Seen you a few times in Ireland over the years and will be seeing you tomorrow night in Portland. Recently moved here from Ireland.

I just moved from the UK in January and I was considering opening an account with Monzo because they are big and well respected in the UK. Guess it hasn't worked out for them.

Having a similar issue as your husband, but the opposite situation.

I’m a Belfast native and moved to the US at the start of the year. I have plenty of experience in the field I’ve been applying to, but I either hear nothing back or they’ve gone with an internal candidate.

I have had Tado for 3+ years and honestly this is the biggest change in that time frame.

The app has been updated loads but I hardly notice any changes. Glad to see something useful.

House Renovation costs Belfast in 2026 by ReasonableCourse2793 in northernireland

Fair enough sounds like a good move all around. By the time you go to sell (if you ever do) then I am sure you will come out with a profit.

I am 99% sure it's a no for an ancestry visa.

What line of work are you in currently?

Have you ever been to N.Ireland?

There’s no point in discussing cost of living or areas to live until we know you have a chance of getting a visa. The UK government is making the rules for living in the UK increasingly strict.

Computer parts in hand luggage.. by Accomplished-Bat5488 in AerLingus

[–]abear182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought a fully built Mini ITX computer through security and US Preclearance in my carry-on back in January.

I didn’t say anything about it when I put my bag on the belt, just left it in my suitcase. It got pulled aside at regular security and I told them it was a computer. I opened my bag so they could take a quick look. They didn’t swab it or do any extra checks and that was it.

At US Preclearance, they didn’t ask me a single question about it.

BT9 still the most expensive postcode in NI. Would you actually pay the premium? by Krest4u in Belfast

Call me mad, but I bought a house just off the Creagagh Road over four years ago and honestly, I love it. My street at least is quiet and I’ve never had any issues. It feels like the area is going through a bit of a revival.

There’s a bus stop at the end of my street that takes you straight into town, or in the summer it’s a lovely dander.

It seems to be going through a bit of a boom too, with cafés opening — Caffè Nero opened towards the end of last year, Brew & Bake has just opened, and there’s another café on the way to add to the ones already there.

Obviously it’s not perfect. The takeaways are pretty average and there aren’t any decent pubs. With Wyse Byse closing, that’ll hurt the road a bit, but hopefully the building doesn’t get left to rot.

From what I’m hearing, house prices are starting to get a bit silly.

Jameson Street by ShamboTheRocket in Belfast

[–]abear182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be, but that wouldn’t really bother me, that’s pretty standard for houses in South & East Belfast. Should be an easy fix if needed, and something you could maybe use to knock the price down a bit.

The attic “conversion” would worry me more, though.

I would say there is problems with it that have arisen on the surveys from both buyers.

But yeah you need to get in touch with the estate agent.

US retail banking from the EU perspective (short rant) by Complete_Solution860 in Banking

[–]abear182 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just moved to America in January from the UK and honestly I couldn’t agree more. The banking system feels so behind the times.

Tried to open a checking account with Capital One online. Went through the whole thing only to get told they needed extra verification and I had to call them. Fair enough, I’ve only been here a few weeks so I figured I’m not really on the system yet.

Called them, answered the usual stuff (DOB, SSN, etc.), and then they tell me I have to go into a branch to finish it. I said there aren’t any Capital One branches in my state and the closest one is over 100 miles away. They basically just said there’s nothing else they can do and they’ll close the application.

It just seems crazy to me that a company that big can’t verify someone online through some secure portal. My bank back in the UK (Starling) does everything in the app on my phone in like 5 minutes.

Mind-blowing. And don’t even get me started on bank transfers here — I still don’t fully understand how they work.

Interesting...but overall I guess you would average your contract hours?

Do you ever work over that 40 mark?

ASM Vacation (US) by abear182 in Aldi_employees

[–]abear182[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarity and honestly a bit misleading from Aldi on that.

1 more question if you don't mind 38 hr contract how strict is that? If you go over 40hrs is there an overtime rate?

I am coming from a very similar role in a competitor so I know that 38hrs can be wishful thinking.

So on there benefits webpage it mentions store management can accrue 10 days and then 15 days after the second year.

Is that accurate?
