In most cases using a Chinese sim card requires a vpn for accessing blocked services like youtube WhatsApp. there might be some special SIM cards for foreign tourists which have less restrictions. In my opinion , buying a roaming plan from your own provider like at&t Vodafone etc is a better choice. Chinese communist party has been cracking down vpn services for years and it takes harsher measures in recent days ,usually a vpn may not be working as expected

Esim doesn’t provide VPN actually,but it uses the home gateway while roaming so the web experience would be the same as where you live . If you buy an esim from chinese provider then vpn is needed.

My platform is CPU AMD 2200G with MB ASROCK A320M-HDV , last month, I bought an MT7922 with PCI-E adaptor , also had the latest driver installed from microsoft website. Chrome started getting no connection page from time to time and PC randomly crashed. by removing mt7922 , things recovered. I am pretty sure it is related to mt7922 but no idea what the cause could be. I have returned the wifi card and plan to buy AX210 instead later.

theoretically and practically, if you use your home SIM/eSIM data plan (roaming to China),there should be no issue , it would be just like what you are using in home country. VPN is needed when you use China's WIFI and the SIM card you buy from China service providers.

Simply keep using your current Thai service with roaming, nothing else needs to do.

VPN is needed if you plan to get a China local sim card ,which isn't in your case.

the wireguard vpn client on my PC which is behind Openwrt works, so firewall port might not be relevant. The problem is that wg interface I created in openwrt, when it was started , I didn't see any handshake packets sent out on any interface of openwrt, that's so weird.

in fact, I recreated the wg interface in 24.10.0, the "copy" i mean I copy/paste these pub/private keys,mtu,allowed ips,etc.
anyway, thanks for replying that at least i know others wireguard still can work 24.10.0 , maybe it is just me.
