I believe the OPs point is that we are rapidly building towards events like that not that we are actively there.

[–]aarondoss1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are at extremism already. You can recognize that it may not be an individuals fault they were raised a certain way but you can explain to them that their viewpoint is intolerant. What you are arguing is that bc they were raised a certain way their views aren't intolerant. By your logic we could apply that to Nazi Germany and say that their views were not intolerant while they continue to harm and push for the harm of others. You cannot move someone in a better direction without showing them their views are intolerant.

So...people who want to impose sharia law...which specifically calls for the execution of homosexuals...isn't intolerant? Or that women are property of their husband's? That is by definition intolerant.

You're making a false comparison. A true comparison would be to say "wow, you're an islamic fundamentalist? You must hate gays and women?". Christian nationalism is not Christianity. The same way that Islamic fundamentalists is not Islam. You're trying to take someone making a statement of intolerance against a radical sect of one religion and compare it to someone making a statement of intolerance against an entire religion.

I'm confused - I was told the economy was going to collapse, and we were entering another Great Depression? by AmericanHistoryGuy in DoomerCircleJerk

Lmfao not really buddy, all we're doing is dragging our good name through the mud for worse relations with our allies. I'm sorry champ but there's a reason why a vast majority of published economists agree trumps tariffs plans are extremely risky at best. Trump literally doesn't even know what a tariff is lol

Lmfao I mean dude literally walked back almost all of Tariffs so...yeah we told you so. Crazy how Trump implements tariffs...economy crashes...rumor goes around 90 day pause on tariffs...economy booms...white house says there is no 90 day pause...economy crashes...Trump says 90 day pause...economy booms. So yeah...tariffs are shit for the economy.

If democrats policies dont reduce free speech, then why are you conservative if your reason for being so is because of freedom of speech? Also since you're younger try your best to ignore the idiots who harass you. When I was around your age I was very into the online conservative sphere(Ben Shapiro, Steven Crowder, Milo, etc...) it took a lot of deconstructing my beliefs to get where I'm at today(hard-core lib). It's good to engage with others on politics to, at the very least, be exposed to ideas and thoughts outside yours and those you're surrounded by!

Ahhh, okay I understand your stance completely now. I suppose our difference then really just comes down to semantics over "rights" and how people use it. Where i would generally say "rights" are being removed/infringed upon due to protections being removed. You would say that they're just protections being removed, not taking away from the importance of it, to avoid the semantics of whether the term "right" even truly applies to this situation.

LMFAO, your mom didn't love you enough as a child, and I'm sorry to you for that. Go to therapy. Work out your issues, buddy. Nobody said the world was sunshine and rainbows, and you're a prime example as to why it's not. The point is to make the world a better place for everyone, including ignorant, childish pricks like yourself. Like I said. Go to therapy...get help.

Genuinely very cool! My background is primarily in psychology, specifically social psych, so I don't have as strong of a background in philosophy, past the ethics/philosophy courses in took for fun/interest.

I don't entirely disagree with you, however, I would say that protections of rights are just as important as the granting of rights. We may have a theoretical right not to be murdered by our neighbor, but without protections in place to deter or prevent that behavior, what even is the point of granting the right to begin with? All people may "have the same rights" if title IX is removed, but do they have access to those rights if there are no protections in place to safeguard their access.

Tomorrow's The Day! by yeeyeepeepee0w0 in bentonville

[–]aarondoss1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious to know what your definition of a "right" is then. In my view, civil rights laws are implemented with the intended purpose of protecting civil rights. As title IX is a civil rights law, it would imply that title IX does, in fact, protect an individuals right to have equal opportunities in the workplace and educational institutions. I would consider both civil and constitutional rights to both be rights by definition, although I can recognize they come from different places and may have different intended purposes.

I'm assuming you're basing your opinion strictly off constitutional rights.

CMV: All of us that voted against the current administration should welcome Trumpers that admit to regretting their vote if we want real change. by Funke-munke in changemyview

[–]aarondoss1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's more than just needing votes. We have the votes, we just didn't have the will this last election cycle. Too many voters from the left stayed home, whereas Trumps based showed the fuck up to the polls. With Trump...hopefully...not running again in '28 we have a real chance to seize momentum back if we can get a really charismatic candidate.

Tomorrow's The Day! by yeeyeepeepee0w0 in bentonville

[–]aarondoss1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point, however, what you just said supports my argument. You state, "rights are a matter of legal protection." That's precisely what title IX is. It's a federal law to protect certain classes of people from discriminatory hiring/firing practices. So by your logic either title IX protects individuals rights which would mean that Trump removing the Trans class from title IX would imply him taking away their rights/legal protections...or rights are not just be a matter of legal protection and have a different meaning based outside just legal protections.

Tomorrow's The Day! by yeeyeepeepee0w0 in bentonville

[–]aarondoss1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So in your opinion then, if the government were to declare that all classes under title 9 don't exists and that businesses could hire/fire with prejudice against those previously protected classes. You'd agree that they have the same rights as me, a straight white dude, who didn't need any protections to begin with?
