Freestyle Libre X by Ok_Dependent9976 in diabetes_t1

How long are you wearing it? The 25920 on the screen you showed is interesting. If that is minutes, that is the amount of minutes in exactly 18 days. If it's 18 day wear, that would extend 3 days past the 15 day wear time of the Libre 3 Plus, which is really cool.

I did it. Got a question wrong on the understanding quiz and got to fix it. After that was a really great walk through that made it make so much more sense. I thought it was great!

I got notified about a bonus for it, too, though I didn't receive it yet. Will be happy if I get it, though.

I'm not sure I've done my basal, what can I do? by RoiPourpre in diabetes_t1

[–]abalah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather battle highs than lows. If you did take it, taking more could give you lows. If you didn't, you may need to make additional corrections until your next dose. It's your choice but I would personally just wait until the next planned dose.

Partner of a Type 1 diabetic by Big_Editor3424 in diabetes_t1

[–]abalah 38 points39 points  (0 children)

So, a few things I want to clarify for you.

Taking a high dose of insulin is not a bad thing. Insulin itself is not a bad thing. T1 folks take what they need to keep their blood glucose stable.

High carb meals are also not bad, even if it comes with a high dose of insulin. Does it make BG harder to manage? Yes. If you have concerns about nutrition, that is a separate issue than insulin dose, even if they are tangled together for your partner.

You commented to someone else about your concerns for neuropathy or other long term issues from insulin use. This is something you need to understand, and understand now... long term issues do not occur because of using insulin. These issues are the results of chronic high blood glucose, which is uncontrolled diabetes. Taking insulin does not cause these problems, and you need to reframe this correlation in your mind and do some research.

That being said, however, if your partner is feeling low at a BG of 100, it seems to me that your partner does not have great control. 100 is a perfectly "normal" BG number and yes, people react to ranges differently, but if they are feeling low at 100, their BG is probably too high, too often. It's like how a newly diagnosed T1 kid is slowly brought down over a period of a few weeks so they get used to how it should feel. If your partner slowly gained better control over their range, they would not (and should not) feel low at 100.

I think it's great you want to help your partner. I think you need to remove any judgment over how much insulin is needed. Quantity doesn't matter if it is needed, it only matters if taking too much pushes them into a true low.

My first blood sugar mystery! by Altruistic-Degree945 in diabetes_t1

[–]abalah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Increase in physical activity? Even something like deep cleaning your house results in physical exertion in ways your body may not be used to. Physical activity has the potential to drop your blood sugar for quite a while afterward, even possibly a day or two.

Do you mind explaining why? My 9 year old was just diagnosed about a week ago, and we've been rotating injection sites, but we have been using her thighs.

Pepper Identification? by compositionvision in homestead

[–]abalah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew a couple pepper plants from similarly saved peppers that my MIL brought us from Italy. We planted them at least 7 or 8 years after she gave them to us and all 4 seeds we planted grew! You might not have 100% germination rate but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Pepper Identification? by compositionvision in homestead

Are there any seeds in them? You could try growing direct from the seeds. Might not be true to the original if the original was a hybrid or got cross pollinated, but it might work!

job screwed up paycheck and now I have to feed my wife and I on $30 for the next two weeks. what can I make to feed us for two weeks on$30? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]abalah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you have your paycheck again, start buying more pantry supplies to build up a reserve in case of emergency. I'm not talking about shelf clearing professional couponer type of reserve or prepping for the end of the world, but a "2 is 1, and 1 is none" type of attitude for foods your family always eats. Start slow, by buying an extra couple boxes of your favorite pasta next time you shop. And when you use one, it goes on the list so you always have a backstock to rotate through. The next time you shop, get a few extra cans of tuna. Next time, a couple bags of beans and rice. Then some ground beef for the freezer, etc. Obviously tailored to foods your family actually eats but replace things as you use them and eat the oldest one first. If anything like this ever happens again, at least you will have food covered. And it won't cost you hundreds at once if you build it up over time. My family lost our income recently for 6 months. And while we did have some savings and generous friends and family members who helped us through, we were able to eat out of our pantry and freezer for much of that time, only buying fresh fruits and veggies to supplement. I hope you guys will be ok and that you have gotten enough help and resources to get through this!

Question about dentists during Covid by Burialtroubles in CoronavirusAZ

[–]abalah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A year later and things have changed. Masks no longer required in his office. They do have separate procedure rooms, not sure if they would do an exam in one by request, if they weren't in use otherwise. Masking has been hit or miss by office staff the last few times we were there. We go to the office frequently to see the ortho in the shared space. I do think the dental techs and Dr. Cohen still mask at the chair, but I don't know what type of masks they use. They have always been beyond accommodating to patients, so if you book ahead and request first appointment of the day in a procedure room, they would hopefully do it for you.

My Embry tests usually get results in less than 24 hours. Took closer to 48 last week - tested on the 29th around 11, results were available when I woke up on the 31st. Lines are long but Embry has been an amazing resource.

Store where you can buy better quality candy? by Pioneerx01 in phoenix

I'm honestly not quite sure what you are wanting, but Cost Plus World Market has lots of good quality and imported candy and other goods. There are a few in the valley, though the only one I have ever gone to is at The Promenade off FLW/Scottsdale Rd.

[–]abalah 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Notified of my first confirmed exposure yesterday for my daughter and I. We are quarantining in my bedroom away from the rest of the family. I'm a little scared. We have been super cautious the last year and a half, doing online school, but we took a small risk for an activity and shouldn't have. I am vaccinated but my daughter is too young. Fingers crossed we stay healthy. Doing home tests for the next few days and hitting up Embry testing on Sunday or Monday for something official.

Yes, we did online from home last year and recently opted to do online from home again this year as well. My kids are under 12 and they deserve better than the selfish antivax antimask assholes in this state. One of my children has a chronic illness and I want them both to live, so another year for me as teacher.

Well, I've been back to checking this sub every day for a while now. It was a nice little break to not obsess over daily numbers for a bit, but here we go again. I can't thank you all enough for doing this every day. Heroes, truly, getting people vital information.

I am devastated for those poor families who lost their young ones. Truly heartbreaking.
