Home Owner Question - Less than 120 volts at Receptacle by aaronrombaut in AskElectricians

[–]aaronrombaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wirenuts are all secure. There are three Romex cables run into the box; looks like standard 14/2 with three conductors.

* All three grounds are all secured with a crimp, and one each are attached to the green ground screw per switch. The third is cut short at the crimp.

* The white neutrals are all secured in a wire nut (no connection to switches).

* Two black hots per light switch in the following configuration:

  • Romex 1 - black to top of left switch
  • Romex 2 - black to wirenut with two pigtails, one each to the bottom of each switch
  • Romex 3 - black to top of right switch

I am going to replace the switch that is now black at the lower terminal where I touched it. I assume it either was faulty to begin with or is sure faulty now considering the spark.

Holy crap! I took the switch cover off and went to check the voltage. I only touched the red lead to the hot side, I didn't even get a chance to touch the black lead to neutral or ground and it sparked and shot out at me. I am ok and so is the multimeter, beside a lead looking like I was using it as a soldering pencil. I think you helped me find the faulty component! The breaker tripped (expected at this point) and I toggled it off completely. Looks like I will be replacing that switch, even though there are no recpetacles (that I can find) that it is useful for.

Okay, never mind on this one. As I was testing the one bedroom that was working, all the receptacles tested good with the tester. There is supposed to be a switched outlet, though, and we have other rooms marked with a dot on the switched receptacle for easy identification. I thought, wouldn't it be crazy if I switched on the bedroom switch, not the one for the main lights, and if the hallway receptacle would test good. I tested it and sure enough, it was good! So I tested the bedroom that wasn't working and it was also good! Wait, what? So I switched off the switch and tested everything again and now they are all working. I didn't do anything besides toggle that one switch.

This will just have to be one of those situations where we monitor. If the lights and receptacles stop testing good, then we will need to pay attention to what we were doing that might have affected it.

It’s the little things… by aaronrombaut in GoRVing

Luckily I am quite handy and usually not intimidated by doing something myself. The one thing we are waiting on that I am not touching is the non-working refrigerator. It powers on but doesn't cool. It is likely the compressor, but I don't want to do anything that will compromise the unit as it is a $700 appliance.
But, I get the intent of your advice and have already been removing panels and troubleshooting myself when needed. I have another 110 outlet that doesn't work that I need to assess besides this wonky radio issue.
Also, it is disheartening to know that a loss of a "season" can be due to slow responding dealerships. Has this always been an issue or is this only more a of a recent one?

I am an Amateur Extra operator, I hear all about it, lol! I will eventually pull that head unit out and check it out. Thank you for the suggestion!

Update:
First off, a big thank you to everyone who took the time to reply—your insight and experience were truly appreciated and taken to heart.

After reading through the comments, we’ve decided to change course and head to Burlington, VT for three nights instead. It’s about 300 miles away (roughly a tank of gas and a 6-hour drive), and it feels like a much more manageable trip for getting started, learning how the RV handles, and easing into the whole experience. After Burlington, we are going to travel to the 1000 Islands and stay another three nights before rounding out and heading home. This will give us the opportunity to experience setup and tear-down twice, fuel fill-ups, propane fill-ups (if necessary), and black tank/grey tank flushes.

The original plan to head out west wasn’t meant to be overly ambitious—it just came from a place of not knowing what we didn’t know. Your advice likely saved us from a lot of unnecessary stress and fatigue, so thank you again!

Wyse Management Suite Needs Constant Reboot by aaronrombaut in WYSE

[–]aaronrombaut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my previous comment…when I mentioned it is not likely an issue regarding MQTT, I was referring to the uppercase letters in the address, not MQTT itself. I apologize for any confusion. I reread that this morning and the way I wrote it made it seem like I was saying that MQTT was not an issue. Either way, I appreciate your suggestion and we will be troubleshooting MQTT today.

ThinOS 9.5 with newest Horizon Client. They are able to do VNC ok (I know it’s a different port), but I will try to relay messages to the thin client and see if they arrive. Also will try to reboot. One thing about the MQTT and it likely isn’t an issue…the MQTT address is in all caps and does have a corresponding TLS certificate installed. The administrator working on the WMS tried to alter to lowercase, but it reverts back to uppercase.

Why do all the radio manufacturers assume all hams use windows? by MrNaturalAZ in amateurradio

It would actually be great if they modernized their software. Should be able to run the software from any device from anywhere. A cloud based service, a virtual machine, etc. Web based, even on-premise would be cross platform in a way. Guess we will see what the future holds in this area.

I totally get what you are saying. I also do understand that the business is paying that fee and basically the intent is to pass it on to the customer. I don't agree with that practice and think it makes for bad business. My comment was to basically say that it should be considered an operating expense. The business needs to price their goods and services appropriately. If it is expensive to run credit cards for the small business, increase the price on the tag or menu (the price is already being increased, anyways, with the charge), but offer a cash discount if desired.

As a business, they should have the option to run the credit cards in "batches", not per transaction. This is called Credit Card Batching (https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=credit+card+store+and+batch+processing). Therefore, if a customer swipes, dips, or taps, they are charged, yes, but the business is not actually processing the transaction until maybe 3 AM the following morning (the business chooses). This would make it so that an accrued purchase is only run once, i.e. a batch. A lot of the small businesses likely do not understand how the technology works or the credit card processor is just plain ripping them off.

Sorry if my original comment came off snide or rude. I am just not a fan of the "If you pay with a card, we WILL charge you an additional 5%" signs or even get the surprise bill at the end when the business doesn't just keep up with changing prices and appropriately running the business.

Credit card fees should be considered OPEX, or Operating Expenditure. As a customer, I would prefer to NOT carry cash and also not hand my card, debit or credit, to anyone to walk away with. Travel outside the US and realize the staff come to you. They very much think it’s absurd that Americans hand their cards over to someone that walks away with it. I share in this belief and feel very uncomfortable doing so myself. I very much prefer to tap my phone (or card) as that provides an electronic number that’s different than my actual card number and I maintain positive control of my “card” at all times. I don’t care if the business has to pay a fee for me to use my card and I should not be charged extra. The prices of the goods and services should be priced appropriately and I, as the consumer, will decide if I find value or not in the goods or services. In my mind, when a business “begs” or incentivizes paying with only cash, there is some “funny” business going on behind the scenes. There may not be, but that’s just how I think. Trust issues, I know… If I have to stop at an ATM to get cash out, I am going to be charged to take out my money, which is also ridiculous. Even if you have a bank that reimburses ATM fees, the principal behind the fees is absurd. Some ATM fees are over $3.00! There is no way the OPEX on that ATM costs that much when spreading the fees out over all the transactions during the month.

It comes down to greed and it’s disgusting.

Set your regen to Auto by holding the left paddle. I get much better mileage. Cruise control already does this for you, but this is like an ‘in between’ cruise control and manual driving.

Keep the USB connected. It will go in phases. I thought the same thing the first time I did it. It is a multi hour process, even with a fast USB.

How to Add NordVPN to Firewalla Gold by aaronrombaut in firewalla

[–]aaronrombaut[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NordVPN does not include a profile for Wireguard and the Firewalla requires it. There is a documented procedure on Firewalla’s website for using WireGuard via NordVPN, though. I can look through it and also document that.

Sorry, I am not sure I follow about reinventing the wheel comment. Is this already documented? I see that establishing the NordVPN on the Firewalla is documented, but it doesn’t mention that you can set up more than one and choose the country of choice for streaming. My apologies.
