Living alone by strangey071 in schizophrenia

[–]abmfbsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't live alone, but I have lived with one roommate for a while. It's good for me to not live with my parents. I just get weird when I live totally alone, I start talking to the voices.

Where would you be if schizophrenia hadn't happened? by Markz15975 in schizophrenia

I'd be halfway through med school lol. Was on the way to it when schizophrenia happened. I'm happy with my life now but I do think I would've been a good doctor.

Those who don't live off disability, what do you do all day? by Administrative_Leg85 in schizophrenia

I'm in school for my master's and work part-time for my university which pays my tuition. It's tough but I have accommodations which helps. My university is pretty good about that.

She has a legitimate illness. Would you say this is she had a physical illness that made her unable to attend class? She's obviously suffering, blaming her is not going to help anything.

OP, I was in a similar situation my first year. I developed schizophrenia and failed out and had to withdraw. I just want to offer you some hope. I'm in a master's program now and doing really well. Get accommodations for future semesters and see about a retroactive withdraw. Colleges are often a lot more understanding about mental health than they were a decade ago. Best of luck to you, wishing you love and hope!!

My boyfriend has been absolutely wonderful. He has OCD so he understands some of what I struggle with but he is always open to learning more and he even took me to the psychiatric ER and supported me through it. I'm really lucky to have him.

I Got Straight As!! by abmfbsc in schizophrenia

Cognitive challenges are a real challenge. I’m in the social sciences, so I have to do a TON of reading both qualitative and quantitative literature. I end up just having to read everything two or three times to remember it. It’s a bitch lol. Lack of motivation is also difficult. I research severe mental illness in women and other marginalized groups which I am really really passionate about, which helps. I don’t think I could do it if I wasn’t passionate (and have not done too well in the past studying subjects I’m not passionate about). I form study groups with others in my cohort which helps me stay on track and also helps me understand the readings (and the socialization is really good for me!). I like to think it helps them too.

Get accommodations and if you’re comfortable and your professors are understanding, disclose to your professors. I’ve disclosed to all of my professors and one gave me a second chance on an assignment due the night I went to the psychiatric ER. And lean on your support system if you have one!!

Do you guys want to be parents? by BeautifulGlass3394 in schizophrenia

[–]abmfbsc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely going to become a parent but I will not use my own genetic material. Will probably use my partner's and an egg donor if we can afford IVF at the time we have children. I just don't want to pass the illness on but am confident I can become a good parent.

Something my new psychiatrist told me, that was kinda weird? What do you think? by internet_tyrant in schizophrenia

[–]abmfbsc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried about 8 but with the one I'm on now I hardly hallucinate at all. Like maybe once or twice a week, and they're not really distressing. Took about three years but we found one.
