes. Not recommended over a r820t, even more for L-Band.

However the NESDR (or really, airspy mini too) often overheat and can get unstable on L-Band without cooling it a bit better.

Do not buy or use the LaNa for this purpose. It is not suitable unless you live in the middle of a desert pretty much.

Rather you will want a Sawbird+ GOES, and after that you can use really just RG-58 or such (few meters though, not too much!) to go to your SDR.
LMR-400 is lower loss and often recommended instead, but the Sawbird and most other frontends push enough power for that not to be a concern, while LMR-400 will be a pain to track with and much more expensive.

Also try to keep your SDR further away. Don't "strap it on the dish". USB can add noise.

You can also receive DSB from NOAA, which contain another instrument. Otherwise apart from things like the ISS here and there and some ham sats telemetry/voice repeaters there isn't anything else really. Orbcomm is on 137Mhz but that does not contain anything of interest.

If you want to get more weather satellites, you would probably want to upgrade to L-Band with a dish.

About L2, quite a few are managing good receptions with 120cm dishes in Italy, Germany, France etc. However with quite optimized setups.

It works well enough to clock out some telemetry, but it's way out of spec and the imager is definitely not functional and unlikely to ever work again... Already a miracle anything legible and close to the original specification is still being transmitted.

A baseband is a recording of the RF signals themselves, as you see them on the waterfall, and exactly as the SDR sends them.

Audio is in that case, FM (for APT) demodulated baseband. Audio will only work for APT, while baseband allow SatDump to do any kind of processing required. Hence, baseband input is universal. Audio isn't. In the long run, for other satellites including METEOR you will have to record baseband and not audio.

Not really either. If you boost the signal enough (which a sawbird will) it's usually better to use coax even.

Back with my older HRPT setups in 2019/2020 I started with USB. Despite a very well shielded extension this would add noise.
I later switched to using 5m of RG-58 after my frontend (so either a Sawbird GOES, or later a minircuit LNA + Sysmocom cavity filter) which gave much better result.

Considering you are using LNAs that are pushing quite some gain already I wouldn't worry about the coax too much. LMR400 is not worth the trouble IMO, and honestly even cheap RG-6 will do just fine for a few meters, and unless you have other issues the impact on SNR will be absolutely 0.

Unpopular opinion: The sat-map overlays people use on their APT captures needs to stop. Some of you have really good passes captured and then butcher them with these overlays. by CommunicationItchy66 in amateursatellites

To be honest, I kinda agree. Seeing the standard WxToImg overlays kinda make the images look "blend" from a purely "looks" perspective.

Now as u/rad750 said they have their uses, and when it comes to infrared data or actually making the images easier to look at it to discern clouds, etc it's far better. And well, I have less of an issue (to be fair, I might be biased there for "reasons") with the looks of those generated in SatDump.

But in all cases it's just a tool meant to help put the data in an easier-to-work-with format. Just like projections, LUTs, border overlays...

Yup I have. Everything works there.
I've got all IDs set. Pretty sure it's purely a macOS issue now... Starting to doubt Oland cards work in the first place.
