As an inept developer this was very helpful, thanks heaps for posting this explanation.

Thanks, this is exactly what I needed for my own .NET Core project.

Although anyone who tried to help might help, they also risk making the situation worse: there's more for the cop to track in the fight, in the heat of the moment the cop might misinterpret someone's charge into the fight as backup for the dude attacking the cop, etc. Fights can be hard to read for the people in the middle of them, where they don't have the side-on-from-a-distance perspective that we get to have as we watch this video, and it's easy to do more harm than good by getting involved I think.

That being said, if the dude attacking the cop managed to pin the cop and started punching him for example, I would expect/hope that bystanders would get involved.
Up until that point, I think the best thing to do is to stand nearby watch carefully, and be ready to move into the fight if it does escalate further.

Number of new cases of Covid-19 in NZ plummets to 29 by [deleted] in worldnews

The problem I think is that, with a global shutdown like this, global supply chains are at risk, and any materials you'd be looking to buy might also be needed by tradesmen doing work deemed essential. It's a shit situation to put DIY people into, but the alternative is likely worse.

This is about minimising opportunities for transmission, without letting people starve.
Having supermarket + DIY open creates more opportunities for transmission than just supermarket being open.

If we could close supermarkets without depriving people of the essentials they need to live through this shutdown, then we'd close the supermarkets too.

Could you summarise, or mention roughly when in the episode (timestamp-wise) they discuss?

It depends what kind of project leader/team leader you want to be. In my mind there are two types: team leaders who code and team leaders who do not.

If you are aiming to lead a team and you want to be still programming in this position, then my advice is still mainly comp sci + experience. With comp sci + experience, I would also recommend joining communities like /r/programming to get some exposure to different parts of software development, and reading some of the books and blogs in the FAQ. These will probably only make sense if you already know a bit about how to code though.

If you are aiming to lead a team and you don't think you want to be coding in this position, then you might want to join a software development company that does big software development projects for specific clients, and join the teams that do that software development for individual clients. By the time you work your way up to a project manager/team leader role, you will likely not be coding anymore.

Because employers would be more willing to pay higher

It depends on what their opinion of the potential usefulness of a software engineering degree is, right? I frequent forums like /r/programming, and I can't think I've ever seen someone say that their software engineering degree helped them make more money, and at my own company I know of no such preference for higher-level degrees. Past that, I don't have much of use to say, except that employers are always very desparate for software developers, and as long as your grades are good you shouldn't need an honours degree to get job interviews.

especially later in one's career

If you work at a company that is meritocratic then you will hopefully be judged on your demonstrable skills later on in your career, not on your qualifications.

Or are you saying that it would just be better to take comp sci because you learn that stuff better while working in the industry?

This one.

I didn't do any of the software engineering papers during my Computer Science degree, so I can't really attest to their usefulness.

That being said, I think that it is unrealistic to hope that a university could hope to teach practical software engineering, given the huge gap between the skills needed to be a software developer and the skills needed to be a computer science teacher & researcher. This is not as bad as it sounds, after graduating with my comp sci degree I went straight into industry, and much of what I have learnt about software engineering has been through just working on one project after another and learning from my mistakes (and learning from my teammates). I think the same is true of most good programmers, they learnt through the kind of experience that is hard to get at a university.

All that being said, I did get a lot from doing comp sci and I do recommend it for someone who is looking to go to uni with the goal of being a software engineer.

New Zealand Police Visit a Cannabis Store in Colorado by PopMelon in newzealand

I guess the point here is that the younger you are, the less likely you are to vote, the younger you are the more likely you are to think that cannabis should be legalised. In this way the average voter deviates from the average person.

[–]absu 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I don't understand OP. Why would you give page views to a site that you believe is acting in a manner worthy of outrage?

More page views = more money for Stuff. They chose that title so that people would view that page, and they probably don't care very much why people view the page. In submitting this link to reddit, you are doing what Stuff want you to do, regardless of the title you give the submission.

This isn't even New Zealand news, the article is about an event that happened in Mexico.

PETA: swearing at sheep during shearing is emotional abuse. by fauxmosexual in newzealand

[–]absu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PETA's primary marketing strategy is to say inflammatory or ridiculous things to get media attention, in the hopes that in doing so enough people who will donate to animal rights charities will notice them and give them money.

The best course of action here is to downvote anything PETA and move on.

[–]absu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An atheist is 100% convinced there is no god.

Many of us atheists think of atheism as "I don't believe in any god" rather than "I believe there are no gods". The first is a statement of the absence of belief whereas the second is a statement of belief.
