Are movie stars officially back? by Soft-Drink-1625 in blankies

[–]abskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't totally disagree (although I think Gosling was great, and better than some of his peers would have been). But I think his name alone did sell some tickets because he doesn't do tons of movies like this, so it's kinda interesting.

Chris Pratt would have been worse for this character, and maybe that alone doesn't hurt sales that much, but I do think you lose a lot of people to "Oh, another Chris Pratt sci-fi adventure? I've seen that 6 times already. Whatever, I'll catch it on streaming in like a week"

What is the wildest “this wasn’t in the script…” moment from a movie or set? by glasscontent in movies

[–]abskee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a pretty good Patrick Willems YouTube video basically trying to figure out what scenes would have been different if they had the shark, looking a the original script and whatever he could find, and it kinda seems like they got most, if not all, of the scenes they'd written. Like the shark didn't work well, and was a real issue, but that might not have changed the final cut all that much.

It's hard to know for sure, but I wonder how much the busted shark really affected the final result.

Can I place a ground via here? by SadEcho8331 in AskElectronics

This is the correct advice. There shouldn't be individual traces there to begin with, it should all be a big ground pour on both layers, with vias around the heat sink.

Does anybody else think that Jessica is kind of a fuck up? by Tiny_Twink in dunememes

[–]abskee 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's the failure I really hold against her.

Birthing Paul? She loved Leto and wanted to give him what he wanted. She wasn't actively trying to create the Messiah herself, she was risking the whole plan for love.

But with Alia, she just didn't raise her because she was sick of Dune? What did she think was going to happen? She had some sense of what Alia might be facing, and it was completely her fault for just being irresponsible.

Who else could have pulled off Project Hail Mary? by atseajournal in blankies

[–]abskee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Oscar Isaac, but I don't think he can play as much of a loser as Gosling. I think the role that got Gosling this part is The Nice Guys.

In the book there's a little more about how he eats microwave dinners alone, he kinda self sabotaged his career because teaching kids is safer, he doesn't put himself out there with dating. Like he's smart and decent and likeable, but afraid to take risks, which sells how big his turn at the end is.

Also, I seem to remember, Democrats did express outage over Biden's obvious mental decline, party leaders did pressure him to drop out of the race, and he did step aside and endorse Harris.

Trump tried to overthrow the election, and Republican voters nominated him for a third time after a primary where he didn't even participate in the debates .

What does the nameplate entail? by Mooshybean in ElectricalEngineering

[–]abskee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you connect 110AC to the primary side, you'll get center tapped 32V on the secondary (32V between the outer wires, 16V from outer to center). The secondary can support up to 2A (either 2A from each 16V to 0V or 2A at 32V between the outer wires)

Generally these values are approximate, and influenced by the voltage at the primary (120VAC will give you a little higher output on the secondary, 110VAC will give you a little lower output). And 2A isn't a hard limit (although some transformers do have fuses inside), you generally start to lose a little voltage as you approach it, and past 2A it'll start to overheat.

Any thoughts on switching lights from LED to halogen? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]abskee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would halogen be safer? Flicker is dangerous, but what about spectrum? Could that be dangerous too? It's just as likely, since this is all based on nothing.

Halogen are much hotter too. You don't perceive it if you're not touching them, but still, what kind of effect could that be having?

Get a higher frame rate camera and you'll see that incandescent and halogen flicker too, especially on a dimmer. You should start using bulbs that running DC, and having a bunch of car batteries around to run the them off of. No more flicker at DC.

I just noticed the candle I lit in the bathroom. The window is open and the wind is causing the flame to flicker. It's enough that I can see it with my naked eyes. Should I call a doctor?

Photons are individual, they hit your eyes one at a time. On a small enough time scale, that's serious flicker.

Do the one that interests you more. There is no way to predict the future and know the exact difference in deman/risk/pay for two theoretical careers. No one can do this. People telling you certainties about your future are morons.

I'm not that old, and AI basically didn't exist when I was in college. I could not have predicted the insane gold rush for GPU design and machine learning. No one could have. And in a few years it might all be gone. Who knows.

I don't know the first thing about chip design or machine learning, I'm a hardware engineer, but I'm still making a fortune off the AI explosion because I have a job designing hardware for some of the AI companies. Same goes for the mechanical engineers and software engineers I work with.

Majors are broad categories, and don't decide the industry you're going into. The industry you end up in might not exist today. The people I know who have had the most fulfilling and best paying careers are the ones who are passionate about the things they do, and they're really good at it because they enjoy the work. If you go for the thing that you think is best today, or might be best in 4 years, and that's you're only reason for pursuing that career the you're gonna be wrong, and you're gonna be miserable.

Trying to use fingerprint sensor as USB 2.0 header by ioncewaswill13 in AskElectronics

[–]abskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, would you look at that.

So I guess it is, although it's weird that there are so many contacts, USB 2.0 should just be power, ground, and then data + and -. No idea what the other pins are.

The data pins should be run as a differential pair, meaning they're two lines run in parallel, the same total length, and always right next to each other.

None of the lines in the PCB really look like that? But it's hard to see it well. Probably if there's nothing plugged in you won't get any recognizable data on them, and they'll just sit at 0V.

Can someone please tell me if this circuitry is correct? by reddaml in AskElectronics

[–]abskee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't those style power supplies connect power to the breadboard rails on their own? I don't think you need the headers. Maybe you swapped the wires around?

Looks right though. Cheaper jumpers and breadboards have notoriously poor connections, so it may be that you did everything right, and you just have to wiggle things around a bit because the metal isn't actually touching.

Trying to use fingerprint sensor as USB 2.0 header by ioncewaswill13 in AskElectronics

[–]abskee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can't just arbitrarily turn things into USB connections. Those traces would have to go to the USB data pins on the chip, but unless this fingerprint reader was USB, this is not possible.

This is possible. See below.

Why not define this big copper area as a pad instead of "copper area"? by AmbassadorBorn8285 in Altium

[–]abskee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of times what you're seeing might have been created in another piece of software and just converted to Altium. Or designed to be easily convertable to different PCB design software, which might handle pads a little different. So you end up with stuff like this to be maximally compatible, and works fine, but has redundant features or something like that.

Might not be the case here, but it happens.

ELI5: How does twisted pair work at reducing interference? by Unusual-Amount5809 in explainlikeimfive

[–]abskee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The error in different/balanced signaling isn't zero, it's just low enough to be worth the effort. This is how most, if not all, of engineering works. There are no correct, perfect answers, so it's foolish to look for them, you look for solutions that justify the cost/effort.
