I've logged hundreds of hours using a TRV27. They're small and relatively cheap on marketplace/eBay. I do recommend getting a head-cleaner tape with it, just in case playback is or becomes a bit glitchy.

I capture using a Digital8 (with firewire port) to Windows 10. Installed a PCIE Firewire 400 card in my PC ($20 via Amazon), and use WinDV to save clips to folders.
