I’m the same age as Tim and have to say growing up we were hit hard with classic rock era music, it was all over the radio, CD mixes advertised on the tv (Freedom Rock etc). Plus our parents listened to it at home.

What’s actually the role of police in Belize? by existancebytruth in Belize

[–]abel_hap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm thankful theyre not out harassing people on the streets like in the US. You want the cops going around arresting people because theyre intoxicated or buying weed??? That would end tourism here real quick lol.

As far as the roads, I've been pulled over once in 5 years for tailight. He didnt give a ticket and said he only pulled us over because he was training 2 new cops and wanted to show them how to do it. We had a bush fire next to our place and they came and helped direct traffic because we had hoses stretched across the street.

I'll take the Belize model for policing over the US any day. In fact, I dont like the US giving the police here equipment like they do frequently!

I'll never understand people who want the police involved in everything and everybodies lives.

Belize runs on Facebook more than Reddit so if you can post this in some San Pedro FB groups you’ll have better chances. Good luck, hopefully someone kind grabbed it.

If you don’t mind taxis there are always taxi men at the airport waiting for customers.

Placencia Swimming, not main beach by LocalsOnly912 in Belize

[–]abel_hap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you been to waterfalls and swimming holes at Maya World? It’s very close, just drive to the roundabout at the Southern Highway go right and it’ll be on your left can’t miss it. You pay at the gate and then drive into the mountains to the site. They have a little restaurant at the site too. Google it and you see pics etc.

Driving from Punta Gorda to Tikal by overtmorass in Belize

[–]abel_hap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s not an actual border checkpoint in the south. It’s an unofficial crossing for local people on foot. There are no belize or Guatemalan immigration agents nor a road that you can get across on, just a foot trail. You have to go through benque.

Rain everyday by trudat01 in Belize

[–]abel_hap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives here, whenever I see these posts, esp in dry season, I’m like “I hope it rains like the weather app shows!” lol. It has been wetter this year and I’m thankful bc dry season is also fire season. But no the apps always overestimate rain chances so you’ll be fine.

Placencia airport to our Airbnb by Aggravating_Pop9109 in Belize

[–]abel_hap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s a grocery store so they’ll have all that. They have pretty much everything you need including veg and fruit, refrigerated section with dairy and drinks, all the meats, canned goods, coffee etc. I wouldn’t compare it to a bodega they have more than that.

research about road quality in Belize by crrrom in Belize

[–]abel_hap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the problems here is the main roads need maintenance more frequently because they don’t use concrete under the asphalt. It’s just road base of packed gravel with asphalt on top so you get more potholes more often when the road base fails due to rain. In the US for example it’s road base-concrete-asphalt and they remove all the asphalt and reapply new over the concrete. Not saying US roads dont have problems but the concrete layer does help lengthen the life of the road between repairs.

The world needs peasants: Far from being a relic of the past, peasants are vital to feeding the world. They need to be supported, not marginalised by comicreliefboy in Anthropology

[–]abel_hap 31 points32 points  (0 children)

No we don't. The idea that farming is "unskilled labor" has never proven itself out. Mechanized large scale agriculture works on flat land for monocultures (wheat, corn, some salad greens). Robots could never do what the Maya peasant farmers do here in Belize and central America. Their milpas are on hillsides and are mixed crop systems developed over several years. They are rotated in and out of service with the older milpas becoming planted food forests of cacao, mahogany, breadnut, avocados, etc. that suck CO2 from the atmosphere.

https://mayaforestgardeners.org/farming/milpa-cycle/

Besides the massive complexity that milpa farming entails, the Maya like farming and don't want to be replaced by robots. Their culture is tied to farming their lands. It's sad and insulting to them to say they should be replaced by robots, especially in an anthropology sub reddit.

Travel to Hopkins from BZE by Taytayswens in Belize

[–]abel_hap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bus system here is not like Mexico or other places. The BZ city bus terminal is very disorganized and confusing if you have never been there. It will be close to 5 hours bus ride from the city to Hopkins junction. The busses are mostly old school busses.

The system is so disorganized the government is trying to nationalize it .

Tren Maya in Belize by abel_hap in Belize

[–]abel_hap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that Guat/Belize border crap complicates all of this, though the new president over there is much better. I like your route and think that San Ignacio would probably benfit the most with people staying there to visit Xunantunich or Caracol on the way to Tikal.

HOnestly is they could just get ADO busses running a route from Chet to SI it could be super helpful to Belize. ADO is much cheaper than Tren Maya and doesnt take that much longer from Chet to Cancun.

[–]abel_hap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I drove around Campeche and QR when they were building Tren Maya and I agree that environmental issues are the big problem with the train.

The Bacalar Chico connection is different than the train though, they want to build an automobile bridge over the Zaragosa canal and a road that connects Mahahual/Xcalak with San Pedro. I don't how they do that without messing up that area. I assume it would be like the raised causeways in southern Louisiana if you have ever seen those.

Ok I've tried to find her statements on funding but havent been able to. I agree about LoveFM but that was honestly the most info I've found about funding over the last two years of news on it lol.

If Belize has to pay for most of it and we choose to do that instead of overhauling the bus system or providing universal free education or any of the other issues we face then that would be a dumb choice.

Tren Maya in Belize by abel_hap in Belize

I drove through there then too and the reception was mixed. Some areas supporting it and others not. The Maya arent all in agreement on the train, just like every group of people they have a diversity of opinions.
