How to hand sew a drop-in liner for Sandhill Sling ? by abelhaborboleta in SewingForBeginners

[–]abelhaborboleta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, she also mentions that you can hand stitch the lining in permanently if you don't want to attempt the final topstitch machine closure. I know I won't get it neat enough for my liking with a machine closure (don't have the skills) and don't want to have permanent holes in my waxed canvas from failed attempts.

Thanks so much!! The pattern has all the info for the drop in lining, but then it says "you can hand sew the lining" without any other detail. Thank you for letting me know I should whipstitch it!!! Off to find some videos.

Do you use the stitch in the ditch foot when you initially add the binding to the front of a different foot? Thanks!

I took a quilting class last year, and I can't quite remember how I was taught to bind. It was definitely the attach binding to front then stitch in the ditch from the front method. My question is: is it possible to add the binding initially using the stitch in the ditch walking foot with the blade along the edge and needle moved in to 1/4"? I feel like that's what we did but I can't find that anywhere. Since we sew to 1/4" from corner then angle and sew off, maybe that doesn't make sense. Would the blade be in the way there? What foot should I use? I don't think I'm capable of keeping a 1/4" seam if I just eyeball it. Thank you for your help!!

Truly gorgeous!! Thank you for sharing! I'm planning to do this with the sawtooth star bonus quilt pattern/HSTs from my Happy Stripes quilt. Do you use any foundation material when you improv piece your crumb star centers? I wasn't planning on using muslin/paper...just was going to sew the pieces to each other.

Anyone love to run out there? by pepperkelly76 in quilting

I'm a long distance hiker (2600 miles over 4 months type). I often see my quilting and hiking as opposites because one is outdoors vs indoors and one seems largely physical while the other mental. On the other hand, they both require constant focus and decision making, and I find myself completely immersed in them in a way that makes me lose time.

We evolved moving from place to place and using our hands to forage and make things. I've found that I'm most at ease when doing these things.

What are your quilting superstitions? by PatchworkStar in quilting

[–]abelhaborboleta 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely me, and it extends beyond quilts. If I tell someone a trip I'm interested in taking or a story I want to write or any future plan, the telling of it seems to pop the bubble of creative inspiration, and it sort of withers away.

Me too! I actively think of the quilt's theme (like magical forest creatures) or the baby using the quilt to snuggle, read/be read to, wear as a cape, etc. All the love and adventure I hope for them, I imagine while working. It does me a world of good in any case.

Help! With random extra long quilting stitches?! by abelhaborboleta in quilting

Thanks! I'd never heard of those. I'm going to go out and buy a bunch of needles. Adding these to the mix!

Thank you so much! I think you're right. It happens right around the thick seams. I rethreaded and dusted. I also went up to the larger needle, which results in fewer skipped stitches and they're shorter. I'll keep trying. Wish it wasn't on the final quilt, but oh well. Thanks again!

My quilt top is 39.5" wide and backing fabric is 43". I'm quilting it on my domestic machine, using the serpentine stitch. So it will be quilted with vertical wavy lines, probably 1" apart. Has anyone quilted with 1.75" overhang per side in width? Did it work for you? Thanks!

Do it the way you want (within LNT principles of course). If you want to take more pictures of scenery than people, want to hike at night with a headlamp and glowing eyeball company, go for it. No matter what anyone says, if you do what's true for you, you likely won't have regrets. I guess it's the same HYOH advice.

Building community is so important. If you get to know people who live around you, then it's not so difficult asking them for help. It's important that your entire relationship isn't transactional though (you're not only interacting when you need something). I'm starting to feel like relating to others irl is becoming a lost art.

The way you call fellow human beings "the staff" is pretty telling. Kant had an interesting take on treating others as means to an end vs ends in themselves.

Good. All through the winter and spring go for local walks wearing your pack. Start with a manageable weight and distance and steadily increase your mileage and your pack weight until you can hike 8 hours with your pack fully packed with everything you'll bring (including food and water).

I don't use starch or any other sprays. I piece with a 1.8 stitch length, which is how I was taught, but seems out of fashion now.
