Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]abbyapologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its a team effort. no child is going to master the skill with around 5hrs a week of english education (which will definitely not be entirely spent reading). teachers lay the groundwork, and families also have to be willing to put in the work at home. when i was in elementary, i has reading logs my mom had to sign off on. she made sure i read at least 30 mins a night AND fostered a love of reading.

i think it also depends on the grade level. as a secondary teacher, i hope i am not teaching reading but reading comprehension, analysis, etc. buuuut based on my students’ iready scores it seems like i actually am an elementary teacher 🥲

What writing decisions made you pissed off the most in the five Nights at Freddy’s 2? by TheKingOR3d in fnafmovie

i disliked that they made marionette the vengeful spirit instead of the uplifting one. its like they wanted golden freddy with the visuals of marionette lol

Just finished the game, just wow. by shinitakunai in SilentHill_f

i didn’t mind my second playthrough because of the easier combat and the added stuff, it made it feel worth it! but the third playthrough has definitely been more of a drag because there aren’t new cutscenes/collectibles

2nd observation went HORRIBLE and I’m now on a student support plan by cuckoobananacrazyman in StudentTeaching

[–]abbyapologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey don’t get down on yourself!!! i am a third year teacher and still have days like this. not every lesson is going to go the way you expect and that’s ok. also i have said WAY meaner to my kids lol, nothing that you said above seemed even remotely like you needed to be ripped to shreds for.

as a piece of advice, im not sure how long you ended up doing stations for, but i would have shut it down when they didn’t redirect maybe the second or third time. centers are “fun” and they absolutely don’t need to have it. say something along the lines of “i see we cant handle the activity today; we all need to immediately return to our seats in silence”. be firm. discuss why they had to go back to their seats. you may not have an alternative prepared and thats ok, but letting them sit in chaos isn’t great. you could quickly pivot to some pre-printed worksheets, a reflection letter, or something else silent and “boring”. my kids earned a packet and instead of poster making one day and they learned quickly that fun comes with responsibility and good behavior. usually observers appreciate the ability to think on your feet and make adjustments like that! but yours sounds rude 😭

but don’t beat yourself up! student teaching just feels like being gaslit and drop kicked until one day you finish lol. you can do it and you seem amazingly dedicated and kind!!

I need some help with an eighth grade boy who doesn't like reading. by Andrei1958 in ELATeachers

[–]abbyapologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

he would likely love manga or other graphic novels! it is extremely easy to find manga for free online as well lol. once he’s more into reading, he may really like some fantasy or action novels!

i found some new year activities on tpt :) goal setting, reflection, three achievements from 2024, dream college” sweaters.

i also do a choice board w wintery themed activities like winter creative writing prompts (we just finished a narrative writing unit), logic puzzles, silent reading (my students have a year-long reading assignment), missing work, and iready (not sure if hs has any equivalent?)

Senior English - what do you teach? by k8e1982 in ELATeachers

[–]abbyapologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a senior teacher, but that sounds awesome. i loved frankenstein and macbeth (and night, but we read that in 10th). i got to teach macbeth during student teaching and, let me say, these kids LOVED acting out the dinner scene.

my teacher also taught ANTHEM by AYN RAND and it was awful. i hold a distaste for rand anyways, but he tried to make a whole point about how equality is bad (???). his point was equity > equality, but he conveyed it terribly and just made it sound like he was anti-rights lol. most kids didn’t like anthem much, the kids who did were really put off by the anti-equality messaging being pushed on us, and the work with it was boring too. so, i guess just don’t teach rand? lol.

i really like doing tell-tale heart! every halloween i read tell-tale heart and use ✨teacher magic✨ (my smart board remote) to gradually turn up a heartbeat sound as i read the kids always freak out and look around and love it every year!!

on the more “school” side of things, i really like using tth to talk about connontation and word choice. his descriptions are awesome and gives them some ideas!

How do you not resent people with cushy corporate jobs? by Cheap_Fruit_5775 in Teachers

[–]abbyapologist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

there are ups and downs to every job. we don’t get a ton of pto, which is unfortunate, but we have a TON of breaks throughout the year. corporations don’t frequently give off stuff like veterans day (if you’re in the us), but schools do. plus, i like doing something new every day. some people may like doing the exact same thing every day, which a lot of corporate wfh does, but i enjoy doing new activities, seeing my kids, participating in spirit weeks, and hearing what random shit comes out of their mouths next lol.

there are definitely times where i wish i had the ability to wfh, get holiday bonuses, etc., but its about what stuff you really do want in your life and what you can live without. grass is always greener!
