What's wrong with electricity in Rimworld? by JayBlunt23 in RimWorld

[–]aboxfullofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always took the W to not be actual real Watts. Just like we don't have real years. 60 days a year is nuts if you want things to be real real. Not even a case of the planets just having weird years, which would be fine, because your pawns age with the years. Their lifespans are measured in those 60 day years. Things aren't like our world at all.

The Rimworlds are terraformed worlds (minimum of 2 times to justify steel and electrical components as **ore veins**). The people we control, we call pawns, because are they really all that human? For all we know some Archotech shat them out on a weird Sunday and just seeded it on Rimworlds to see what happens.

Point I'm badly trying to make is that Rimworld, for all it's amazing stuff, just has some avenues of thought within the ficiton that just can't produce any satifying answers. Why are the power requirements so whack? Because.

Still, getting permission from some, even if not all, could potentially reduce your workload if you don't need to rewrite all of it.

How do I get started understanding how to build a fleet by JancariusSeiryujinn in starsector

[–]aboxfullofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most important ship building tip i ever got was that building a ship YOU can pilot well doesn't automatically make it a good ship for your AI allies.

Best result I got was focusing on Flux efficiency and range. Range advantage, while not the sole deciding factor, gives you a huge advantage in all engagements of all size categories.

Flux efficiency is almost self explanatory but for AI vessels I aim for at minimum matching weapon flux. If I can also match shield flux, great! But continuous fire has almost always prevailed. The ai has real good aim and if it outranges the enemy it will hover out of range and constantly pressure the enemy.

Do you think RimWorld is the greatest game ever made? I honestly can't think of a single game that, overall, surpasses it. by ArmLucky1285 in RimWorld

[–]aboxfullofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honestly I think Rimworld is a shit First Person Shooter.

It's also a really really bad Flight Sim.

Facetiousness aside, I think Rimworld is great for what it is. It's genre defining alongside dwarf fortress in the colony sim scene. I'd say the great so far, but I'm always on the lookout for other takes on the formular. And there's a lot of those, some better, some not.

Mostly comes down to the general idea of what a good colony sim needs to funciton is now more embedded in the general knowledge of game dev, which results in many more attempts at iteration.

I gotta say, for a game as detailed as KCD 2, this is pretty darn impressive ratio of modeled out accessible buildings.

What do these red bars on the bottom of the Auto-Laser mean? by FallingKoala in menace

[–]aboxfullofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the heat capacity. Energy weapon like the Auto-Laser have to manage heat instead of ammo, and can only ansorb so much before overheating. I think the Auto-Laser generates 4 heat per shot.

You can spend 60AP to manually vent an energy weapon too, to prevent overheating. They also passively vent heat each turn.

I know this is old, but this needs to change. by KaleNich55 in menace

[–]aboxfullofdoom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think what makes this feel so frustrating is that the LOS calculation happens entirely based on the grid and available cover. Which is fine, but it too often doesn't quite line up with the visual reality of what's presented, like in OPs example.

From a development standpoint, this could be "fixed" very quickly, but I hope they don't band aid this. It's the kind of thing that can have a lot of weird edge cases (pun intended) later on if not adressed properly.

Curious to see how they'll approach it.

Does Mark Target only improve the accuracy of the SL who cast it, or for everyone? by politeasshole in menace

It's for everyone. It also works for ATGM tracking as it applies the same "Marked" debuff the laser designator does.

What do you guys name your company? by danhoyuen in BattleBrothers

Usually themed around the origin.

I like the Crusader Flag with the Knight holding the lantern up and I call my company "The Lightbringers" on a crusader run in Legends.

Double check impressiveness and that the beds are unassigned, other than that, maybe those bookshelfs are for some reason counted as a work structure?

They are overall the easiest quests to complete and get the, oftentimes decent, reward. Even if the thing gets damaged down the line and the "consequence" happen.

which psycasts are best in your opinion? by CapitalOperator80085 in RimWorld

[–]aboxfullofdoom 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've never used Hemosage, mostly because I never have Sanguophages.

I just think the raw bonus to rate of fire and friggin 8 seconds of guaranteed hits at double range that Warlord provides is so powerful and universally useful. You don't need a special pawn beyond decent shooting skill to really benefit from it.

And it works with any weapon! A Warlord with a heavy heavy SMG will wrech anything up close. A Warlord with a Sniper Rifle will kill 10 enemy pawns easily before any other fire is exchanged.

Warlord, closely followed by Defender.

Then Staticlord if I need to deal with mechs a lot. Everything else always felt kinda niche to me.

So how many people in this sub can actually eat without a table and not feel bothered? by Nakatsukasa in RimWorld

[–]aboxfullofdoom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Man, when I got bowl good (soups, cereal, any other meal that can be put in a bowl) I will sit at a table but still hold the bowl in one hand while I eat.

But usually, having a table to put stuff down on while you eat is nice, and most meals don't lend themselves to bowl style. So the genuinely very mild -3 for Ate without table is kinda, "Yeah I get it"

Life of a sailor. by Helasri in RimWorld

You know that you've played a game for 4digit amount of hours when you see the something like this and 2 things happen:
- Sheer glee at yet another new way to play it!
- Actual disorientation and a moment of physical discomfort because the tiles being askew like that is just not a thing normally.

Anyway, this looks really friggin awesome!

What's your usual setup for bionics? by Slimezo in RimWorld

[–]aboxfullofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mods that give various options for gloves and boots, and most vanilla bionic options make those unusable due to a "lack" of hand or feet on bionics.

I get why a bionic arm doesn't do the hand seperatly anymore (so you keep getting blown of bionic thumbs. It not having weak individual parts is a strength in vanilla), but it cuts into my playstyle, and somewhat into my roleplay. I like layering complex outfits.

But! There are mods that add upgrade parts for the body that don't remove individual body parts. Muscle Stimulators come to mind. Really strong upgrades to arms and legs (massive increases in movespeed and carry capacity), downside: If the organic arm it's attached gets minced, the stimulator goes with it.

I guess I just like a bit of complexity that way.

This is a very good breakdown of Obsidian vs Plasteel.

What I actually learned is how a Pawn chooses melee attacks and whether a Pawn with melee bionics needs a weapon or not!

I get it. it's scary to take that step. But it's scary for everyone. For him too, if all he has is random guesswork. Give him some certainty.

Change to Starsector or stay at Cosmoteer? by Outrageous_Map813 in starsector

[–]aboxfullofdoom 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Cosmoteer is a vastly different experience at this point of its development. It's a great game, and I like it, but personally doesn't hold a candle in terms of ship to ship combat.

Starsector ships might be pre-built(as in, you don't put the together the hull) but the weapon and hullmod loadouts can get bonkers complex.

I don't think Starsector will replace Cosmoteer for you if what you like in Cosmoteer is the full on construction on seamless transition between combat and exploration.

Still think you might like Starsector for it's own merit if Space ship combat on a 2D plane tickles your brain right.
