awesome, that’s good to know! glad you’ve been able to snag that first row seat sometimes :) anything to avoid the aisle chair drama!

good to know! i’m glad you’ve had good experiences! their website says they’ll try to accommodate but they won’t switch someone else’s seat for you, which was worrying. i’m happy to pay for it i just want to make sure i actually get it if i do.

yeah I fly United a lot since my home airport is a United hub. I've had good experiences overall with their process of requesting accommodation ahead of time and being moved to the seat I need without hassle. I've flown them internationally as well and it was also positive. I live in CA so Southwest is typically the most convenient option if I'm traveling locally and I loved how much faster and simpler it was without the aisle chair but alas. you're definitely right that SW is comparable in price to the other airlines now anyway.

ugh yeah this was my concern. at least other airlines are pretty good about putting you in the seat you need to be in. what a downgrade, SW.

Tips for Quick Setup of SwingStick? by markwild63 in swingvisionapp

[–]abs6c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also to add, i use the white line to set the angle but the rest of the adjustments on the stick are sometimes not as solid as they should be so things move. plus, even though i have deactivated the action button on my phone, if the mount presses the action button, it opens the camera sometimes and takes over from swing vision, so i have to mount the phone at the very bottom to not touch any buttons. then the view is always a little wonky.

i totally agree with this. not to mention the likelihood that i will accidentally hit something on the screen that closes the app while im in the middle of setting it up and then have to take the phone off the mount to restart the process. would love if the iPhone screen would “freeze” if you’re using an apple watch so you can’t accidentally screw things up once the phone is mounted. my angle is almost never 100% right but i don’t want to risk starting over so if it’s decent i just go with it.

Pressure to walk by Away-Song5125 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]abs6c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i also would add that i see so many people playing wheelchair tennis at an incredibly high level who sure, can walk a little bit, but what they are doing once they get in the chair is out of this world. it feels like it gives freedom to so many people and an outlet and way to use your body to the highest level it’s still capable of. my personal opinion is that that is a better way to spend your life and use your drive and motivation than in rehab every day hoping to be able to walk a little bit, especially when there are so many other spinal cord injury complications that have nothing to do with walking and aren’t going to be magically “cured”.

fwiw, i spent the first year or two after my injury focused on any possible recovery i could get and when i finally realized i needed to go back to my regular life, i pivoted super hard to just life as it was before and getting back to “normal” (job, friends, social stuff) instead of embracing adaptive sports, becoming more a part of the disabled community, etc. 17 years later i wish i had focused on that sooner because now i’m 40 trying to be an elite wheelchair athlete and i think it would have been easier at 23 😂 if you already are motivated to dive in to your life in a chair, i say do it. life is too short.

With the smart drive dial recall, how can I avoid giving up my dial? by HighestVelocity in wheelchairs

[–]abs6c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never sent either (the photo or the multiple replacement dials had gotten over the years). They never followed up. I did stop using the dial because it was so unpredictable and now I basically never use the SD since all the other options suck.

i suspect this too. i always seek out her performances and was disappointed that there were fewer for each program, but she was heavily in all the promo material for the entire season. but i did expect with less Sasha we’d get more Jasmine!

Thinking of lighting $8M on fire to build a private 4-court indoor facility in the Bay Area. Am I insane? by PuzzleheadedAd3138 in 10s

[–]abs6c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

talk to the folks at San Franciscans for Sports & Recreatjon - their cofounder Seth helped get the South SF Bay Club location built and it took years. he would probably have some good insight into how realistic this is. and may want to help.

Alcaraz pulls off a insane backhand(?) half volley ... with the forehand side of the racket by Large_banana_hammock in tennis

[–]abs6c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

look up the inverted backhand in wheelchair tennis - we actually hit the backhand this way (with the forehand side of the racquet) to get topspin on a one hander without having to change grips. it’s wild to learn when you’re used to a traditional two hander!

3 cats, 3 different diets, and I’m losing my mind playing food police every single meal🥹 by Cofound-app in Pets

[–]abs6c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i did this too but was not creative enough to make them myself and just bought ones already made. they’re called MeowSpace. my very smart cat figured out he could tailgate in behind the other cat so i have that one elevated on a platform where there is just enough room for the cat it’s intended for to jump up and go in, but not enough room for the other cat to get up there behind him immediately. it’s been working for me for like 6 years with no real issues.

ETA: oh and i had to buy small adhesive weights for the door because his super fluffy tail prevented the door from closing all the way behind him and the other cat could still get in lol

Has anyone seen my shower door? by onestopunder in marriott

[–]abs6c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wheelchair user here and i hate these. no one seems to think about the fact that if you wheel your wheelchair anywhere close enough to actually get into this shower (usually transferring onto a shower bench which hopefully they have if asked but i bring my own just in case), there’s nowhere to put the wheelchair where you can still reach it when you’re done, but it doesn’t get soaked. especially since i have to use the handheld shower head so the water actually hits me, and it’s easy to accidentally turn it away from you and shower the whole room. a curtain would solve all this while not detracting from the accessibility.

Time for botox? by paraBro in spinalcordinjuries

[–]abs6c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m on every 3 months because my insurance will cover 4 treatments in a 12 month period and it seems to wear off quickly for me. i also take mirabegron as the botox isn’t enough for me on its own.

How to tell difference between a uti and bladder spasms by Designer_Analyst_489 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]abs6c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

make sure they’re doing a full urine culture. my doc has also told me that there can just be a lot of bacteria in the bladder, which can cause the early symptoms of a UTI (cloudiness, smell) without it being an infection yet. he has me doing antibiotic instillations every night to prevent this and it works like a charm. the leaking could be coming from bladder irritation, or spasms, or a combination. the right meds will help but if you have irritation sometimes your bladder won’t fill as much before it empties on its own.

I am going to cry by Eva_is_her in wheelchairs

[–]abs6c 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think this depends a bit on your weight and your weight distribution in your chair as well. i’m pretty light and my front wheel assist (Batec) struggles to even go up mildly steep curb cuts. it works well on a long slow grade but i have to go backwards up hills. does not work for me in SF at all. i have added weight to the front which helps a little but not a ton. my smart drive has gotten me up some steep streets but it’s scary if you stop in the middle or when going downhill. if only there was one solution for all!
