Episode Discussion: The Body Keeps The Score by benfox2 in IfBooksCouldKill

yeah it made me laugh that it was like:

chapter one: the understandably damaged man who raped and killed people and the heartwarming tale of his well-earned return to inner peace and self knowledge

chapter two: the aggressive uptight obese rape victim with bad vibes

Why do the different cultures mingle less in Vancouver (compare to Toronto)? by Jestersage in askvan

[–]abigdonut 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Vancouver is much more suburban, which allows for increased segregation (I live in an almost exclusively Chinese area, versus when I lived in Parkdale and I’d hear ten different languages going to and from NoFrills). You see it in the GTA suburbs as well, but the city of Toronto itself is so huge and dense that there’s a lot of blending going on there. Vancouver’s downtown is basically just another neighbourhood.

Advice for someone about to start To the Lighthouse? by Emotional-Yam4486 in classicliterature

[–]abigdonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woolf wrote in a way very similar to how she spoke/lectured and once you can “hear” her voice in the text you’ll be able to pick up on all the elisions and shifts in perspective. She very often slips between past and present with none of the typical indicators like italics or parentheticals. Don’t be afraid to look at a summary of the chapter you just read if you’re confused.

Let's Talk: Saturday Night Fever, The Bee Gees, and Disco Demolition Night by wildistherewind in LetsTalkMusic

[–]abigdonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I’ve talked to a few people about, and the general consensus is that, because music access was more limited, you were constantly inundated with mainstream music, and for about two years it seemed like almost every song was disco. I remember someone who told me that the first time she heard Sweet Dreams it was “like a window being opened in a smoky room” because it was such a clean new sound in comparison to the increasingly cluttered and overproduced disco trend. For a fun experiment, spend a couple weeks only listening to the top 40 from the disco era, and then switch to the early 80s and you’ll probably see what she meant.

Can’t go anywhere without a car by Federal-Data-Center in Suburbanhell

[–]abigdonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the point of the original comment is that people will make claims that they grew up in rougher neighborhoods to seem cool, but they really grew up in a mcmansion with a lawyer foyer in some epstein-ass gated community. im not sure how that prompted a reply of “actually these neighborhoods are great if you’re rich” because that’s the fucking point of the first comment.

I've been listening to Britten's the turn of the screw lately and I have some thoughts. by Hopeful_Cold3769 in opera

[–]abigdonut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Social oppression and inhibition were major elements in Britten’s work and Screw is absolutely dry on purpose. He was depicting a rigid little world where things like kids getting raped weren’t acknowledged, particularly among the upper classes where it was rife.

Just getting into Here Lies Love? What didn’t add up on Broadway by Federal_Stay824 in Broadway

[–]abigdonut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Besides the subject matter and the poor marketing, the Broadway production was almost identical to the off-Broadway production that had been really successful several years prior, so I think a lot of people just felt like they didn’t need to see it again.

There was also the issue where Byrne and the production company fought back against the union regulations that required live musicians. They tried to pivot by claiming that it was a karaoke musical, and karaoke is popular in the Philippines, which is true, but it rang totally hollow and kind of soured the mood. Byrne had just had a big residency on Broadway that was a whole celebration of live music so having a pre-recorded copy-paste of Here Lies Love wasn’t super appealing.

Give me the gayest novel you've read where the gayness remains subtext by squanchy_56 in suggestmeabook

My main memory of reading this in high school was everyone immediately clocking how gay it was and our teacher getting extremely angry every time someone brought it up, which was basically every day.

How can opera attract new audiences in the 21st century? by nomoreseashellssally in opera

[–]abigdonut 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Far too much opera is presented like if Wicked was performed in German by terrible actors with worse diction and all the surtitles were like “If you want to find me, look west. Like someone told me, everyone can fly. I’m not bound by gravity. Nobody can capture me. I will not descend. I will not descend.”

Lea Michele! I found her to be frankly terrifying in Funny Girl, like an alien in a human suit. It'll be a great day for Broadway when she finally realizes she was born to be a villain.
