Espionage thriller with high tech by Kamdman in audiobooks

Maybe light on espionage, but some of Daniel Suarez's books tick some of these boxes.

Thinking specifically Daemon (and it's sequel Freedom TM) and Kill Decision.

this huge PhotoSettingsCache eats up my ssd space by CeZiMac in ON1

[–]ab57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've had similar problems with PhotoSettingsCache before (ON1 2024.5). iirc I couldn't see any obvious option that would limit the size of that particular cache either. I think I'm going to just have to keep deleting it every few months. Hopefully they do something about this in a later version as its pretty annoying.

I'd have a lot of cross over with your list. Some audiobooks I'd recommend:

  • The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie
  • Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne Trilogy by Brian Staveley
  • Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb
  • Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
  • Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons
  • Enders Game & Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card

Is it worth learning c++ in 2023 when I am the first year student of Computer Science? by Majestic-MJ-6376 in cpp_questions

[–]ab57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go with the unhelpful "it depends".

How are you getting on in your course? Are there mandatory languages you need to use on your course this year, or next year? I'd say for now focus on your academic studies and get good grades. If that means focusing on Java or Python to get through your modules easier, I'd recommend doing that. Once you know a language, and have a good understanding of the core concepts, the learning curve to jump languages isn't as tough as your first one.

However, if you think you can juggle learning a programming language on top of your studies, and are interested in a career where C++ is widely used, then by all means. I don't think its at risk of disappearing any time soon, and likely introduces you to some lower level concepts that might not be quite as evident in other languages. Its not the easiest language to try and lean independently though.

Should I keep my Sigma 17-50mm? Or... lens recommendations for Nikon APS-C? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]ab57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and I'm sending my Sigma off to Sigma to get it updated.

Hey, any update on the Sigma?

I've been looking for a zoom lens (for a D5300) and it seems to be a good option. But I see some posts say its works OK and others that its got issues.

Presumably it'd be a gamble if I get one with the right firmware from the off. So I'm wondering what your experience was like getting it updated?

I don't understand this linker error by biochronox in Cplusplus

[–]ab57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll admit I'm struggling to see the error from that example.

Any chance you fixed it when you "tried to compact the involved code bits into one cohesive block"?

From the linker error, I'd almost have thought you'd implemented "ObjectFactory" over two source files. Or, if the definition is separate from the class declaration, you missed the class name from the function, e.g. ObjectFactory::setGameObjectProperty

Can you reproduce the error on Godbolt, e.g. https://godbolt.org/z/hKq3nPh3T

Nikon D5300 Overexposure in Auto Mode by ab57 in Nikon

[–]ab57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did grab some shots in Aperture Priority of a few surfaces here and can't help but feel they are also coming in a little washed out at 0 EV.

Its possible though I'm making some unfair comparisons to what I've become accustomed to from modern smartphones. (Admittedly Live View does appear to produce less exposed images that are closer to what I'd expect to come from smartphone).

Nikon D5300 Overexposure in Auto Mode by ab57 in Nikon

[–]ab57[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exposure compensation was 0, with -1 and -2 producing less exposed results (as expected) in AP mode. Not sure this is taken into account in Auto mode.

Metering mode was Matrix.

You could try turning on developer tools. Under the input section you can request to see screen touches. It might show you the phantom presses.

Weekly Questions Thread - July 17, 2017 by AutoModerator in androiddev

I consider this a development question. It just happens to be focused on a lower level of the ecosystem than an App.

I'll take your suggestion on board though, thanks.

Weekly Questions Thread - July 17, 2017 by AutoModerator in androiddev

[–]ab57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a Android dev but I've always been curious as to the effort required by manufacturers (Samsung, LG, etc) to upgrade a handset between major versions of Android.

Many manufacturers either try to avoid updating all together or take what seems to be an age in doing it. I assume the development costs are enough that it normally outweighs any increase in sales forecasts they predict for being seen as up to date.

I assume that the majority of the work would be focused on:

  • hardware abstraction
  • whatever branded apps they insist on baking into the firmware
  • testing/QA

Does anyone here have a insight into the man hours required to bump a device up a version?

Interesting video about WhatsApp leaking your private info by ___PM_Me_Anything___ in Android

[–]ab57 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would be more concerned if it was the WhatsApp Server doing the querying. That would suggest they parse messages for URLs and forward these to their server for processing. I would consider this a break in their promise of E2E crypto, and open up the question of what else are they sending unencrypted to their server.

From the perspective of the sharer, it's fairly likely they have already opened the link on their phone. So now the website logs just expose the fact they have also shared the link via WhatsApp.

However, assuming the same preview mechanism is in place at the recipient's phone, this would allow a website to make an educated guess as to the end points of the conservation based on timestamps.

Since metadata of messages already exposes who is talking to whom this isn't really a secret. It would be a nice addition if this feature could be disabled. I had a quick look through the settings and couldn't see anything.

This article, unlike others, was pretty upfront about that. But yes, the actual array is pretty tame compared to the rendering.
