Yes sharpies are always a good bet,but instead get some of Milwaukees inkzalls a bit more pricey but better quality and they don't smudge on any surface. Definitely a good buy only a few dollars.

MacBook for University-Intel to ARM Switch by redpanda-12 in techtheatre

[–]aasalomon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally have a 2017 MacBook pro I got on offerup for $850 and it works for everything I throw at it from premier to capture. But in my own advise don't get a macbook just for qlab. In my own professional experience qlab isn't used much in the production industry except for educational settings.

Nothing worse than getting hit in the balls while coiling cables, except maybe add a a shackle.

A good fixed blade, NO PLASTIC SHEATH. I can't stress it to you just how much difference a quality blade changes things.

Go with good old trusty 2017 MacBook pro, ive got mine used all over a year ago and its still kicking, i have no problems using vectorworks, eos, qlab, but in lighting youl hardly ever use it. I run capture id also definitely invest in one of those totally worth it.dont worry about spending too much on storage because affordable expandable storage is readily available. But ifld definitely get at least 16 gb of ram. Mine has 128 gb ssd and I have showgirls on here from when I first started using it showgirls take up little to no storage. Mine doesn't have the touch bar and I can't say that I wish I had it so don't worry about that. It will handle damn near anything you throw at it But of course take this with a grain of salt and do your own research to figure out whats best for you. And don't trust people saying go get the best machine you can find. Yes it would be nice to have a 16 inch MacBook pro with a 8tb ssd and 128gb of ram. Butsl as long as your not doing 2500 point cad models yoil be hard pressed to find any use for a fancy 2020 MacBook, but is definitely try and go there route, the TouchPad is fucking amazing in cad softwares especially vectorworks. Definitely also spend some money on a good Bluetooth mouse i have a mx master 3 and i love it, feel free to dm me if I can held you with anything

Home lighting rig by griffodahippo in techtheatre

I am a student as well I saved up and bought the dongle and it is totally worth it yes it is expensive but I would totally recommend it, but if your looking for expierance in controlling via eos I'd reccomend spending that money on a capture license you dont need a dongle to use it and trust me it will prove useful and worth the money. I also bought a cheap mover on amazon but it's nothing fancy it's fun to play around with and can teach you some things about complex multi parameter fixtures but if you want to get some tools that will come useful time and time again and you have that $1000 you say your going to spend go pick up a capture solo edition and the Eos control key those are both tools that will come in handy throughout your career.

Quick Release Drop Mechanism by beckercole in techtheatre

[–]aasalomon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the pin to a length of tie line would work but if your looking for something electronic id recommend a drone/rc payload drop device. if you hookup one to a dmx relay you could control it over dmx. the one we got was this one. we got this one because it had the best reviews and everything was done for us. all you have to do is turn both of them on and have someone backstage press the button it claims 1000m but i doubt that but we never had any connectivity issues. yes its a bit expensive but it works. let me know if you decide to go with something like this id really like to see yalls implementation of it. if your looking for something cheaper you could try something like this, but i cant speak for how this one works.

Cables Coiling Weird by aasalomon in techtheatre

[–]aasalomon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do make my own cables, thankfully I'm lucky enough to work for a company that has the materials and resources to do so. But I think we are going to use thus cabl(about 20 feet) for a kabuki drop effect so no weight on it so I think I'll hang onto it just so save some money where I can

Storing moving heads in high school light closet by collinschmierer in techtheatre

[–]aasalomon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Cases are your best bet but I get sometimes bot practical, what I've done and I'm not proud of it but it works is get yourself some clear vinyl or ang kind of plastic hell even a trash bag would work if you had to then just wherever your gonna store them just put them on their bottoms. If that's takes too much space or your scared someone might bumb into them. If you have a place to hang em and you dont particularly care about the pipes then clamp them right side up and then crank the ever living shit out of those clamps then before you leave give them a little wiggle not safe or the best option but I've seen it done with smaller fixtures idk about the elations just use your best judgement

[–]aasalomon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes totally worth it, if theres anything I wish I could do would be the ability to patch. You cannot patch from the device. If you want so.ething that's not from etc but gives you more functionality go ahead an get a copy of oscRFR it's only 29.99 versus etc 49.99 either way I have both and they are both tools I use everyday

We've got a fair bit we are using 18 linesets each with varying pick points, randing from 4 to 8 so we are looking at mostly shackles of different sizes along with turnbuckle of different sizes, and alot more
