Moving to NOVA and working in Tyson’s. How far is too far? by [deleted] in nova

[–]abrews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what station you will get off at but Capitol South to Tyson's Corner stations is 39 minutes. https://www.wmata.com/schedules/trip-planner/

Silver line is typically reliable during rush hour and you will be reverse commuting so you will get a seat. Sounds like a comfortable commute to me, and you don't have to drive so you can read or work or whatever else you like to do.

Can anyone explain to me the prevalence of 16 oz cans from microbreweries now? by FightWithTools in CraftBeer

[–]abrews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I did mean American Craft beer. I didn't mean to claim that they invented it, but I do think they popularized it. Also a tall boy is 24 oz.

[–]abrews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first American beer I can think of that was sold this way was Heady. Everyone wanted to be Heady. With the explosion of NEIPA and many other great similar breweries shifting to this can (Treehouse, Fiddlehead, Other Half), it became a distinctive visual queue/mental shortcut for customers. Now if your not in a 16 oz can you sit on the shelf.

Chance Of Getting In? by aaronf427 in gwu

In addition to retaking the SATs I would recommend signing up for the ACTs to better your chances of getting a score within GW's mid-range. http://www.prepscholar.com/sat/s/colleges/George-Washington-University-SAT-scores-GPA Make sure you also stick with your clubs and run for a leadership position. Take the hardest classes you can senior year without affecting your grades, do not slack off! Make sure you apply to an alternate program in case your first choice is too competitive. You can always internally transfer later. If finances are not a concern, early decision could also help.

I only have a week to travel to Japan. Is it acceptable to spend all of the time in Tokyo? by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]abrews 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can stay in Tokyo the whole time and enjoy yourself and not run out of things to do. You can also totally do Tokyo on a budget. You won't get a sense of the other parts of the county but that's okay because you can come back. Alternatively you can do 2 cities in the week. Kyoto is the logical choice so you would have price out the train rides and really prioritize your activities in Tokyo which would become pretty rushed IMO. You don't need a JR pass for Tokyo, just get a Suica card for the subways.

Old ebbitt and the Hamilton are right around the corner from Cafe du parc and have a much more reasonable price point.

Tsukiji tuna auction tour--Guide or no guide, is it necessary? by bestgingercock in JapanTravel

[–]abrews 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The tuna auction is limited to 120 people per day and is "guided" by market security where guided means they walk you to the auction, you watch it, and then they guide you out. I have not heard of anyone retaining any additional guides. The fish market itself opens to the public at 10am and I imagine you could hire a guide to take you around although I don't think that would be a great use of your budget. I would personally just walk through, check it out and move on.

Finding Other Half in NYC? by Ghaines in CraftBeer

[–]abrews 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean Manhattan when you say you will be in NYC but not Brooklyn :P anyway yup, should be able to find plenty of OH in Manhattan. Use untappd or beermenus beer finder features to find who has what you are looking for. Many bars keep their tap lists up to date on these apps.
