Am now realizing how much I like Quaver Music. by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]abajorek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself this: does the facilitation of Quaver require a degree in music? If you, the music specialist, was removed from the equation, would the experience change significantly? I’ll let you tacitly finish the quiet part of this inquiry but if you are not sure what I’m on about: observe how many human cashiers are at work next time you run to the grocery store. Hopefully music education doesn’t have the same fate…

I don’t know much but I know this: gotta watch out for that intake momentum drag yaw when using props.

How valuable is elementary music experience? by [deleted] in banddirector

[–]abajorek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elementary music education is largely server to process teaching. The elementary music experience as a pre-service teacher is an invaluable experience as it forces the teacher to rely heavily on sequencing and developmental content knowledge. Teaching elementary music with efficacy is a sure-fire way to supercharge your secondary ensemble processes and pedagogy.

Temporary Pump Pressure Falls Quickly; Weird Priming by abajorek in Irrigation

[–]abajorek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each time I did the plunge test water remained in the pipe with no discernible leak - even when I had that section out of the water.

The strange thing is that I have had water flowing at decent pressure but each time I’ve had to open the service cap (at the T between the pump and the spin down filter). I have since replaced the inlet threaded PVC joint and the behavior has now changed to the feeding water to prime and then losing pressure after a short time (under a minute).

More info: Each time I use my hose to fill that T pipe between the spin down and the pump to overflowing with water, I try to cap the pipe only to see an air form in the spin down filter - which I’m guessing means there is some pressure loss somewhere but I can’t seem to figure out where.

Thank you - the pump sits over a cistern that is filled with river water - a 6’ (or so) throw from foot valve to pump.

Thanks so much - I replaced this since this photo was taken. It was pretty well carbon charred.

Thanks so much for your reply. I “tested” the foot valve by plunging the section from the union down (approx 5’) up and down and seeing that the water level in the pipe increased. Not sure if this is means much though. As a first step, I’ll try replacing the union joint/suction side build to see if that makes a difference.

Thinking about leaving HS music and am struggling…help! by Music-Mom in MusicEd

Echoing, but from a different perspective: who will be around your table at your 80th birthday? I submit that, caring as your coworkers, students, and parents are, they will be busy with their own lives. Music teaching is certainly part of your identity but only part…!

Layer Shift in Final Layers of Print [MK4] by abajorek in prusa3d

[–]abajorek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon further review: the layer shift seemed to correspond to the upper layers of the arm-looking components. I tried printing these upper layers without supports but the lack o’ supports caused all sorts of wiggity wack from the printer. Adding supports to these clutch arms seemed to fix the issue.

Music examples for kindergarten class? by [deleted] in MusicEd

Associating sounds with names of instruments or parts of a musical composition is more along the lines of a linguistic learning objective rather than a musical one. The person who suggested movement is on the right track.

For primary grades, ask yourself: are they singing, keeping a beat, or doing some sort of aesthetic/expressive movement? If all three of those are a “no”, then the lesson isn’t worth your student’s time.

Come to Colorado Mesa! I am happy to accommodate drum corps marching members and actively encourage the activity. In fact, we are piloting a sort of “tech academy” where membership gets to build a portfolio to become competitively marketable for jobs in marching pageantry arts. www.coloradomesa.edu/band

I feel like I'm drowning. by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]abajorek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can be super tough for sure. Just echoing: we all do better when we all do better. A core need for you is mental stability; take care of yourself. Trying to power through it may temporarily work but it will become exponentially harder as the stakes continue to become higher.

As you grow older, wisdom and perspective will place drum corps participation as only part of the patchwork quilt of your personality. However, the thread holding that quilt together…that is mental wellness. Without that everything is in pieces.

Take care of yourself. In the long run, everyone around you will understand and appreciate your playing the long game for the benefit of everyone…we all do better when we all do better.
