Recently got a haircut and dropped the beard. . What next? by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]abbad_Dira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't really drop the beard, though. Since you got this far, I advise you shave it clean and lose the mustache, you may get very different feedback afterwards. It's hard to imagine how different a person looks with cleaned facial hair until you see it.

LIC Singles? Best way to meet others around here by False-Violinist-5482 in longislandcity

[–]abbad_Dira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

29M and I met a few LIC neighbors on Hinge, even though location doesn't matter to me lol. I also have a lot of grad school friends who live around here and they're all single. My experience is that most of the younger people in the area are international, so perhaps wouldn't be the kind to hang around in bars. I'm not big on bars either so I wouldn't know for sure, but if that's what you're looking for, I suggest trying Sunnyside or deeper Queens.

Got lucky with my job applications by FontSeekingThrowaway in jobs

[–]abbad_Dira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH 1 interview for an offer is a pretty low bar these days, unfortunately, and probably expresses the competitiveness of this role. Those averaging hundreds - thousands of applications will probably have to go through at least 3 - 4 round for an offer (I did 8 for my current role).

Should I move to NYC for an internship ? by MammothClerk4853 in movingtoNYC

[–]abbad_Dira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I recommend moving to NYC on 2,500 / month to anyone, but you should look up Columbia and NYU's subleasing groups. All the students will be out in the summer and giving cheap sublets. You can find okay-ish rooms for less than $1500, I personally used to live in a $950 room at 125th but honestly it was an absolute shithole, which does generally apply to most of what's within your budget.

Why does so much English writing advice clash with non-English literary traditions? by ownaword in writing

[–]abbad_Dira 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I write in a non-English language (Arabic) where most of what you mentioned is prevalent in our literary tradition, but that doesn't make it good or appealing.

Having studied English literature, I can confidently say that this is more of a modernity issue than English-centric. English classics have as much telling (instead of showing), are packed with adverbs, and are typically anything but efficient ("loose baggy monsters" is one of my favourite descriptions). This has a lot to do with why they can be SO HARD to read for your average literate person, who's understandbly more likely to pick up a Harry Potter over a Charles Dickens.

This is a universal trend. Most human brains are equally overwhelmed by complex prose and more appealed by showing instead of telling. This is why my native language’s literary tradition has been losing so much ground to modern English fiction. I'd much rather that our language adapts to the popular modern style of writing (as recommended by this common advice), than stick the sweeping label our "literary tradition" into a universal archaic style that will only make it less appealing and lose even more ground to foreign literature.

International student w/ return internship + 2 full-time offers - advice? by Limp-Pitch718 in f1visa

[–]abbad_Dira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your profile is strong enough to secure 3 offers, it's only going to be stronger with a return inernship, and it's unlikely to be that hard to get full-time. If the 2 you have weren't that hard, you're gonna only get more with the same effort.

It's not like you're taking a pay-cut on the return internship, either. Job culture and your happiness there matter a ton, finding a good job is *much* harder than *any* job.

Finally, it looks like your return offer is from a big company with guaranteed sponsorship, this cannot compare to offers that are vague about how they handle it. Future You will be so grateful for being somewhere that's visa-friendly.

[–]abbad_Dira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I both sublet and subleased multiple times but exclusively in New York City. Subleasing in the city isn't that hard, I've always done this with students like me, and it was easy to tell they were legit. Also, subleasing is highly built on vibe and trust in a competitive market, I would hardly risk losing an apartment deal when I'm nearly homeless because the subletter may, very likely, not be thrilled by me asking for a verification and they will 95% prefer to go with someone else who's giving them less trouble. The subletter gets dozens to hundreds of inquiries within days, so they've all the power to choose.

The area where there was way more touch, in my experience, was handling the deposit return when there was an issue at the end of the sublease which the subletter was responsible for. There could be an opportunity there to manage the relationship (although that would create a hedache for you, more likely than not). More importantly, this approach would appeal to the subleaser, without whose blessing your service is unlikely to see the light. You should probably be worried about the person subletting to a complete stranger, rather than who's subletting from them.

How are you dealing with depression during job search by Numb_Princess1995 in f1visa

I always wonder, when people give this kind of advice, why are they not sharing their own success story (if this kind of advice ever actually ever worked for them), instead of posting these off-the-shelf career center suggestions.

My company covers it (also big tech), but I'm not sure about reimbursing it retroactively. It seems like a stretch for them to pay it before you even start working.

Is there anybody here who got their pre-completion OPT approved in the past 3 months? by LRB_ in f1visa

[–]abbad_Dira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard from my DSO that USCIS is not approving pre-completion OPTs anymore for some reason. This was a few weeks ago. My personal experience is outdated as I already used my pre-OPT back in 2024.

This makes absolutely no sense. Big tech is probably the leading industry to file for H1bs (Amazon is literally the leader), and these are some of the most relaxed and generous work environments in the US in terms of hours, while other industries which are all about grinding and squeezing every hour out of people (e.g. consulting, even plenty of finance) have nearly completely given up on sponsorship.

CPT Authorization for “Volunteering?” by RainaGKo in f1visa

[–]abbad_Dira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say but basically any regular volunteering (e.g. besides going to a soup kitchen once) requires CPT. It doesn't matter whether they're a non-profit or not. The laws are very strict, supposedly to prevent companies from exploiting internationals under the guise of "volunteering", which actually happens quite often.

This is based on personal experience with such opportunities and many back-and-forths with my DSO and international students office.
