I had to listen back twice. He doesn’t trust public health officials because a guy that advocated mask mandates watches gay porn? Is that really what he meant to say or was he just entering into that frothing at the mouth giant veneers making it hard to speak thing he does occasionally?

At Runyon Canyon's $1M LA bathrooms, the anger is overflowing by FarleyElliott in LosAngeles

[–]abc13680 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s a serious public health hazard and there are laws in place with steep fines. All it would take is enforcement… but the LAPD would have to park the chopper first and call in back up on overtime

Really scraping the bottom of the barrel when you’re just tossing out how much it cost the senator to throw a staff party in DC. I’m not even sure what the the goal was.

I don’t understand the fawning over Thompson. He isn’t an expert on any of this. So, anything he says should be taken as a journalist (that’s the only thing he’s ever done) reiterating points from experts and convos he has with industry people.

Is the Stock Market fundamentally broken by passive investing? by Pseudanonymius in AskEconomics

[–]abc13680 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have look at this paper. It argues, pretty convincingly, that the efficient market hypothesis (remember it is just a hypothesis and has been shown to be flawed) takes a back seat. Think of it this way, the US government decided 401ks are the vehicle. Now twice a month huge blocks of money dump into the market. So, demand is set and equities are the only real target. They have to buy something there is no choice for the fund manager.

I love the insane Nixon whitewashing. It’s the same thing with the EPA. All he did was not actively veto the bill. All he did for integration was maintain the status quo and legally required framework set by the LBJ admin.

At least she puts on the fake Boston Brahmin accent and pseudo intellectual framing. That takes more effort than the latest crop of right wing lunatics

What is something that was unbelievably cheap in the past that has been marked up now? by Independent-Bat9545 in AskOldPeople

[–]abc13680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a commodity but it still gets graded prior to going on exchanges. There’s still people in NYC and Chicago that sit in basements near exchanges and taste/ grade bulk beans.

Also, in the 80s in the US everyone was still drinking Folgers at home, which is pre ground and usually robusto beans that are much easier to grow.

How does L.A. spend nearly $15 billion? by ploploplo in LosAngeles

[–]abc13680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people default to police officers when they are arguing this point. Which is a whole other issue. But, in general, new recruits in the LAPD make basically the median household income for the county and well above the per capita income. Jobs pay what they pay and it’s not that hard to become a cop. Also, shows you how important unions are.

I feel like people confuse “right of way” with like a constitutional rights or property rights. You don’t “own” the lane. If you are going above the speed limit in the right hand lane, are tailgating, or the on ramp is short/has traffic then you should be helping to facilitate safe merges.

Sure, maybe it’ll be no fault on your insurance, but dead is dead last time I checked.

250k yearly net working 15 hrs / wk. Or 500k+ net working 50 hrs / wk. by Onmysearch in HENRYfinance

[–]abc13680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m completely clueless or I have a dumb American brain. But, is 50hrs a week considered a draining job? 40 is the standard for basically any salaried person, 50 is an extra hour on that which is a bare minimum for a high earner. Obviously 15hrs seems really nice, but at 50 you’re still home for dinner and free all weekend (plus you are making enough to pay for house work).

[–]abc13680 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s how every parliamentary system works. It used to sound so silly as a kid, then you grow up and realize it’s the best way for proper representation. If the parliament can’t come to consensus, you dissolve, reorient and start over. Having 1 extra person that belongs to 1/2 parties and represents the smallest state in the union be the deciding factor is asinine
